F.E.A.R. single-player demo to be released this Friday

I found the demo quite fun. I decided to turn the detail up and play it slower because it looked like ass with it all set to low.

The lighting really adds to the atmosphere. Without it, I think the game wouldn't be as good. Walking done the under passage in the dark and hearing little giggles was enough to make me jump. :x

The weapons where pretty cool. The nail gun thing is great. Impaled a soldiers head and he kept firing his gun. I liked the enemy AI also.

I should just stop reading this thread until I get my comp working :( It's taunting me. I've been looking forward for a taste of FEAR's sp for so long.

I really love the demo... hated it at first, but then adjusted to the gameplay (I've been playing nothing but BF2 lately- quite a change). The lighting is great, the gameplay is very solid, the weapons are cool, and the particle effects are gorgeous. And for people with decent PCs, I recommend turning "soft shadowing" on. It's a performance hit, but makes the game look 50 times better.

Does anyone else's game stutter right before the "scary" stuff happens? It wasn't suprising at all to me becacuse of the nice 1 second pause that occured right before them. Am I pushing it? I'm running it at 1280x1024 with 4xAA and 16xAF with everything imaginable on the highest setting, except soft shadowing. (I didn't like the way it looked, I think Chronicles of Riddick did soft shadows 10000 times better than this game). But whats the deal, I thought my computer would rip through this game like nothing..:(

When I first messed with my settings it ran great, but today I changed some things and now it's doing the same thing for me. Just mess around and you can fix it

I was scared shit right in the beginning. I wasn't expecting to see anything involving the girl at all in the first few moments, god damn. I played a little after that but got tired of the suspense, so I stopped and played CS:S. I'll give it another whirl tomorrow. Now way in ****ing hell am I playing it now at 11:00 in a dark room.

Oh come on, that's the best time to play it :p Gotta play these things at midnight, with 0 light in the room! There's no reason to be scared ;)

ah just do what I do ...have a machete within reach just in case anyone tries to sneak up on you (my wife will never try that again ....)

First game I've played where I was afraid to turn around, anytime I found a locked door I was like "She's right behind me..." and MOST of the time, I was wrong, the part with the ladder made me jump.

Instead on going down the ladder just jump down. You'll loose some heath so just make sure you have enough. Climb back up and you'll see her again but be able to stand infront.

When I did that I went back down and there was a man (probably that strange guy from the beginning) and then he vanished. I never noticed him before.

Yeah, some guy was running at me and I started unloading and thought he ran behind me, this game really does kick ass when it comes to the scare factor.

yeah, that's supposed to happen. I actually like the combat more than the scary parts. The slo-mo effects, the blood spray (and other crazy particle effects), the gibbing and the AI all make it truly awesome.

I just want to know why this game doesn't run nearly as well as HL2, an equally beautiful game. Sure, after setting Volumetric Lights to medium did help a bunch, but I just don't understand what's eating up all of my system with this game. I mean, the lighting is nice, but it's nothing amazing, that it should be bringing my system to its knees. Giving this another shot later today.

Agreed - I'm loving the gameplay in FEAR (nice AI :)), but it doesn't run that well. Other games that look just as good perform better with lesser hardware.

I, on the other hand, have turned into a complete fanboy. :x

Me to :D the game kicks ass and its really scary (for me at least...i scare easily and little girls are even worse). Bullettime has been implemented so nice...the last FPS that gave me this much fun was FC, except the AI is leaps and bounds better :) Can't wait for release. I love the partical effects more than anything..they make it seem as if you're actually being shot at, like, one time i was just around a corner during a fight and they shot right at the corner of the wall and it was just like in the movies :D

the devs did a good job in the presentation of the demo, it was short and sweet but it was totally intriguing, when you get to the end and the cutscene with alma in the hallway, the slowmo, the heavy breathing, the blurriness, then the door opens to the room and you see felix slowly walking up to the security guard...then you go into the next room and boom, huge badass boss, then the screen goes slowmo again and fades to black, just the noise of you firing your gun....awesome, other devs could learn from this demo style, totally made me psyched for the full version...

I didn't like the fear demo at all. I didn't find the "scary" part of the demo scary or unsettling at all and I didn't find that the combat was anything to write home about either. Bullet time is old news, I'm tired of corridor crawls, the weapons didn't really feel right. Ho-hum in all regards in my opinion. Just another run of the mill FPS. I "fear" I'll be steering well clear of this mediocre title.

Of course you didn't find the scary part of the demo scary.
Seeing as you probably knew about it already.
Therefore you anticipated it.

the game's supposed to be more about atmosphere than straight up scares, it's supposed to creep you out, not make you jump, which is hard to pull off, but it seems like the game might do it from the demo

The game presents a better atmostphere than Doom3 does in all honesty. You either have to be very slow, or very boring and unimaginative if the atmosphere in FEAR doesn't make you a little bit creepy...

I was creeped out, made me jump a bit to because i skipped the ladder part by jumping over because it was dark :p but then my bro did that part and went down the ladder and it made me jump when that little girl was stood in your face. :(

The rifle and smg are rather crappy and very 'spammy' (Golden Eye clob, anyone?). Also, the pistol has to be the worst looking model in video game history.

However, bullet time combined with melee in a FPS is pretty damn cool :), and the ai seems very good so far. I'm certainly enjoying the comabt more than Doom3/HL2 etc

Visually, bar the neat slow mo effects, i'm not that impressed though. It doesn't look bad, just rather drab and boring.

the rifle and smg only burst fire... it pisses me off to no avail.. push trigger once and you get a damn spray.. ugly. But great demo!

The rifle does have a pretty crappy sound, and some of the weapons look very bad imo.
But I like how devastating the SMG is. Just keeping the trigger pulled is so damn cool, especially in slow-mo. :)

i just hope my 'puter can run it...
It will, don't worry. My ol' buddy(1.7 GHz Celeron 512 SDRAM Ati 9550 128MB 128-bit) ran it nearly perfectly on Low settings, and with a meager fps loss on Medium setting.

wow.. nice.
my system is slightly better so this is encouraging.

its a good thing 'nearly perfectly' isn't subjective and that we all know what it means! :dork:

It means no lower than 20-30 FPS. And I'm satisfied with that. :upstare: I get around 20, sometimes lower with most of settings on Medium. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't demos usually more laggy than final release?

people like to think that the full version of a game runs faster than the demo, but its rarely true. still, theres a placebo there that can be quite real, so believe it and it will be true.

does FEAR have an official release date?
im a bit lazy reading through this 32 page essay :p

Half-Life 2 final release runs faster than the demo for me. Then again, it's the only demo I've tried (and now F.E.A.R.)

Well, that is awkward, as it was released after the final product.

So has anyone figured out how to access the console yet?

If you want to view your FPS (assuming that is why you want the console), just download FRAPS and let it run in the background...

I doubt that demo's are more laggy then the full version

Seriously, game demo's are released 1-2 months before the actual game (or 1-2 months after), don't expect it to run any better.

Aye, don't expect huge gains in performance.... There will be some optimizations, but not a whole lot, especially when you are soooo close to release (for example in Halo2, there was a rock in one of the early SP levels they wanted to remove, but because it was so close to release they left the rock there, for fear of more bugs... It's near where the two brute's break down the door in that one old City....)

In Half-Life 2 demo, my computer used to crash if there too many particles or enemies at the moment. In the final release it was pretty lag nontheless, but no crashes at least. Don't know, maybe because my PC sucked back then.

SWAT 4 Demo (I tried it also, before the upgrade) also had its performance issues, but in final release 5-10 FPS were added.

Why are you people so negative? Good for you when most of you are sitting there with NASA computers! As for me, I'll pray each night for them to maximize performance. :upstare:
