Gabe Newell on PS3: "just cancel it and do a do over"

Wow, 17 pages of almost entirely speculative crap! Who would have thought?? :dozey:

Look, no one really knows how far devs will be able to push the PS3 (or the 360 for that matter). PCs will always be able to trump consoles eventually even if they have to play catch-up for a short time. That's just the way it is because consoles have 1 iteration every 5 years or so and PCs are ever-improving in every facet of their tech.

Anyway, HL2 content is still coming to the PS3 so what's the concern people???

but at what cost man!!!

I hear xbox360's Fear textures are teh crappy next to pc version

/me runs away

That's not exactly true. Look at the first few PS2 games and then look at the current generation PS2 games. Some of them have vastly improved in terms of graphical quality. The biggest problem is, how far will you be able to push the PS3 in terms of graphical quality if it is already being surpassed?

I can play ps2 games on my pc if I wanted to :E

The Wii is forcing developers to push the hardware at hand and to use a artistic direction much like Okami on the PS2.

Yeah, just like Oblivion not running quite so well as on a halfway capable PC. Damn these ports!! Really showing off how "capable" these next-gen systems really are...:hmph:

Music to my ears. That's one of the reasons the DS is my favorite platform right now. :afro:

meh oblivion runs on my 7800gt with all the bells and whistles ..as for the port problems I can always download mods that make the game more pc friendly ..cant say the same for the 360 version

Not to mention the fact that the development costs are a small fraction of what they are on other systems. Hopefully this means more development companies making more games using more creativity with a more innovative method of interactivity.

They really should open up development to the indie scene.

Exactly. It runs like butter on my x800xt pe and the mods have made it the game it should've been when it released. The consoles can be great for some things, but they'll never be equal to a PC or, even better, a Mac Pro. :p

ok for a second I thought you were disagreeing with me :)

oh and try not mention the word "mac" lest the ignoramuses descend like flies on shit

hey core ...how many pc games play on ps2?

838753 people seem to think it works

http://www.pcsx2.net/downloads.php

from wikipedia:

Performance before 2006 was between 2 to 15 FPS (frames per second) depending on the game, PC hardware, and plugin configuration, with the PS2 BIOS itself being one of the fastest pieces of software to emulate. Since release 0.9 in April 2006, performance has greatly increased. Most 2D games and menus can reach 60-120 FPS, though ingame 3D is still slow in many cases. In this release, PCSX2 also began supporting dual core CPUs, resulting in an effective doubling of FPS on systems with dual core processors. As of July 2006, the fastest dual-core CPUs can run popular 3D games, such as Final Fantasy X, at over 60 frames per second. The developers claim that Final Fantasy X is fully playable to completion with the latest version 0.9.2. PCSX2 remains under active development.

Um Stern ... do you play PS2 games on PC? Because I doubt it works very well.

Not to mention the cost of a rig that could accomplish that is silly, especially considering that a PS2 is like <$150 now.

of course not it's mostly made by fans, why would it work as well as the original? and no I dont play ps2 games on my pc because I have no desire to ..but the possibility is still there ..how many pc emulators are there for the ps3?

that's besides the point and no it would take a monster rig as you can buy a dual core cpu for under $200 ..which again wouldnt be a waste because there's more to do on a pc than just play emulated ps2 games

btw I had a lot more points than just the ps2 emulation bit you replied to

We were basically saying the same thing, wasn't really worth it to keep it going. As far as I understood we ended on agreeing that while consoles allow you to play games cheaper they don't offer the the same versatility and you can't upgrade them. The only place where we differ is that I'd rather spend less money and keep getting new games hassle free for years, even if the graphics stop being as good after a couple years.

As far as emulation, you would need a lot more than a $200 dual core CPU to keep the thing running. And even then, on the best specs possible, it would play like shit. Hell, N64 games still have problems, they've only become playable relatively recently. And yeah, as I said before - the PS3 runs Linux. So yes, you can run whatever emulators are available for Linux on the PS3, and as time passes the code will be more and more optimized.

Right now the PS3 Linux scene isn't doing much. You can't access the RSX graphics chip so don't expect any new drivers or future game support until they manage to get to the RSX.

They can create an XBMC type setup though, which would be cool.

In fact, it runs Linux so well you can crack the Blu-ray codes with it! :D

Here's my opinion. Screw the wii and it's cute, happy, homosexual idiocy.

Wii is a friggin' gimmick. There is no motion control. Essentially it's a glorified nintendo blaster. You can somewhat point with it and flick it to get a reaction. There's the key to the new addition. It has an accelerometer. Wow. But guess what? You barely control anything. Sometimes certain directions you wave the dildo in make something move in a similar manner, but it's pretty much horse shit. Tennis game? No thanks. I love tennis games, but the wii version is the worst game I have ever played in my whole life. This includes trespasser. You can swing in absolutely any direction you want and you will crack that f-cking tennis ball perfectly. Every time. Nintendo wants to bring in a customer base that is not comprised of gamers? What the f-ck are they talking about? It's not as open ended as they think. Games rely on a repetition of actions to get a reaction. It's no different, other than this forced motion bullshit that doesn't even work. You could play any of those games without the dildo movement. ANY OF THEM.

As for the 360, it's pretty awesome. I just hate that you have to pay for Live. That is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion.

And the ps3, well what can I say? Whoever said a few pages ago about no one having HD equipment, well it's going to be the standard pretty soon, so pipe down. Each night my room mate and I sit down and play the ps3 on a 1080p projector at about 140 inches. I've also played the 360 on this setup and it's nice, but the ps3 has something extra. The free online aspect of ps3 destroys Live in my opinion. The games out right now aren't so great, but this will be an awesome year for ps3.

It seems like you have played one game on the Wii for ten minutes and made a conclusion on the whole system.

I expect a hard-mod around this sometime in the future. Even so if you want accelerated graphics learn to program for Celln(I'd expect a community SDK eventually) and run your progs via the XMB. Sony keep trying with new protection methods (Think PSP updates) but it seems they've given up somewhat with the PS3.

He ( Glo-Boy) does have a point though, we are not Nintendo's target audience, non gamers are. So most likely a lot of games designed for the system are not going to appeal to people like me.

Thats if gamers don't want to play non games and I think a lot of them do.

That point, besides being the only valid point he made, is only partially correct. Yes, the Wii has games like WarioWare and Wii Play, but it also has games like Metroid Prime, Super Smash Bros., and Zelda, that tend to appeal to people who are already gamers. Argue all you want, but those are triple-A titles and system sellers, and are (or probably will be) just as good as the flagship titles on the PS3 and 360.

The Wii attracts most people; gamers and non-gamers. My Dad, who is 63, keeps reminding me to bring down my Wii to play when I have visitation with him. A man who has never touched a video game before, aside from a little of me forcing him to play with me when I was younger, now wants to play. He praises it as he bowls, punches, and whacks his way to victory. To me, the Wii is a relaxation tool. If I wanted something really engaging, I'd sit down at my computer and play someone engaging. The Wii is the ultimate party console. The immense fun you feel when you're flailing your arms around in front of three other people doing the same thing is astounding.

That's a problem with the Wii not enough blood and death to sate my appetite for... hmm probably shouldn't go there.

Meh catering to a larger audience (debatable) is smarter business wise.

Here's the problem though. It sucks unbelievable amounts of ass to have to stand up and walk over to the TV when it's your turn. Especially when you're high or drunk. But I tend to get high quite a bit and drunk occasionally when I play video games, so perhaps this is why I choose to never play the wii again.

Oh, and to the guy who just posted recently about the violence, I agree completely. Nothing says extra awesome to me more than horrifying violent goodness. I'm not being sarcastic either. Give me soldier of fortune over any in depth, well thought out, articulated RPG ANY day. Killing makes games 100% rad. Hell, if there was a Wii sword fighting game where you actually controlled the sword and you could shop heads off and impale people in the face, I'd buy the system in a second.

Right, so the wii sucks because:

-You're always drunk.
-You enjoy decapitation sims (of which there exist maybe three in the world).

Well shit, get that miyamoto guy on the phone because we've got a game plan for success right in here!
I've only played it for a few hours, but come on.

Here's my opinion. Screw the wii and it's cute, happy, homosexual idiocy.

Haha, yeah you're so hardcore with your chainsaw bayonets, prostitute killing and dismemberment... it's obvious that a game has to be rated M15+ or above to be fun and mature these days.

Yeah I suppose it is, but it's an incredibly fun gimmick. Then again I could compare the Wii-mote to the Sixaxis in terms of gimmickyness.

Glo-Boy said:

Elebits.

Analog sticks are a gimmick.
See? I can do it too.
Controlling virtual characters in a virtual world - the entire video games industry - is a freaking gimmick.

because you're prone to spastic movements and often hurt yourself? because you have no self control which leads you to take substances to the point where you're unable to perform even mundane tasks such as flicking your wrist? I think you have bigger problems than hating the wii

everything you could possibly ever say in this forum for here on in is nullified by the above idiotic comments ..you must not be much of a gamer if that's all you play

Controversy time!
How can a games console be homosexual? It has no sexuality as far as I know unless yours is special and makes conscoiuess sexual discisions. The last time I used homosexual (or gay or les or whatever) as an offence was when I was 12.

This thread just won't die.
