F.E.A.R. single-player demo to be released this Friday

mines broken :(

After the first "level" (which is just a story presentation), the face of some guy says "you will be a god among men", then it opens the loading screen for a new level. However, nothing happens. The taskbar doesn't begin to fill.

I can alt-tab out, and task manager says its "running", but it doesnt seem to actually ever load anything :( :(

The bit with the girl would have been more frightening if she ran at you and did that crazy cyber scream.

That happens in a later level. There was a video that showed a hallway black out and she pops out screaming running at you then goes away. The video spoiled it, otherwise I would've freaked out. :|

Edit: http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=426

Go down to E3 2K4 Demo and you'll see it about half way into the video.

Edit2: I found out who the little girl is. The Truth

I like shooting people in the face with the metal stake gun.

I like just going through the level using melee combat only

Is there going to be more demos for Fear as its still two months away. Do you think they will realase a new mutilplayer demo?

The game's not meant to be really scary I don't think...
It's just supposed to psyche you out like crazy.

And imo, It ****ing did. x.X

I think it'll have great replay value, aside from knowing where all the scary stuff happens.. you can put some random combo's of shooting and kicking , slow mo, and AI that either goes one direction or the other depending.. the ragdoll's are kick ass.. Its different everytime you do it... hence loads of replay value.

Damn I got a R9600~pro (overclocked). Does it look like shit in these settings? I played HL2 in 1024, all high, no AA/AF fine. Same with Doom3.

how is 9600pro compared to 9500pro? 8 pixel pipelines vs 4 on the 9600 or something?

I have a 9500pro running the game at 1024*768 with alot of the settings on maximum, though some are turned off like soft shadows etc. its quite fluid except the outdoor(helicopter area). xp2400 and 512mb ram.

Lol, in the beginning when youre in the car with that guy, activate slowmo when he's talking. Funny stuff.

Gameplay was fun :)

engine needs some optimising though

9500Pro i significantly faster than 9600Pro, only 9600XT can reach 9500pro's performance in lower (not higher than 1024x768) resolutions.

To those saying that the firefight where the dude knocks down the shelf is scripted - you're actually dirty liars.
Ive played through about 5 times, each time on the "extreme" or whatever (it honestly isnt that hard, i cant imagine playing it on an even EASIER mode) and each time the battle turned out different for me.
Sometimes the guy would knock the shelf down and hide behind it and shoot. If i retreated at this point he climbs under to chase you. Once i charged him and he started to flank me through the corridor, so i turned to run into the corridor as well. What did he do? turns around back where he came from and shoots me in the back!

If you either charge immediatly or retreat immediately he doesnt knock the shelf over at all.
I guess what I'm saying is that i want to have children with whoever programmed the AI.

PS If you go back up the steps in the part where the helicopter comes you can shoot the dudes in it before they even jump out and watch them faaaaallllllllllllll :D

Nice demo. The firefights are quite realistic. I mean usually in games you don't die so quickly as here. I thought, ah what the hell, I'll rush them. BAM! I'm dead in 2 seconds.

If you jump, crouch, then right click you'll do a slide kick thing

You don't need to jump... also, if you jump, then go backwards mid-air and right click, you do a roundhouse kick.

If you just stand still, jump and melee he'll do the roundhouse. Very neat :)

Meele combos:

Standing still, right-click: gunwhip
Jump, right-click: roundhouse kick
Forward, right-click, crouch: slide kick
Forward, jump, right-click: series of mid-air kicks

You can 'juggle' eneimes Golden Eye stylee. Try charging the bad guys, slow down time and shoot each once in their arms/legs/feet/hands etc - you've know got plenty of time to unleash a barrage of melee/gun combos and take em out in so many cool ways.

Rushing 4 bad guys and killing them all without taking a hit is very satisfying \o/

On a downside - I don't think FEAR looks or perfroms as well as other, more recent, titles. Imagine this gameplay in source :)

The engine looks like the one used in Chronicles of Riddick.

I twatted one in the head just as I saw him through the windows on the other side, he did a flip over the railing and was pinned to the wall

the best weapon is the grenade #4 it vaporise meat tissue and leaves out the skeleton

murray_H your graphics is very shit ;(

Well they are the best I can do :p

Shadows off, lighting minimum, no volumetric lights, 2xAA, trilinear filtering, medium texures, 1024x768. It makes it playable. Plus it's a jpg at 60% quality :p

However, I can play with everything full (bar max textures) if I click the pixel doubling on :p Looks so pixelated, but full effects.....woot?

Don't worry about, gfx settings aren't going to effect how much you'll enjoy the game. As long as the framerate is nice and high, and the gameplay is solid, that's all you'll need :)

Well it appears the higher you have the settings, the more gore you have. I just took one guys head off with the shotgun (as he jumped over a railing, which looked sick yet cool), I totally gibbed someone with a shotgun blast and also blew someone in half, all done with settings really high :/

Sure, but those aren't that settings that will really kill your frames (like high res textures and shadows etc)

Just play with the settings, i'm sure you'll find a decent balance.

(even on the highest possible settings this demo stll looks rather bland compared to Doom 3 and HL2. Framerate always > details imo. Hopefully the full game will be better optimised)

No gibbing you say? I've got medium detail (except for the lightning and shadows) and look what happened :p

That was a rather disappointing demo. The environments and characters are extremely bland. The game play consists of moving from one boxed room to another while shooting the same enemy over and over again, and for a game called FEAR it wasn't scary in any way. The whole thing was laughable.

Thou dost needeth better taste in games!:hmph:

Seriously - if you were not impressed or did not have fun with this demo, then I think you need to re-evaluate your gaming standards or take a break from gaming because I would say you've become jaded and/or burnt out.

He can have an opinion y'know.

The game was fun and creepy to me.
I could care less about the graphics, but they were nice.

But, The optimization in the game needs some looking into.

Agreed

I agree with qckbeam in that it wasn't scary, but I thought the characters were done pretty well, they at least had some good voice actors attached to them.

I agree with him.

And as for being Jaded with gaming, I was blown away with BF2 not only a month ago, and HL2 almost made me fall out of my seat.

Personally, I blame it on my low graphics that are preventing me from enjoying the game. I still think it's stupid for game makers to make games that run like crap on slightly above-average computers. They should focus on art direction more and dynamic shminamic less.

Not everyone is like you you know, people do have different opinions. And I wholeheartedly agree with him - poor demo.

This game is too much for my 9600xt... I think I'm getting about 20-30 fps and that's with all settings on low/medium and 800x600 resolution. :|

Wierd, because mine runs it smoothly on medium.

And my opinion falls somewhere in between :)

Better than a poke in the eye, but hardly GOTY material.
