I am on the third book, I have brought this up to my friends, and no one else seemed to care or notice-
One of my favorite subtle things in the book is when Jaime talks briefly with a young boy who is using a crossbow. Jaime hates archers, and tells the boy a crossbow is a weapon for the weak. He tells the boy he should learn some melee weapon.
When I read that part I thought that was so excellent, because Joffery only uses a Crossbow. I thought it was a great and subtle way to show contrast between father and son without having to pair the two characters in conversation with one another.
