Explosion in Oslo

Your not saying that this guy can be rehabilitated right?

We won't know until we try. If it doesn't work, his danger to others is reassessed every five years beginning at the end of his 21-year mandatory sentence. If he's deemed to be a threat, back he goes for another half-decade.

"Our answer is more democracy, more openness and more humanity. But never naivety."

No.

Also, I do find it kind of funny that the people that seem to be the most hating aren't Norwegians, they're people in other countries.

As the survivor, Helene Bøtei, whose mother was the first killed said during her speech in Norway.

"Instead of hating the terrorist, show compassion and love to the people who are close to you."

Another Norwegian survivor said this:

"If one man can show so much hate, think how much love we all can show together"

These comments reflect the cultural values that the Norwegians aspire too, as does Sweden and also as such reflects the principles behind our prisons.

I.e. that our prison system isn't about revenge, it may be about punishment and preventing the person from hurting others, but it isn't about revenge.

It isn't about causing more suffering. That is also one of the reason why we do not have death sentences anymore and our general populations do not support them.

Yes, but you can't know until you try to rehabilitate them.

Hell, I'd want to be rehabilitated for an en-suite room and access to a recording studio.

"LONDON (AP) — A British right-wing blogger linked to the Norway gunman has confirmed the existence of an anti-Muslim group inspired by ancient crusaders that the killer claims he was a member of.

But in an interview with The Associated Press, the Briton denied Anders Behring Breivik belonged to his Knights Templar group and said he'd never heard of the Norwegian before the attacks."

Mmm, I think we have reached the level where the state doesn't have to treat their citizens, even convicted ones, like cattle. And if it's any comfort, studies have shown that prisoners in Sweden, and I imagine in Norway too, tend to be very depressed due to the isolation from other people and inability to control their lives. So they are being punished alright, just not with cocks up their arses in the prison showers.

Yes, but you can't know until you try to rehabilitate them.

If we fail, then can we off with their heads?

Also, I understand that rehabilitation of individuals so that they don't commit crimes again is an extremely important part of the prison system. However, when a prison looks like a hotel, maybe it isn't so efficient. There should be a direct way to rehab people and make them into functional members of society.

I suggest chemicals.

The only acceptable failure in rehabilitation is the natural expiration of a human life. The point is to attempt to get the person to recapture or reconnect with their social humanity. You never know if the key to their self-realisation is one more day of imprisonment, one more book being read, one more moment of introspection.

I've never thought of that. That sounds truly human.

what hippie thing to say.

I would say that 9/10 or more of the inmates cluttering up prisons, "broken" people, criminals, drug users, misfits, are a product of their environment rather than inherently bad people. The purpose of prison should not be punishment, but to provide a mandatory change of their environment for their own betterment. Basically if someone has shown that they consistently cannot make good choices in their life, start making some of those choices for them, put them on track to not be a burden on society. Give them a rigid structured life, but not a cruel life. I bet half of the people here think that they could benefit from a more positively structured life. It's hard to make yourself exercise and eat right just by willpower, but imagine working on a farm with a routine and an environment where those kind of choices are made for you. It's not the American ideal of freedom, but neither is the current prison system.

PETA should hire that guy as their primary spokesperson...

****ing moron.

Morrisey has always been a penis, this isn't breaking news.

I've never even heard of him or The Smiths before.

Yes, I am that ignorant when it comes to 20th century musicians.

Good to see he's still a petulant self-absorbed pretentious ****.

Nothing compared to what happens in McDonalds and KFC every day?

THEY SERVE ****ING FOOD YOU ****ING COCKSUCKER. THEY ARE NOT THE SLAUGHTERHOUSES THAT PROVIDE THEM WITH THE MEAT.

And even if the chickens were killed there live on the premises...

What a ******(video justification of my terminology)

EDIT: Well doesn't matter anyway, it's a censored word, which is stupid.

Well, as I see it (correct me if I'm wrong), in his eyes all life is equal and he's equally upset with the death of an animal as with that of a human which I think is good. The comment was very insensitive to those affected and to other people though.

On a side note: Apparently he was playing this song on repeat and very loud on his iPod while commiting the massacre to gain courage and lose fear.

Well, he didn't even say it was "as bad as" the animal slaughter, he chose the words "nothing compared to."

No matter which way you look at it or how you see Morrissey, it was a pretty dumbshit thing to say in front of a festival-sized crowd, really.

Also, holy crap. Way to put a creepy pall over one of my favourite pieces of music. :/

Snip: video

Clint Mansell was originally from Stourbridge, West Midlands, UK (where I live). Our local newspaper had a big article on how the Norwegian massacre was linked directly to Stourbridge because of this piece of music. Just thought I should let you guys know that I'm in liaison with the murderer.

PS: Clint Mansell = Requiem for a Dream

TERRORIST!

The first burial was held yesterday.

18-year-old Bano Abobakar Rashid was shot to death after having run from tent to tent alerting people to the danger, she was a highly liked youth-leader for the AUF and was thought to have a very prosperous career as a politician ahead of her.

After a Christian ceremony in the church, a Muslim ceremony took place at the graveyard, Bano's family is of Kurdish origin and fleed from Iraq to Norway in 1996.

The ceremony was packed with friends, family and those who simply wanted to show their support to the victims.
