Catch Me If You Can - 8/10

I have seen myself slowly transform into a Leonardo DiCaprio fanboy over the past two years. It was when I saw him play as Howard Hughes in The Aviator when I started to gain respect for him and abandon my old feelings that he was a whiny, little lady's man (and I didn't have many good reasons to believe this, I was a young teenager).

DiCaprio really delivered in this film throughout, and Tom Hank's character complemented his--a fun, contrasting duo to see on the screen. It wasn't anything elaborate, perhaps a little unbelievable from time to time, but it was a fun ride. I really enjoyed the entire presentation--the cinematography, the music, the settings. Definitely one of my favorite Spielberg films in recent times.

You do realize that everything in that film actually happened more or less?

Terminator Salvation - 2/10

Holy shit I didn't even finish it because I can't take the two main characters acting. I have never shut off a movie for the acting, honestly it's ****ing horrible. It is only a half hour in, I just can't watch this shit anymore Christian Bale sucks ass, he's the worst of all them, there aren't any good actors in this movie... It's like they are all trying to be the most badass they can be but no one can pull it off.. It's kind of sad someone as big as Bale is the worst of the lot. Micheal Ironside is the only half decent one there, but he is just acting the same character he is in everything he does (if you remember him in Starship Troopers - same character here).. It only got 2 because it's got some cool action scenes, and they had the good sense to just make the little girl not talk because that would just be one more horrible actor.

They wasted ironside on that shit movie? ;(

THX 1138(1971) 8/10

Very futuristic yet wierd movie about gov't control and was George Lucas's breakout hit. If you liked movies/books like Brazil, 1984, Equilibrium, A Brave New World, Minority Report etc then you will like this movie. Stars Robert Duvall and holy cow does he look young in this movie

Magnolia: 9/10

Beautifully paced, fantastic use of sound and music. Even at around three hours, it doesn't drag anywhere. Just really, really good.

Ah thanks, I forgot the title of that movie, and had given up hope on watching it.

Anyway, Nine - wtf/10

The movie is about... something. I'm not sure what. It has people singing in it. Whatever message that it was trying to convey... No, whatever plot it had, I'm pretty sure that they had problems during the "stream of thought" process.

It's a musical adaptation of a broadway adaptation of Fellini's "8 1/2". If it's anything like the original film, it'd be a ****ing trip.

Paranormal Activity - 0.00000000001/10

There was absolutely no scary scene in that movie. And i mean absolutely nothing.Hell , this peace of shit movie doesn't even deserve to be on this scale. Not even worth mentioning.

Avatar: 7/10. effects only: 9/10

cartoony one dimensional version of Dances with Wolves. Just cant take the plot seriously because the aliens are far too cartoony and one dimensional to find any sympathy for. the wrap up at the end was needless and Sigourney Weaver (the only actor in the movie) was underused

rofl Stern good to see you're back, my roommate when describing Avatar to me called it "sci-fi Dances with Wolves"

I heard it described as sci-fi Pocahontis or however you spell it, but I never seen Pocahontis or Dances with Wolves, so meh.

The Counterfeiters - 10/10

World War 2 just never ceases to amaze me, so many little stories going on in such a global event. Its a German film with subtitles, but the acting is nothing short of mind blowing. Its basically regarding a counterfeiting scheme that the Germans set up to try and bankrupt the Allied banks, by using prisoners in the concentration camps with the skills to do it. Its just an amazing outlook on the lengths that people go to survive, dismaying principles and ethics, and not from the prisoner's perspective. One of the best films I've seen in a while, highly recommended.

Tim Minchin - So F**king Rock Live

Fucking funny. Tim is pretty now much my favorite person ever. I knew most of the songs, but they were still hilarious, but possibly even better was the pretend awkward stand-up he did between the songs.

Horsemen - 1/10

My dad was watching this. I thought it was pretty awful. Basically there are a bunch of gory murders with clues inspired by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but in the end, it turns out that...

all the murders were committed by a bunch of emo teens, one of whom is slightly more psychotic, because they didn't get enough love from their mommies and daddies. :|

Saw 500 days of summer, it was bloody excellent!

Fav scene right here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgVNgYXFi_Q (lack's Han :( )

My favorite is at the very end of the Expectations/Reality segment where he runs out and the scene turns into one of his sketches. I thought it was executed perfectly. Everything just crashes down at that point. Made me feel really sorry for the guy.

I thought it one of the best films I've seen in a long time, among the scariest too.

But hey, I guess you prefer rehashed big budget flicks from the Hollywood production line

Time Minchin is the man. I recently saw Ready For This? at the Appollo and it was excellent.

I think the purpose of the movie was to induce the audience into hallucinations.

Sherlock Holmes - 8/10

Very enjoyable and humorous. I was rather impressed with how it was directed and the plot was surprisingly clever, although I figured out the underlying solution to the overall picture before it was uncovered. But yeah, I was pleasantly surprised, good show you old cock!

Hackers - 10/10

Everything about this movie is hilarious. Secret Service men jumping through windows to arrest kids, the rollerblading, the yellow floppy disk, hacking somehow looking like this:

hackers.jpg

Also full of some pretty great quotes, my favorite being "It's in that place I put that thing that time."

I think I laugh more during this movie than any other movie.

Another memorable line from that film is "TWENTY EIGHT POINT EIGHT KAY BEE PEE ESS MODEM...!!!", said in an awed voice by a hacker marvelling at his friend's state of the art hardware.

Tall Men Riding - 8/10

You just can't go wrong with most westerns. Unless its Gene Autry, that singing bastard.

Alien - 8/10

Mainly because it was very well shot. I'm not sure I agreed with some of the pacing and such, but as a scurry alien movie, it's pretty damn good.

Terminator - 7/10

80s action is pretty cheesy.

Lars and the Real Girl - 8/10

Cute, funny, and just a little twee.

Kinsey - 7/10

A damn interesting topic let down by a few clunky lines and an awful awful montage. Also Qui-Gon Jinn.

In Bruges - 9/10

God damn I love this film so much

Yeah I dunno I mean I did watch it not all in one go but it seemed like it wasn't particularly well organised. As in some scenes were really drawn out, and some that could have deserved some more attention were over far too quickly.

Wow a mediocre Terminator review and Samon didn't even pop a vein. How long have I been gone? (Not long enough BadHat HA HA HA HA)

Some movies what I have watched recently in no particular order:

Zombieland - 6/10
Good, unclean fun. **** yeah Tallahassee.

The Illusionist (again) - 7/10
Lovely imagery, engaging plot, but on second watch the Usual Suspects-style ending was kind of forced. We're led to believe the inspector (played wonderfully by Giamatti) is piecing everything together himself, but half of the things we're shown he couldn't have even known. Still, very watchable. Also, I ****ing love the fashion from this period, goddamn.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance - 8/10
I wasn't sure what to think of this at first, but I ended up liking it a lot. By turns horrific, frantic and subdued, it manages to keep a light pacing while sustaining an ever-building tension, without ever overstating itself. I especially love how most everything is presented to the viewer candidly, often without explanation. There are scenes near the start which are confusing at first, but once everything is put into context it achieves a wonderful sense of symmetry.

Oldboy - 9/10
Love it. Not really much I can say that most people here won't already know (and for those who don't: watch it). Having only half-watched it before I don't think I understood the ending last time, but it's probably my favourite part now. Dark yet rewarding in a twisted way.

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - 4/10
Eugh. Probably the polar opposite of Mr. Vengeance: frantically paced throughout without much payoff. It throws a dozen different plot points and characters at you within the first hour, very few of which matter or even have any meaning later on (oh wow she got her prison buddy to make her a needlessly ornate gun because EVERYTHING SHOULD BE BEAUTIFUL I can see how this is important). Redeeming points: there's some beautiful imagery on show, almost too beautiful in parts (BUT BEAUTY IS A CENTRAL THEME OF THE MOVIE DON'T YOU SEE BLAHGHGHAHAHGA). The actor behind the main character plays the role well for the most part. Also, the scene where the victims are all taking revenge on the villain is suitably dark and memorable, really the only part that seems to belong in the trilogy.

The Mist - 8/10
My kinda horror. Nice monster design. Preacher lady was maybe overacted just a tad, even though that's probably what they were going for.

Most depressing ending I've seen probably since Grave of the Fireflies though, christ.

The Thing - 8/10
Pretty great. Probably gonna get some rage for this, but it's actually a pretty typical horror movie beneath the awesome monster effects and good (mostly) acting, right down to the dumb "survivors" who won't stop leaving each other alone even after they discover that's kind of a bad idea. Even so, great movie. Edit: Oh yeah, and I love the ****ing Commodore 64 that could calculate the outcome of an unknown alien infection on a global scale in about 2 seconds flat. :V

Heat - 3/10
Welp I finally saw this after hearing so much about the AWESOME action scenes. So I sit down to watch TWO HOURS AND FOURTY MINUTES of what is sure to be many AWESOME action scenes, but really whoops it's just one action scene that occupies about twenty minutes and a lame showdown right at the end ENJOY YOUR TWO HOURS OF USELESS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT INVOLVING PEOPLE YOU COULDN'T CARE LESS ABOUT.

Whoever recommended you Heat for its AWESOME ACTION SCENES rather than its intricate plot, well-drawn characters and phenomenal acting was doing you a great injustice by setting up your expectations that way, because the action scenes are kind of the icing on the cake.

Man, I love The Mist though. It's not a brilliant film, and 8/10 is about right, but I do have a great affection for it.

The Professionals - 9/10

Another kickass western. Good story, A TWEEST, and good lord Claudia Cardinale was a fine looking woman.

Honestly I came to terms with the fact I wasn't seeing an AWESOME ACTION MOVIE about a half hour in, I just didn't think it was very good in general. The plot is fine I guess, but I just felt like the whole thing was a huge setup for when things inevitably went in the shitter, which sure enough they did. Bad guys pull off a heist, get killed, have wifes, oh no big sad. Daughter we have seen literally twice tries to kill self, oh no big sad. Cop forms relationship with bad guy leader, shoots him, oh no big sad. This is plainly evidenced (heh) by how sporadic and randomly pieced together the movie feels in the first half. It's just scene after scene of emotional build-up until they drop the bomb, and it only gets mildly interesting in the second half AFTER all the action has occured. The problem is you get the impression that every one of the characters knows exactly what to expect, so it's hard to feel a lot of sympathy for them. Besides which I didn't find any of them the least bit engaging or interesting, but maybe that's just me.

Also, as for the AWESOME ACTION SCENES, well namely the heist... yeah, not so impressed. I mean yeah it's all very gritty and loud and whoop-dee, and maybe this is just because I'm so jaded by shooters, but Val Kilmer fires (from extremely questionable cover) probably about 150 rounds from what appears to be a standard 30-shot clip without reloading. Immersion, thou hath been broketh...en.

I'm pretty sure everything Thomas Jane is in is amazing.

Recently watched this again with Director's Commentary on. Not usually a fan of that sort of thing but it was actually pretty interesting because it had Carpenter and Russell. Two guys just shooting the shit remembering things about making a movie a long time ago (think the commentary was recorded mid-90's or so, movie was '82). Explains a lot of what you're referring to, in that the movie is more about paranoia than horror. I think the short story it's based on was called "Who Are You?" or something like that, or they drew a lot from that or what have you. All around pretty interesting stuff.

Juxtapose that with watching Transformers with DC on. And I thought people just hated this douche-nozzle because he made shitty movies. Basically 3 hours of this nasally asshat droning on about how awesome he is. Probably had to do it alone because nobody else would want to sit around that long talking to him if they didn't have to.

I've seen it once, might watch it again sometime, but christ, the ending is just ****ing mean. I don't just mean it's a downer or anything but it feels like the writer/director suddenly took a massive shit on the protagonist with the intention of laughing at the audience's shocked faces. Other than that I like it.

I thought the ending was silly, and just done for dramatic effect.
They fought very hard to make it that far, and suddenly they all just give up? Come on. Even the kid had that look; The **** are you doing? Dad? Stupid.

Agreed. I might pick it up on DVD for the black and white cut; there is a real 50/60s horror vibe to it.

^ Or you could just, you know, turn your TV's colour all the way down. :|

I thought the ending was silly, and just done for dramatic effect.
I kind of agree with this, but ultimately it was much more appropriate for the mood the film set up prior to that than the original ending:

In the short story, they pick up a radio transmission with the name of a town or something in it. It ends with them driving off to an uncertain fate, but with a scrap of hope to cling to.
Also there was the main characters' promise to his son to never let the monsters get him, which probably motivated him somewhat, but yeah they probably could've waited a few minutes first. :p

Edit: You know what I thought was going to happen though, and might've been kind of neat? If crazy bible lady was right, and it was actually divine punishment. D:

The Hurt Locker - 8/10
Brutal. The side-plot involving James going nuts over that Beckham kid was a little unnecessary, but overall it (probably) captured the dread of being in that situation pretty nicely. Great cinematography, I loved how it was filmed documentary style without resorting to ****ING SHAKY CAMS, and the explosion effects were brilliant (in a horrific kind of way). Would've liked to see what became of the other two afterwards, but I guess that would've been a bit predictable.

9 - 6/10
Can't fault the animation, and the characters were likeable, but I think they tried to do too much with a simple premise. I didn't like the way they tried to connect everything to humanity, and the way things were before the apocalypse or whatever, instead of focusing on the puppet... guys, and what THEY were meant for. Also, the ending didn't make a lick of ****ing sense.

First of all, the ghost thing when they come out of the device? Dumb as heck. And why "free" them, anyway? If the device can transfer conciousness, or "souls" into inanimate objects, why not go fish up their bodies (the remaining ones anyway), or make new ones to bring them back in? After all, the puppets are the scientist, surely they could work something out. For god's sake, his house is still standing (somehow) at the end, go get his blueprints and figure it out!

The Downfall (Der Untergang) 9/10

Woah. I loved it. The movie is about the final days of Berlin during WW2, and it is beautiful. I loved it. Especially the part where
The Hitlerjugend kid shoots the girl in Wehrmacht uniform whose doing the nazi salute and then kills himself

That was seriously sad. I mean, I was kinda touched by that scene. Her complete total loyalty (albeit to a lunatic) and sense of duty despite her being barely in high school was admirable. 12 ~ 14 year old boys and girl operating a single 88-flak against all odds. Heh. Goebbels actually did a superb job with public education.
