F.E.A.R. single-player demo to be released this Friday

Aye, don't expect huge gains in performance.... There will be some optimizations, but not a whole lot, especially when you are soooo close to release (for example in Halo2, there was a rock in one of the early SP levels they wanted to remove, but because it was so close to release they left the rock there, for fear of more bugs... It's near where the two brute's break down the door in that one old City....)

Except Bunjie (or whatever) aren't good devs... Monolith are.

The final release of FEAR will have alot of its bugged sqaushed out..why do you think they released a demo? because people "want" this game...or because they want to see how it runs on a wide range of PC's and get feedback?

actually no, you're confusing a demo with a beta or beta-demo. they release demos to give gamers a taste of the game that will hopefully be enough for them to buy it. even if they do happen to get information about bugs from demo feedback, its not certain that they will actually fix the bugs, or release a nice big patch a while after the retail game hits. this is modern day pc gaming, don't expect miracles.

its close to 2 months before they release it tough, i'd say they have time to adjust a few bugs here and there.

Anyone else see the tremendous amount of influence Half-Life has had on this game?

No?
Besides the Slightly interactive cutscene at the beginning.

I mean the soldiers and the way they communicate through the radio, the helicopter that deploys them in that one fight, that cutscene at the start and the fact that all of the soldiers are faceless?

Not to mention that the developers themselves have actually said the game is supposed to be a hybrid of Half-life and The Ring.

Its not a bad thing, its a great thing, every game should be as good as Half-Life. I was just asking if anyone else noticed this.

Eh, I thought they said it was a hybrid of The Matrix and The Ring?
But it's not like it's bad.
Sorry, I'm a bit arguementative in the morning :p

Soldiers communicating through radios? OMG you're right! No one had ever thought of that before Half Life 2!

Helicopters deploying soldiers? I've never played a game that did that, I especially didn't notice it in Far Cry!

I'm not having a dig at you in particular Sparta, but rather to all the people who think Half Life is the fountain of all originality in the gaming industry.

Peace.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about Half-Life 1.
In which everything it did, was fairly original.
It was made in 1997, which imo was when PC Gaming was at its peak.
Everything original came out of that year.

Actually i think they did say Half-Life meets The Ring

But that might've just been Gamespot's interpretation. Edit: Yeah it's just Gamespot's interpretation.

Actually, everything you mentioned, and i mentioned, was back in Half-Life in 1998. And i never said that Half-Life was the fountain of originality in the gaming industry or implied it. I'm saying it influenced it, and from all the evidence i've seen it definately has.

After the hugely dissapointing MP Beta, this is a much better experience. The combat is fun, and made highly memorable by the lovely particle and blood/gibbing effects, and there are some genuinely atmospheric and scary setpieces which everyone has already mentioned a hundred times, so I won't go over them again. Still, I think I'll wait for final reviews and community thoughts before I go rushing out to buy it on release.

Thats just stereotypical Soldier-type behaviour...you couldn't expect Soldiers to not have a gas mask on, use paper cups and a piece of string for communication and have wings in their backs to fly around... :p

Finally got to play it....DAMN is it cool!

Can't wait for the full game.

EDIT: Now that I'm at work with plenty of time on my hands I'll go further in-depth.

It ran just fine on my system with one hiccup through the entire way. I have it at 1024x768 with like 2xaa and no AF (I never really cared about putting it on) with everything else at max.

I had goosebumps almost the entire demo. The end was kinda spoiled for me (with Alma standing there when you go down the ladder and the big bad guy at the end) but it still was spooky as shit. I like the small touches like the breathing, hud flickers, etc.

I really like the weapons too. Unfortunately the part where the Hind comes in and drops 2 soldiers was too easy in my run through it because I luckily hit both of them in the head as they were about to hop on their ropes with the nailgun.

I actually died early on (the part where you face 4 bad guys, one has a shotgun). One guy knocked over that shelf with all the stuff on it and took cover behind it. After killing all but one of them I went towards the shelf for a closer look. Popped on my flashlight and the guy dove under the shelf and unloaded on me as he did. I died by the time I noticed what he did and turned my gun on him. Now THAT's cool AI to me.

My 2nd pass through that area was different. I decided to creep in the room and be a little more stealthy. I had my pistol out and popped the first guy in the head from behind some cover. The other guys said, "Sniper!" and started creeping around to try and find me while staying low. I like the AI a lot already.

EDIT2: I never used melee. I'm gonna go through the demo again on the hardest difficulty and play around with it and just try different things to see how the AI reacts.

so, half life 1 invented soldiers being deployed by helicopters ? hell, what were they doing back in nam and other wars ?

yes, it's a half life fan forum, but come on. . .

Oh for **** sake all i said was that i spotted alot of influences from it in this game and suddenly everyone jumps at me.

****, Gamespot recognised its similarities before me so just stop it already.

Amish, are you sure that helicopter is a Hind?

It looked way larger than and had a different shape..

The front of it looks like a hind. I know its similar to the one the Chinese have in BF2. That transport helicopter.

Yeah I just checked it out, I'm not sure tho, is it the same helicopter in the intro as the one that drops the soldiers out on the yard?

think so. I think its also in Operation Flashpoint too.

Yeah, it is, "ofcourse" hehe, afterall it's one of the main transport helicopters of the Russian(in OFPs case, Soviet) army.

When i booted it up last night, I thought I was onto something special. Then the actual game started and was given fleeting, terrible glances of boxy, plasticy Deus Ex 2 style level design, the current, unexplainable fad for "i've shat me pants" movement speeds and weapons that lacked any finesse and sent me to sleep. The opening sequence was great - good voice acting and animation... but big production values does not a good game make.

Why do my particles appear like this?

It never did the very first time I tried the demo.

This game isn't scary... its... well.... I'm paranoid now.
I've only played a bit past the part you get the grenades.
Though... now, I walk around the house slowly with my heartbeating.
Last night I couldn't sleep, because I heard the weight shifting on the carpet outside my door (Extremely hard to explain), and the floor creaks a lot when you walk on it, there was no creaking. I also felt something moving outside.
*shutters*
Now I'm paranoid.
EDIT: I got the license data error after I restarted the game to change performances (Bullet holes were.... well.... they looked like huge holes, not bullet holes.)

EDITEDEDIT: Whoa... I found a fix to the Invalid License Data error.
Set your compability on the FEAR Exe to Windows 95, and/or set resolution to 640 x 480 (Both in properities compability).
You can change the resolution in game too, so don't worry about the resolution setting.

Great game, plays with your mind.
