"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted," Newell reportedly said in an interview with Game Informer.

He continued: "I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a do over. Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it'."

I agree they got off to a terrible start but it could always recover ...including the blue ray disk was too much of a gamble ...they could have competed with the 360 on pricepoint

Devs just need time to get their heads around working with such a bizarre new architecture. I am sure that at least the 1st-party Sony games will be incredible--they always are because of the unrivaled access to the tools that they like to priviledge their devs with. Still, once the really great "must-haves" come out for it, the system should have already have had a price cut and will suddenly seem much more worth it. As it stands now, its a HUGE waste of money.

big mistake on sony's part for not including some sort of online functionality ..MS could potentially draw in new customers with their iptv ..sony just cant compete in that area (they have a ip tv solution in the works but sony hasnt proven itself online ..at least not to gamers)

Gabe did not like they fact that the made the architecture especially different just so that if a game worked on the ps3 it would be very hard to port it over to the 360, the hardware is not just hard to program for because it is so new and people need to get used to it, it is mostly difficult just for the sake of being difficult.

I still think people are judging way too early. The PS2 was tough to develop for and had a faulty start etc etc. It also outsold the Xbox and Xbox 360 since its release as far as I know, and its online is practically non-existant.

oh god, don't let the_Z near this thread, it might kill him.

Wow, and this is totally unbiased, I mean Gabe Newells close ties with MS employees and himself being an ex-MS employee certainly doesn't mean he's biased!

Oh and he's on Nintendo's payroll btw.

To be honest I don't much care if Gabe likes it, Valve isn't a big console developer anyway. Besides, I think their "Orange" packages is being released for the PS3 as well, so ... yeah I really don't see the drawback to him having a negative opinion of it.

His comments just seem a bit irrational. Carmack also prefers developing for the 360, it's just that he said it in a much more logical and unbiased fashion.

Well if I'm not mistaken EA is developing their PS3 version (since they have experience with it) and Valve is internally developing the Xbox360 port...

Is it wrong for me to feel slight glee at Sony's potential failure?

I doubt Microsoft consider the Wii to be in direct competition with the 360, and neither does Gabe.

Listen, I'm not saying Gabe is extremely biased, but you do have to understand, he has several close ties with MS, do you think he'd want to mess them up?

Are you suprised that a PC developer would hate developing on the PS3? Kojima got it right when he said its hard to develop for, but the good developers will learn it.

Edit: I really doubt theyve spent much time with the hardware anyways. I'd give his opinion some serious thought if it was given after having released a game on the system. Too bad that won't happen since some 3rd party is handling the PS3 version of Half Life 2: Orange

The PS3 will hit its prime much later after developers have time to work with the SDK or whatever, and the price is much lower.

Sony stumbled but will not stay down.

I have played every system and I just can't believe some of the crap I am hearing about PS3. What are people's qualms with the online system? It's fine. It's lag-free, it's always up and running, and it's free!!!!! I'd rather have even a shitty, laggy online service that was free than I would to pay money for X-Box Live...

PS3 may be expensive but it's worth it. Blu-Ray built in (X-Box kids, pay an extra hundred to watch HD-DVD) It's got a web browser, all the features of live, and a lot of extra stuff you just need to see. Oh, and not to mention way more power than either of the others. X-Box already feels like retro future. PS3 will have its day and it will crush the others as PS2 did.

sure.

I agree with Gabe, to spend that much on a console is ridiculous anyway, no console is 'worth it' when it comes to those prices. Ill just stick with the PC and 360, and hope that they dont release it on the PS3 so i can laugh and in the hope that EP2 etc can be released earlier than expected on the other platforms.

I'd like to see Sony fail. I only play consoles at parties with lots of other people. people who game on consoles are pushing it, i think... They ain't that amazing. Computers ftw.

Yet still equal/less in price with the Ps3. Microsoft realizes not everyone wants HD-DVD or Blu-Ray and therefor doesn't force you to pay extra for it. Microsoft actually gives you a choice, something Sony isn't doing.

It's got a web browser
Who cares? Honestly, how many people do you know are actually going to use the web browser on the Ps3.

and a lot of extra stuff you just need to see.
like background downloading? Wait no.... it doesn't have that.

all the features of live,
Wrong

Not really. 360 has a better GPU and more memory to work with. Cell really isn't that much better than the 360's due to the small cache your working with on most of the cores. 360 also has the dedicated AA to free up more memory to be used for other things.

Thats great, turns out many people disagree.

nice to see a nb gets pwned

I used to like Sony, I thought the PS and PS2 were both great consoles, but they've really shot themselves in the foot with this one. They've screwed up plain and simple. They should have stuck with a traditional architecture for the time being, moving the Cell was a big mistake, they're simply too expensive to produce at the present time. I still see a future for cell architecture, maybe in a couple of years.

The reason they've failed is because they didn't follow the plan of the PS1 and PS2, which was: Make a simple console for everyone, that's how the PS2 got so popular, they gave it some good titles, a reasonable price, and made tons of em. Instead they went all OMG WE MUST BEAT THE 360 IN HARDWARE so they ended up with an overpriced super-computer (which is only slightly better than a 360) that costs FAR too much

Isn't Ep2 being released on the PS3?
No.

The reason Gabe has waited until now to slate the PS3 is that he's just got confirmation that there is going to be no Valve content on the PS3. Imagine him having to eat his words and praise a Valve title shipping on the PS3. Who would believe him?

I dare say he's right on this one, though. Sony failed on so many fronts, lying to customers, ignoring customers, taking a customer base for granted (expecting customers to deal with their shit and still buy sony), and this whole business with the blue diode shortage just hasn't helped matters.

I think there's still a market for the PS3, and there is still a large Playstation fanbase - although I think the days when Sony were on top have now faded away.

People are still buying the Wii and 360 more.
