Bethesda's Fallout website has been updated, noting that in 34 days they'll be releasing a teaser trailer for the game. Currently the site offers a new piece of concept art, as well as a streaming version of the Fallout 3 title track. New concept art will be posted weekly until the release of the teaser.

omg, oblivion with guns!!!

This could be awesome if Beth did a few things.

1. Populated, yes it's a barren nuked world I still want to encounter something rather than walking around for an hour to find a dead rat.

2. Indoor - Outdoor switching, please no loading screens I hate that.

3. This is not elder scrolls don't make it like elder scrolls.

Downloading the tech demo. It was from around 2003 so will probably look like crap.

Enormous win for keeping it the same top-down and assumedly S.P.E.C.I.A.L. style and gameplay.

Damn, I took some screens before you posted those links:

I hope they don't go with the isometric style, although you can rotate the camera freely in that alpha, but not to the horizon. I hope Bethesda try something different with the camera.

Yeah, thats for the old fallout 3 (codenamed Van Buren) which was cancelled to make way for Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel (which, by all accounts, was rubbish) not the new Fallout 3 based on the oblivion engine.

I'm hoping against what I know will happen that they keep it very similar (in style) to the original Fallout games rather than go with the much feared possiblity of a rather dumbed down "RPG" set in Fallout.

I don't think i would want to see it become "oblivion with guns". We'll see soon enough.

BTW, by "next month" - any chance they'll reveal it in the new E3?

Goddamn it 33 days to the trailer...unbelievable.

In all seriousness I'd of been happy with it being the 3D Isometric in the old trailer tbh. Somehow I think the Oblivion engine is just changing the game style too much.

Wow after all this time, it finally looks like it's coming together.

How could a Fallout FPS not be awesome?

It'd even be rid of the turn-based shittiness! :D

If the new Fallout game is based on the Oblivion engine I am gonna hang myself, seriously, the Oblivion engine is god awful, performancewise..

I think it has something to do with them using Gamebryo engine, which in all honesty is pretty shabby, and apparently all sources point to them using this engine for Fallout 3 as well, it'd be far nicer if they went and did either their own or say got a UE3 license..

I mean comeon, for gods sake, it's the same engine that's used in DAOC although a far more recent version ofcourse, it's also used in Sid Meiers Railroad! and shit.:\

Given the price of engine licences coupled with your team getting familiar with them, plus the tweaking etc, it's highly probable they will go with the Gamebyro tbh.

As for EU3 engine, way too demanding spec wise for most regular gamers, and in terms of delivery I'm not seeing the advantage there.

Thou art heathen! Infidels shall be thrown to Deathclaws covered in blood, brahmin guts and roped up.

If I had the power to remotely lobotomize people regardless of distance, you'd already be calling your monitor "poo-poo".

A third-person (GRAW style) Fallout game would be awesome

Turn based sucks outside of strategy games.

/me ducks to avoid flying chair.

It would have to be the Oblivion engine, anything else would be like going back to steam power.
The potential for atmosphere and immersion is immense, think about it; all-spoken dialogue, facial animation, a proper post-nuclear wasteland as far as the eye can see, untold number of eerily-lit bunkers inhabited by mutant hordes.
Hell yes! Count me in !

Fallout had crap combat. It had all the depth and complexity of diablo, but took as long as commanding an entire squad in something like silent storm. Tedious as hell. The reason I only played all the way through once on the second one. Still a great game though. I don't really care what kind of combat fallout 3 has, but if it is turn based I would like to see a tactical element to warrant it.

Bullshit. OMGWTFSHINY Oblivion compared to the gritty Half-Life 2 indicates that Source would be a better choice for the game.

The potential for atmosphere and immersion is immense

Let's take that apart.

all-spoken dialogue,

Bullshit. All-spoken dialogue was done in a crappy way in Oblivion (repeating voices, mismatched voices, relatively short) and does not add to immersion. Fallout balanced the amount of spoken dialogue and written dialogue with talking heads. Now...

{100}{}{You see General Maxson.}
{106}{Gen_1}{Hello, youngster. Cabbot said you wanted to talk. Look I'm uh . . .
I'm pretty stacked up right now, so I'll uh . . . I'll help you out as long
as you don't start flappin' your gums too much. You know, outsiders are like that,
always jawin' . . . Hehehe. Kinda like me, huh?}
{109}{Gen_2}{I can't. I just moderate these endless damn meetings. There's four Elders,
and me, you see? I break up fights and tie votes. Now, if all four vote to pick our
noses while an army rolls in here and kicks our collective butt, there's not a helluva
lot I can do about it.}
{112}{Gen_2a}{Tradition. It's hard to change our ways. Now, maybe if the Elders had some real info, they'd get off their brains and do something.}
{113}{Gen_3}{An Initiate not born here. You're the first Outsider we've let join in
a long, long time. Well, near on twenty years now. }
{116}{Gen_4}{Because we need to do something. An army's gatherin', Hub-caravans are
disappearin', and our scouts sure as hell ain't gettin' the job done.
So the Elders actually did something once and figured the right
Outsider might have something to offer. That Outsider is you... We hope.}
{122}{Gen_5}{When we heard about the missing caravans, we sent out a few
scouts east and the north. The ones who went north never returned. One came
back from the east. He talked about a score of strange beings, all muscle
with burnin' eyes. The Elder's aren't doin' squat, but I'm getting ready
just the same.}
{128}{Gen_6}{They may or may not be good scouts, but don't question
the truthfulness of my men. We can revoke your Initiate status at any time.}
{131}{Gen_7}{That's it. I warned the Elders that bringin' in an Outsider could be trouble. (shouting aside) Guards! There's an Initiate here who needs some quiet time to discover some manners. }
{132}{Gen_8}{You're an Outsider, but I expect you to learn our ways. I'll be watching. Now, ask your questions. }
{133}{Gen_9}{Good. Anything else you need to ask? }
{134}{Gen_10}{Deep in the mountains. He couldn't be more specific.}
{138}{Gen_11a}{Yeah, Fire away.}
{139}{Gen_11b}{Sure.}
{140}{Gen_11c}{Shoot.}
{141}{Gen_12}{I got a gut feeling there's a small force in the east and
a much bigger one in the north. The Elders are collecting dust because
none of the scouts returned from the north. I can't do anything but watch.}
{146}{Gen_13}{Well the Merchants from the Hub told us a bunch of caravans
disappeared on their way up north. I think there's an army in the mountains,
but the Elders, well, they don't want to act until they're sure. }
{151}{Gen_14}{The word I got was that the caravans disappeared around the
southern tip of the mountains to the east. I imagine the Hub merchants can probably
tell you more.}
{155}{Gen_15g}{See you around, Initiate. You're not so bad...for an Outsider.}
{156}{Gen_15n}{Goodbye, Initiate.}
{157}{Gen_15b}{Goodbye!}
{158}{Gen_16}{I grew up too isolated here. Can you imagine spending your whole life inside one small place, then having to go out into the world? }
{162}{Gen_17}{Then you understand the problem. To survive, we need someone who knows the outside. Like you. }
{165}{Gen_18}{Well . . . with what I guess is coming, we don't have time for anyone
who's gonna . . . not contribute. Now, you either work with us, or you take a hike.}
{168}{Gen_19}{Your choice. Hope you can live with it. }
{169}{Gen_20}{What? It's who we are and what we live for. It's ideals. As you spend
more time with us, hopefully, you'll understand.}
{172}{Gen_21}{Our main goal is to survive. The Scribes copy old plans for weapons or design new ones, and the Knights make the guns from 'em. Most guns come from us.}
{176}{Gen_22}{That's the way we get our supplies.}
{180}{Gen_23}{All? It's damn important. It's critical to our survival.}
{184}{Gen_26}{Then you need to get sure. Because being unsure is bound to get you killed.}
{186}{Gen_28}{Look I don't have time for a story that long right now. Here. All of us grew up on this. }
{187}{Gen_29n}{There's rumors concerning the missing caravans in the Hub, as well as the strange army brewing in the eastern mountains. }
{192}{Gen_29b}{I don't take stock in rumors. }
{193}{Gen_30}{Ahh . . . Hello again, Initiate. Are things going well? }
{197}{Gen_32}{I'm sorry we're not what you're used to but you could show a little self-discipline. }
{201}{Gen_34}{What the hell do you want now? }
{205}{Gen_35}{Whaddya got? }
{209}{Gen_36}{You've seen 'em? This might actually get the Elders to do something.
I'm gonna get on this, thanks!}
{210}{Gen_38}{Uh . . . What's he plan to do with this . . . army of his? }
{213}{Gen_39}{Finally! Well this'll get the Elders off their butts. We'll fortify the Fortress and surprise those damn mutants.}
{216}{Gen_40}{So?}
{220}{}{Help me attack the Master's base. I know where it is.}
{221}{Gen_42}{Hmmm. Not a bad plan. Tell you what, let me go try and beat it into the Elders. No guarantees, but I'll try.}
{222}{Gen_43}{Then get out. I have work to do.}
{223}{Gen_44}{Pretty interesting set of priorities and loyalties you got there.}
{226}{Gen_44a}{I'll take it. We need the information to save lives.}
{228}{Gen_44b}{Well, if he does, hope you find a place to use your scripts.}
{229}{Gen_45}{Well, how about nothing! Guards, kick this fool out. By God!
We'll defend the Brotherhood without your damn help.}
{230}{Gen_46}{What do you think you're doing? Put that down. Put it down now!}
{231}{Gen_47}{That's it. Guards! Take this idiot away!}
{232}{Gen_48}{Hey, hey, hey, hey! Hold on now. Stop that. Stop it right now!}
{233}{Gen_49}{Like I said...}
{234}{Gen_50}{I said...}
{235}{Gen_51}{I am not in the habit of repeating myself. So open your ears.}
{236}{Gen_52}{Look I told ya' already. It's not my fault if you didn't get it.}
{237}{Gen_52a}{That's where you are. You want the long version, go talk to Vree.}
{238}{Gen_52b}{Mathia's my assistant.}
{239}{Gen_53}{Oh, he's a good kid, even if he does want to be a Scribe.}
{240}{Gen_54}{Vree's the head Scribe. She's usually in the Library, she always likes to talk. }
{241}{Gen_55}{We keep weapon specs and history there.}
{242}{Gen_56}{Rhombo's been here a long time. A bit stiff, but a helluva soldier.}
{243}{Gen_58}{Hehehe. A fine, handsome, upstanding man. The High Elder position is to mediate the meetings between the Elders. You see, two years ago I got talked into it. If I'd of known then...}
{244}{Gen_59}{Well you see there's four of them and that's about all they can ever agree on. They can't even agree if they want to piss, much less pick a pot to piss in.}
{245}{Gen_60}{Well that's what you are. Initiates train and learn to become knights or scribes.}
{246}{Gen_61}{Well, Scribes copy down the weapon specs. We've got information all the way back to
my granddad. Sometimes a scribe comes up with a new idea for a weapon. Hehehe. Doesn't happen too often.
They all answer to Vree.}
{247}{Gen_62}{The Knights make the weapons. And when he's good enough, a Knight can advance to become a Paladin and then an Elder and so forth. Right now Rhombus is the head of the Knights.}
{248}{Gen_63}{Paladins are in charge of all security and outside activities. I remember tradin' with the Hub, goin' on scouting missions for the Elders. Ah man, those ware a good times.}
{249}{Gen_64}{The Hub's down to the southeast. They trade us food and things for the weapons we make here. Now if you're ever down there, you talk to Butch Harris.}
{250}{Gen_65}{Butch is the head of the Far Go Traders. He's a little slimy, but he's not a total waste. Unlike those Water Merchants. Bunch of damn vultures, all of 'em.}
{251}{Gen_66}{They're the main ones we trade with. Not totally trustworthy, but not as bad as the others. }
{252}{Gen_67}{You can't trust them. A few years ago, they offered us Water for a huge stockpile of weapons. We told them no, and you know what they did? Sent in thieves to steal the weapons! We caught 'em, but the Elders voted down going to the Hub to teach the merchants a lesson.}
{253}{Gen_68}{Holo discs? Hmm? I haven't seen those in a while.}
{254}{Gen_69}{Vree has it someplace in the Library.}
{255}{Gen_70}{Roger Maxson huh? Well he led our people here in the great Exodus, started the Brotherhood from scratch. Quite a leader.}
{256}{Gen_71}{Well that was when my granddad, Roger Maxson, led his soldiers here and started the Brotherhood. He never mentioned where they came from, but it doesn't really matter, 'cause...well, this is our home now.}
{257}{Gen_72}{Well I believe there's an army massing to the north and in the mountains to the east, but I don't have any way to prove it. The Elders, they won't even listen. }
{258}{Gen_73}{A bunch of religious whackos, if you ask me. I think their main church is in the Boneyard.}
{259}{Gen_75}{Well I don't know a lot. There's a bunch of gangs around there, as well as Adytum and the Children of the Cathedral. Not much else. It's pretty damn desolate.}
{260}{Gen_76}{Well, there's not much to tell. I never ran into any of them. I've heard they're a problem for the people of Adytum, though.}
{261}{Gen_77}{That's a settlement down in the Boneyard. I went there...oh...a long time ago. I was on a scouting mission for the Elders.}
{262}{Gen_78}{Oh. Just another stupid rumor. Some people say it's a huge fanged monster and others say it's a vampire.}
{263}{Gen_79}{Oh, I don't know anything about that.}
{264}{Gen_80}{What was that? No. I don't believe I've ever heard of it.}
{265}{Gen_81a}{Hell if I know.}
{266}{}{Surprised to see me? And let you have all the fun?}
{267}{}{How did you convince the Elders?}
{268}{Gen_82a}{Oh wasn't hard at all. I just calmly explained the situation. And bingo here we are. Lead on, my friend.}
{269}{Gen_83}{What are you doing in here? This is for Elders.}
{270}{}{Sorry, I'll just leave.}
{271}{}{I don't care, I'm staying.}
{272}{Gen_84}{Good, now shut the door on the way out.}
{273}{Gen_84a}{I'm telling you, Do not interfere.}
{274}{Gen_85}{Ha! You forget. I used to teach this stuff.}
{275}{Gen_86}{Contrary to opinion, we don't want soldiers will no brains whatsoever.}
{276}{Gen_87}{Well, I suggest you talk to my assistant, Mathia, about that.}

Now, does a single NPC in Oblivion has this amount of spoken dialogue? (and this is after I cut the Tell-Me-About section.)

facial animation,

Half-Life 2 > Oblivon

a proper post-nuclear wasteland as far as the eye can see,

Yes, a giant wasteland measuring 32 square kilometers. ZOMG! Twice as big as Oblivion!

Except this isn't a wasteland.

Fallout took action in California. A burnt out, obliterated version of the state and the map covered much, much more than 32 square kilometers.

untold number of eerily-lit bunkers inhabited by mutant hordes.

There are no "untold numbers" of "bunkers inhabited by mutant hordes" in Fallout and never were.

The rest of you luddites can go back to shrieking in fear and chucking rocks at your own shadows.

Have intercourse with yourself too!

depth and complexity of diablo

Does not compute.

Well in all fairness, whilst Fallout was 'large', the actual wilderness was composed mainly of repeated random encounters, and not actual real ground, if you had a random encouter it'd LOAD up a map, it's not as if you were actually walking around in it, if we're gonna go actual size wise where you can actually WALK through the entire world(Not using an overscreen map), Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall is probably the largest game in the universe, around twice the size of Great Britain..

That's the point. It's impossible to reproduc a wasteland (which, by definition, is mostly empty) in Oblivion in a 1:1 scale. And if it was scaled down, it would no longer be a wasteland but a sandbox.

pockets of wasteland here and there can be somewhat believeable

agreed I look forward to a reinterpretation of the fallout universe ...steps forward people not backwards

I love you Mikael Grizzly!

And on a side note, I really like turn based combat, so much that I turned it on in FO:tactics. Couldn't play real time, it was stupid.

CptStern, when Bethesda can't even make a step forward with their OWN series(Oblivion was a step backwards compared Morrowind if you compare them both as RPGs, which Oblivion CLAIMS to be), what makes you think they could do even BETTER with a series that isnt even their own?

apples to oranges: oblivion and marrowind are essentially the same (1st/3rd person pov, sandbox world) ..we dont even know what's in store for F3 ..so it's a little premature to be comparing the two ..however having said that you can bet that in terms of gameplay taking it out of an isometric pov and moving beyond turn based simplistic combat is a step fowards ...I thought that point was glaring obvious

pockets of wasteland here and there can be somewhat believeable

Not "pockets". Fallout world is wasteland. The entire world is one giant wasteland with pockes of civilization, not the other way round.

agreed I look forward to a reinterpretation of the fallout universe ...steps forward people not backwards

Reinterpretation? Fallout has three core elements: 50's pulp sci-fi stylisation, pen and paper role playing game feel, choice and consequence. These are the elements that cannot be removed from the game, as it stops being Fallout (eg. you remove the role-playing, you get FO:pOS, you remove choice and consequence and rape other elements, you get FO:T). There is nothing to interpret here.

Thankfully, according to NMA's sources, the action will take place on the east coast, so there won't be too many opportunities to rape Fallout's lore.

apples to oranges: oblivion and marrowind are essentially the same (1st/3rd person pov, sandbox world)

Apples to oranges: Dodge Charger and Dodge Ram are essentially the same (steering wheel, engine).

..we dont even know what's in store for F3 ..so it's a little premature to be comparing the two

Then when? After the game's released and fan input will be as useful as a pair of thermal underwear in Death Valley at high noon?

turn based simplistic combat

You are joking, right? Because with this logic, Jagged Alliance 2's combat model is simplistic, while Diablo 2's is highly complex and advanced.

Stern, get your facts straight. This is Fallout. This is seriose busines.

As if Oblivions combat what any better, the AI had horrible pathfinding issues, but then again Oblivion was quite melee focused, I remembered I just jumped onto a rock as a level 10 char and killed a ton of guards just because they couldn't reach me and I could shoot an infinite amount of fireballs into them.

What I would love for Fallout 3 combat(Just dreaming) would be either them using the S2(Silent Storm system), it's Turn-Based Combat or secondly, Brigade E5 Jagged Alliance (It's real-time PAUSABLE).

Bethesda - employees have claimed to have played the games and say they are going to keep all the important aspects from the Fallout - series (who wouldnt).

I just hope it will be the same turn based, isometric view with atleast the same weapons from the last series and some new ones ofcourse,humor, good plot,free-will of play etc ... you get the idea.

I myself have only played Fallout 2 and Tactics and they are both imho good. ( Yes, even Tactics.) Haven't tried Fallout 1 though but I am not so willing to play it because of the timelimit but it has some important story facts so the next chance I have, I will get it next. ( yes I guess that doesnt make me a good Fallout - fan.)

And I am not going to touch BoS because of hearing and reading what a huge screw up it was.

CLAIMED. That's the key word here.

Of course no real-world weapons should be implemented.

The 500 day time-limit is removed in 1.02, and the water chip retrieval limit is 150 days at start and can be extended by 100 days at the Hub. To lose because of the limit you'd really need to be slow.
