HAH HAH HAH. Both attempts are amateur at best. It takes the mind of a true master to comprehend the purity of water.

Whatever ya weird'o
:smoking:

lol ... imho HL2s water rapes FCs ...

and i have a newsflash for ppl that played the HL2 so called "leaked beta" it didnt have DX9 support to compare it to FC ....

people who played the beta weren't playing anything near as good as the final build, there is no use comparing.

Dunno if this have been posted already but here goes.

Both HL2 and Farcry have kickass water effects. Anyone who says the water in either game looks shit is a fukhead and deserves to be shot 10 times in the balls (think for urselves guys, don't let ur fanboy instincts take over). However, in FC only the terrain is reflected; folliage and character models are not. In HL2 on the other hand everything is rendered in the reflection.

From what we've seen at E3 and the features we were told about (refraction, diffraction etc.), in the end I would say the HL2 water will look better and more realistic. We'll just have to see it when it releases eh?

here are some better far cry shots that i took

they look good but somehow not quite as gritty and real as HL2's, not being a hapless fan boy i just think they're not as refined.

yes, foliage is reflected... look at my screens. even explosions are reflected...and, yeah, i do prefer the hl2 graphical style over every other game, just wanted to show some FC shots that i think are better than most of the review sites' shots. (i love the game :))

Hmm. It wasn't doing that on a friends 9700pro. Maybe something was disabled :S.

i have to agree, xenospirit could kick umop's dad's balls and make him squirm.

No way. He is a big ass martial arts ape redneck dude. Totally unkickable. 6'5".

Anyways, I wasn't saying "my dad can beat up your dad" to Xeno, I was saying it to the troll who started the thread to mock his mindset with a touch of humor. Maybe it failed :|

Real life water > HL2 water
[sarcasm]Genious[/scarcasm]

Farcry water = pretty
HL2 water = realistic

It seems all farcry fanboys have is pretty water. At least HL2 fanboys have more to go on than pretty water.

Try FarCry on radeon 9800pro/xt or with any truly directx 9.0 supporting card and you will see the water in its true form :) It doesn't look plastic and it's just fine. But I'm still waiting more realistic water from HL2 though. Those pics posted from Farcry are really taken with low-end machines.

And I'm new and in love for HL2, HI all ! :cat:

It seems far crys 'thing' is its water and it probably should be as it plays a big part in the game, with all the islands and stuff, but i think theres going to be more to hl2 than the water in the game.

Having said that from screen shots Ive seen, I think hl2s water looks more realistic and far crys just looks nice (from not so close up).

IMO, The two games are going for different graphical styles. FarCry is more cartoonish, whereas Half-Life 2 is really going for the realistic look.

That's all there is to it. FarCry's graphical style suits the game fine, and Half-Life 2's should as well.

Yeah bring it on friggin fan-boys...FLAME WAR.

Hey man, to be honest. I'm by no mean a fanboy of either game. But your post give me the impression of you having play HL2 already.

sure you're not a Far Cry fanboy Caminante...

Anyway back on topic. Far Cry's water looks very pretty, but thats how its supposed to be, pretty. Half-Life 2's water is aimed more towards realism.
Like i said in another earlier thread... about this SAME topic... 2 MONTHS AGO, HL2's water looks more realistic but Far Cry's makes me want to go into the water. Also Jackal Hit, did you toy around in the console to get that amount of reflectivity on the water?
I had to do that to get it to work in the demo. Haven't tried it with the full game yet though.

omfg.

you sir are wrong.

Ive played both far cry and the hl2 beta.

Hl2 wins my vote by a mile.

I concur with the people that you know that have played it!

FC's water looks WAY too.. jello like :) Even on Ultra High, it doesn't look right

Anyway, since when does water make an engine? :| lol

The fx are nice in FC, but I agree...the Far Cry world is like one big cartoony/tech world, where there is fluorescent grass and where cars seem to fly in the air like a paper airplane. And then again, weird walking models, with 35600000 polygons, just for the legs!

As said before, it doesn't really matter :p

Error;
Fanboy.lib not found; Restart Hl2 Universe?(Y/N):

If this thread gets worse I would close it

I agree, the FarCry water does look a little repetitive from a distance as well as being slightly too reflective for my taste.

I will be honest.... you all know im not a farcry fanboy....

The water in farcry is some of the best ive seen in a released game to date. But hl2's is in a class all its own.

Well i saw Far Cry and Half-Life 2 "Games", and i could say you this: "HALF-LIFE 2 WATER IS REALY THAN FAR CRY'S WATER."

Far Cry's water is look like a "Zele" something like Pouding, you know, it's sweet and chokolate.Doesnt matter

And Earth, and water and enemy.Everything is real in HL2.

In Far Cry i like a night mission, and full moon.Like in CoD.

To all HL2 fanboys, have you even seen or played FarCry (and it's realistic water rendition, complete with reflection)?

Yes, I completed Far Cry and it's a very nice game with the next-generation graphics. But the thing is... Those next-generation graphics are very new and FC was thé first game that used those graphics. HL2 will have a better, faster & more reliable engine based on next-generation graphics AND when HL2 will come, there will have been alot more time to 'clean up' the next-generation graphics (make it even better) than Crytek had the time to do this...

yeh ive seen farcrys water, its good, kinda the next level up from the UT2003/4 water, but it doesnt refract the contents, thats just important to me, so ima have to go with HL2, if that makes me a fanboy, fine by me :)

Guys, lets all assume that the topicstarter is just being sarcastic..that's the only explanation I have for stating something stupid as he did..;]

I thought it was sarcasm from the get-go, which is I why i 'hehe'd.

I've heard there is a 'reflect-all'patch for farcry. But I could be mistaking.

Farcy's water = actual 3d animated water, so it adds to the effect, also the shore-line effects are brilliant.

Hl2's Water = so far all the water I have seen has been flat, with no shoreline effects, this is both in the *cough* leak, and the official stuff.

however, Farcry's water is best what it suited for... the tropics. it doesnt look good anywhere else (see swamp level), they haven multiple shore effects/fog/water types... but its just Farcry style.

HL2, although only flat and applying one shader still beats out Farcry in terms of style.
(imo) and thats what affects which you think is more advanced.... your opinion.
I love Hl2's style (the water fits in perfectly) I also think Farcry's water is fantastic, but in direct comparison I like Hl2's grittiness more.

actually Farcry's water shaders do. just not the ocean shader (there are multiple water shaders in Farcry) look in the Lab after "treehouse" or the water in the swamp for examples.

and there is a patch for all reflections on the water (but it isnt that impressive)

Hmm, this makes you look kind of stupid, take a look at the Tech movie.
Dont they show they can make water with small rimples (little wind) and lager rimples (storm).

And look at the buggy vid, when the fly thing flies over the water, the water rimples very nicely

FC engine does water refraction, works fine on my system. I think from distance HL2 water looks better, close up it is on par with FC. but judging from the HL2 screens (might change in the final game) it doesn't have the nice waves on the shore like FC.

My god people, its only water. And its only a game!!!

Can this get any worse?!?!? :rolling:

those nice waves on the shore are nothing but a cool effect. There's nothing stopping anyone from doing that in Source. Infact it would be very easy to mimic it.

Far Cry's water looks pretty, but I can't say it actually looks like water. It looks like chrome (albeit see-through chrome, but you get my point) not water.
It also looks very repetitive from a distance, haven't yet seen this from HL2, although it could still be the case when you really zoom out a lot.

They both have reflecting surfaces, but HL2 uses a fresnel shader which has the effect that water is more reflective when looked at from a small angle or large distance and more refracting when you look at it from a high angle and small distance. Try it, when you stand in a lake, the water at your feet is perfectly clear and reflects virtually nothing, but in the distance, you can't see the bottom anymore and it's highly reflective.

And then the refraction, again they both have it but the water of HL2 refracts much stronger. The water of Far Cry is only a little bit distorted when you look closely at it. But this isn't a tech issue, Far Cry could do that too.

And then something we've not yet seen from HL2, or not as it is meant to be. The HDR lighting gives much more realistic reflections of the sky on water, bright area's like the reflection of the sun actually look bright. A small demo is seen in the HDR demo where there's those two sphere's where the right one has a water shader (I think) and the reflection of the sun looks very nice. But we haven't seen this yet in a scene like Docks. But it should be nice.
