I think it was announced that they did. All Bethesda will now be exclusively run by id Tech 5. New Vegas will hopefully be Gamebryo's swan song.

Sure... if you want to miss out on understanding half the content and story.

Hence why you can just go read up on extensive plot summaries for the previous games.

It's probably what I'll do rather than replay Fallout 1 and 2 just before and because New Vegas is around the corner.

By the way, do you happen to have a reliable source that you'll miss out on understanding half the story if you haven't played Fallout 1 and 2?

I take it you've read the complete story script for New Vegas then since you know this for sure?

I envy you.:p

Todd Howard on their unannounced title:

Todd Howard: The technology is ours and it is inspired by the technology we have. We have a lot of it. But that's our starting point - the Fallout 3 tech. It started with Morrowind, we went to Oblivion, we did a lot between Oblivion and Fallout 3 because now we had final hardware - with Oblivion we had six months on final hardware, so Fallout 3 technically does a lot more than Oblivion. The new stuff is an even bigger jump from that.

I can say it is on the existing platforms, which we're really happy with. You almost feel like you have a new console when you see the game.

An even bigger jump than Oblivion to Fallout 3? So what, the same exact engine again but now with 10% more polygons but still no environment shadows?

I swear to god, if they still don't have environment shadows in that shitty engine with their next game I'm done with Bethesda games.

Oh boy, large amounts of tech that are almost backwards-compatible with 3DFX cards and Pentium IIs!

Occam's Razor. The story of New Vegas is deeply rooted in Van Buren/Fallout/Fallout 2, so playing it without playing earlier games and reading up on Van Buren is like picking up Children of Dune and wondering why you don't understand half the stuff included in it.

I think it makes no business-sense from Bethesda's perspective to make a game that requires you to have played through two other games and read design documents for a third unreleased game to understand half of the entire games story.

So honestly, I'm skeptical.

It might also just be that it's an error of communication and you and I have different perspectives on what "understanding the story" entails/means.

too bad, good engines don't save the writing.

Well, that's a pretty informative preview for the game. It seems I'm obliged to play the older Fallout games to have a better understanding of the story.

One of the best previews so far imo.

What you will miss is references to the past games, I heard there are plenty.

Yes, references is one thing, but I don't view references as being 50% of the story.

Either way is fine with me anyway, I've played through Fallout 1 and 2 twice each(Never got through Tactics though) and read not all but quite a lot of Van Buren docs.

Anyway, will you guys be doing your first playthrough in the normal mode or the hardcore mode?

I'm not sure myself yet.

I guess I'll probably do it too, since I've always been into wilderness survival simulations(or in this case wasteland.)

Hardcore is tempting, but I like free-roaming and exploring without too many worries. I will keep hardcore for a second playthrough.

I think I'm just going to do normal mode first to understand how the game functions, and because I like to be equipped with a huge amount of ammo without having to worry about its weight. I'll save hardcore mode for my second play-through of the game.

hardcore right out the box, that is if i do pick this up when it's released. not sure yet, not really followed this much.

what's being changed from fallout 3 (aside from hardcore mode)?

Let's see:

  • New perks are gained after every two levels instead of one.
  • Instead of simply zooming in in real-time combat, you'll now be able to look through the iron sights of your weapon.
  • Melee weapons have unique moves while using the V.A.T.S. system.
  • If a supposed enemy has a high damage threshold, some weapons will become ineffective while being used against that specific enemy.
  • The so-called 'Kill Cam' has been added, which allows players who usually fight enemies in real-time combat the option of seeing their 'killing bullet' in slow motion hit their opponent.
  • The companion wheel has been added, allowing players to quickly give commands to their companions while in a battle. Also, giving a sniper a shotgun will reduce the effectiveness of their attacks.
  • A whole new system of gambling has been added, allowing players to play a variety of common gambling games like Blackjack, Five-Card Draw, etc. Luck plays a mentionable factor in winning these games, and floor managers will congratulate your victories with either food or a VIP room in their hotel.

And that's about all we know for now.

-Iron sights
-Special melee moves in VATS
-Damage threshold
-A reputation system (among the game's different factions)
-Weapon modding
-Companion Wheel
-Gambling

EDIT: Ninja'd as always.....

At least your list is more simplified than mine.

hmm, none of those are really things i'd have at the top of my list to make a game on the fallout 3 engine or made by the same team better, but i did enjoy fallout 3, all flaws aside, so cool... i guess.

Watch this. Explains a lot of the new stuff.

The game looks nice, and I like the nonlinear path Obsidian has chosen to continue and improve upon in regards to New Vegas, but I wish they would fix the third person mode, or just remove it entirely. It still looks buggy and unnatural from the footage I've seen.

Just don't like what they do to gameplay - take up a large portion of the screen, bounce about when you're shooting, less precise and more random. They have their place, but nearly every bloody fps in using ironsights these days. Thanks **** for TF2, L4D and Halo!

I kind of agree with you in some cases, but I also find it amusing that, despite being the series that first popularized it, CoD is still one of the few shooters to actually do iron sights right. Which isn't to say they're realistic in CoD - if anything they're far too accurate and don't have very pronounced recoil - but that's kind of what makes them so much more tolerable than some other "me-too" games that use them now. That said I preferred them much more when CoD was still a WW2 shooter, because, you know, the iron sights were actually iron. All these new fangled holographic sights and junk make it kind of pointless and obtrusive. (Ever tried using the ACOG scope in MW2? Eugh.)

Anyway, not really seeing the point of using them here. If anything you'd think they'd want to put as little attention on their gun models as possible. Good god those textures are ugly up close...

It's an improvement over FO3's "zoom in mode". It also seems like they're trying to encourage you to play more out of VATS. It'll probably still suck but at least the option is there

I much prefer the zoom in method, and would replace ironsights with it in every fps bar maybe something like Flashpoint if given the choice. Fair enough for something simmy, but arcady, gtfo!

Heh, I heard they will be re-using some of Mark Morgan's old FO tracks in the game, nice. Bad news is, they are also recycling some of FO3's music as well.
