Bioshock
9/10
Rather good game, even if it does only one thing good: Rapture. The story's not fabulous, the gameplay is sorta meh, it has awful stability and the graphics are kinda outdated today. But Rapture, man, Rapture...

Gotta play the bunch of games I bought during Christmas sales now.

I don't think you should include how the graphics of a three year old game measure up to today's standards in a review. It should be compared to games from it's own time.

I think that's what he did.

Anyway, I question the stability part. I've never had Bioshock crash on me. (PC)

Sure, it's no System Shock 2, but if you compare every game to System Shock 2, you will never have any fun ever.

I think Bioshock stands quite outside of System Shock 2 in how dire it is; there need be no comparison.

Nooo!

Say what you will about the System Shock 2, just leave Bioshock out of it!

The quality may differ (greatly depending who you talk to) but System Shock 2 is the archetype upon which BioShock is based, hence the constant comparison between the two.

I stopped halfway through Bioshock, in how boring it is and it has zero replay value. Infact, Gamestop wouldn't give me shit back in selling it even though the game was practically new.

On a side note:

Modern Warfare 2 - 7/10

The best part of the game (multiplayer) fails to be as good as MW1, and in this one everybody is a camper, ninja and a sniper. The perks make this a hard game to play, and to top it off the guns are worse than MW1 and maybe the only good guns (FN2000, AK-47, M14, M16, etc.) are later on? I have yet to see a small map like Shipment in MW1 to make everyone stop camping and being a ninja. Thanks to what MW has been reduced to, my K/D ratio is being destroyed to a pedestrian 0.79 K/D ratio. The single player seems rather boring, but COD's SP has always been boring.

ITT Bioshock is the new Halo: it cannot be mentioned without, at minimum, eight people commenting on how awful it was, regardless of whether or not anyone was claiming to the contrary.

FYI you're pretty bad.

Get used to the game and you'll find ways to counter pretty much anything people throw at you. You'll die more often than MW1 because everyone is so much more powerful now, with new perks and deadly killstreaks, but you get into the swing of it after a while.

Also, the M4 w/ stopping power is your best friend for the first 30 ranks or so, there's no M14 (you mean the FAL?), and the map shipment has been reskinned and copied over as "Rust." You just don't see it pop up in the rotation much because, well... idunno. It's a piece of shit anyway, god I hate that map.

Burnout Paradise - 6/10
Enjoyable, but inferior to the previous, non-open world games in so, so many ways. Also, I know the crashes are pretty, but why the **** is there no way to disable the crash cam, as there has been in every other game? And that DJ Douchebag guy? This game is a little bit too into itself if you ask me.

I thought Paradise was great fun, but it sorely lacked a Quick Travel option, or at least a "retry" option.

Also, I died a little inside when I found out the crash mode had been redone. IMO it was phenominal in Burnout 3 and Revenge.

Well, I wouldn't say that. I'd say I'm an an average player, but not much more than that, but whatever.

I think if I got the game when everyone else was around rank 1 and prestige 0, it would've been easier. I use to run around the map and kill anything that moves, thats the style I've always used even in hardcore in MW1. At the moment I haven't been able to stay positive (more kills than deaths), although slowly I've been getting closer to it.

Also, the M4 w/ stopping power is your best friend for the first 30 ranks or so, there's no M14 (you mean the FAL?)

I always use stopping power, but just a day ago I've been playing hardcore so its pretty pointless. The gun I've been using is the SCAR-H because of the power, and btw the M4 used to be my gun of choice in MW1 so I'll try it again in hardcore (in regular it seems rather weak even with stopping power)

and the map shipment has been reskinned and copied over as "Rust." You just don't see it pop up in the rotation much because, well... idunno. It's a piece of shit anyway, god I hate that map.

I love that map! The reason I like that map is because its small and it forces everyone to not camp and/or not snipe, just run around with an AK-47 with red dot sight, UAV jammer, last stand and frags everywhere.

I thought Paradise was great fun, but it sorely lacked a Quick Travel option, or at least a "retry" option.
The version I played had one, but maybe that's just an update they chucked in at some point. It was also super handy because you could restart the race even after you'd already finished/won it, so you never had to drive back to the city if a race finished in the mountains. :3

I agree with you in essence, but actually **** CRASH MODE IN BURNOUT 3. It was fun until I went for 100%, then jesus christ oh god are you serious I TOTALLY HIT THAT CAR YOU ASSF*CK GAME I'M GOING TO RAPE YOUR PARENTS AND FEED THEM TO YOUR DOG I HOPE YOU BLEED TO DEATH THROUGH YOUR URETHRA.

Edit: Whoa double postan. Didn't even realise these were going into the same thread. :V

Heh, no offense about the bad thing, just trollin'. (1.2+ K/D ratio, whatup )

The level variance between players is a LOT more noticeable than MW1 because, for one thing, practically everyone is actually doing prestige now that it's useful and not just... well, a prestige thing. I very, very rarely see any level 70s, and practically never without at least prestige one. Kind of a ball-buster (also, a blessing) that the AK is a lvl 70 weapon now, since it seems like a really nice all-rounder, and one of the few rifles that doesn't seem to lose all of it's punch with a silencer.

The M4 doesn't have a lot of kick, but it's a decent placeholder until you get the ACR, easily the most reliable rifle. Awful iron sight, but chuck a red dot/holographic on that baby and say byebye to recoil. You can practically fire an entire clip into someone across the map and stay on target, it's great.

Still trying to find a practical use for the F2000, that thing chews through a 30-shot clip in 3 seconds flat. Then again I could always silence it and pretend to be Sam Fisher. :D

Dead Space - 9/10

Well ***k me. I had this for the 360 a few years back and didnt really give it a chance of a full play-through. I think I played a few hours and moved on to a big-release, trading it in.

What a mistake.

Got it for the PS3 now, and got round to starting it again last night. Im trying to go through on medium difficulty and getting the one-gun achievement, where you only use the plasma cutter (aka pistol). Its one of my favourite trophies ever so far, I kind of like only using one gun. Which is apparently the best in the game anyway.

I dont think Ive ever been so scared in my life when playing a game. The sound in this game just destroys my nerves. Visually yeah its kinda messed up, what with the blood everywhere, messages written in blood, little scribbles on the wall in black pen that make no sense, the gore, dismemberment, the creatures look seriously disturbing; I love all that, but its the sound that is amazing in this game...I think Ive had two heart-attacks in 1 hour of playing.

No spoilers here;

Theres a scene where you get introduced to the little rat things that run along the walls and have the 3 tentacles that come up from their backs. Later, you go up a lift and you see one infront of you, nice and easy kill as its at the end of a walkway. Thats cool, walk forward, gun up (this is pretty much the ONLY game Ive ever played where I truly justified the need to have my gun up ready to fire almost the whole time), and suddenly theres a loud smash of glass of a shelf about 3 ft on my right and one flies out, tentacles first, screaming at me as it does it.
I swear, I almost fell out of my chair. How I reacted quick enough to get out of its way I'll never know. I pumped it full of about 10 rounds in sheer horror and surprise.

But the one that nearly killed me; Act 4 (I think?), you go down in a lift. So these are moments when you relax and recompose yourself, calm down etc; if youre like me and get fairly scared when youre being chased by something or generally have a hightened fear when watching or playing horror genres.

But ohhhh no. EA are evil. Im sat there, headphones in, calming down, when suddenly this ear-piercing scream from a woman comes out of nowhere, seriously loud against the sound of the lift going down. This time, I sprang backward in my chair in surprise, dropped the controller, shouted '***k!' in the process and my headphones got yanked out half way down the cable (theres a line-in connection along the cable). My housemate knocked on the door and asked if everything was alright. I could barely respond. I had goosebumps, hand on my chest, just petrified. Something so simple as a scripted scream, never knew it could have such an effect.

Its like a drug though, I cant stop playing! For some reason I love it.

Ah, I had the 360 version way back when it first came out. They probably added that as a new feature (wisely).

Also I never went for perfect in Burnout 3, but in Takedown getting the Gold in each Crash was difficult, but definately doable. Way better than the stupid "bounce your car in the air for as long as you can!" Showtime mode.

Burnout 3 (Takedown) and 4 (Revenge) are absolutely amazing, but yeah, I didn't like Paradise either.

It really is the best Survival Horror game to come in years, just hope the sequel is as good.

Mass Effect 2 - 9/10

I have only played through this once without a previous saved Shepard, so some of the choices made for me were not what I had experienced in the original. Though that hardly seemed to matter as I was drawn into the best sci-fi game I think I have ever played.
I have seen people pissed off at the simplified inventory system that the second game employs, but after now starting the first game again it's clear how much easier the new system is. I got sick of having to constantly bring up my inventory screen in the original to check the stats on the fourth assault rifle I have picked up in 2 minutes of play, whereas the sequel handles this perfectly by limiting you to only being able to change weapons at the start of the mission and having every upgrade or new weapon you pick up different enough from the others to warrant the time spent deciding what to take with you.
The removal of the Mako is a big improvement in my book. The boredom of driving around an environment that was clearly not designed very well for the players method of transport and then finally getting the same base you've fought through maybe 20 times already got very dull. It is replaced instead with the planet scanning mini game, which although can still get monotonous, the fact that it's directly on your Galaxy Map and requires no loading and can be exited from straight away means that it is so much better designed as a way to find side mission than the originals Mako missions.
The graphics are a noticeable improvement on the original to the point where some of the planets have truly beautiful vistas and backdrops.
The writing and story is where this game is best though with some of the dialogue being sheer brilliance, such as Jokers relationship with EDI, or the Solarian scientist you encounter in the game. I won't say too much about the story other than the fact that it continues what the first game started perfectly while setting up the third game, all the while managing to avoid that typical "setting up the next part" feel you so often get from the middle of a trilogy.
As for the PC version I have discovered no game breaking bugs or had any crashing, and it runs at a constant 60fps on my Phenom II and GTX280.

It's hardly surprising to see why it's getting so much acclaim. Now to finish the first one again so i can play through ME2 with different outcomes :).

Videos from the first mission *SPOILERS*:-

Aliens vs Predator Classic 2000

This game is the shit.

It's fast - incredibly, disorientatingly fast. I've been watching videos of the upcoming sequel and the aliens in Part 3 move the same speed as the marines in this. It's terrifying and hilarious. Everything is on fast forward towards instant splattery death. But what's really interesting is how simple the game is. Three races, a few evocative weapons and some dark, angular maps. There isn't a huge amount of complexity to it, and yet it's incredibly addictive. This is pre-Half-Life stuff as well, without much in the way of story or set-pieces. In the marine campaign (I haven't played the others) an FMV marine captain with terrible voice acting provides the barest of excuses for an old-school maze of corridors and switches. Somhow this actually seems very fresh. The levels have a few alternate roots and the aliens respawn randomly and roam around to try and hunt you down. So actually the game experience is of a different nature than a modern FPS - you're negotiating a space in which things might try to kill you in ways you don't anticipate.

I remember being the marine for the first time, hearing the motion detector going off, seeing about 5 dots ahead of me and just flat out bricking myself as I went round the corner. Then theyd coming crawling along the walls and cieling in the same corridor, youre just spraying away and screaming.

Yeah, good times. Good times.

Mass Effect 2 9/10

Awesome game, hands down probably my game of the year

Darkest of Days
7/10

take your time with this game and don't play it for too long, but overall kinda cool concept. guns were good, AI was weird, and frustration was almost to the max! i'd get killed without even seeing the enemy and it wasn't fun at times. some missions were sweet and others sucked, but this game could have used another few months in development. i'm just glad i got it for free!

also i beat 2 games in 1 day and I play on doing this more often

Supposedly, the sequel is supposed to be more action-oriented. So much so that they're saying it's on par with MW2. It was a real facepalm moment when I found that out.

FFS. That's what happens when people don't buy good games, they just look at what's selling and try to make their games more like that. It'll be a ****ing shame if they mess up the atmosphere of the original.

Assassin's Creed II: 8/10

Toward the end it got kind of crapalicious. But otherwise very fun and visually spectacular.

Lies and slander. Seriously though, where did you hear this?

I cant even see HOW they could make a Dead Space game more action oriented. It would just be..Mass Effect with dark corners?

If theyve done this then its a definite no-buy for me.

Dead Space gave me some of the biggest scares of my life, and I want more of the same. You cant lose the atmosphere in a sequel of a game that soaked in it.

It surely can't be true, why would they sacrifice that amazing atmosphere they created, and made one of the scariest games ever made, just so people can shoot things more. Merely thinking about that sort of design decision should be punishable by death.

How...?

Was Dead Space really that lacking for action? :|

Jericho - 5/10

Pretty average linear corridor shooter. It's kinda cool sometimes (I haven't played it THAT much though), but it's pretty average. Only payed $10 for it so I'm not really disappointed.. I would be if I payed $70 at launch though.

Brothers In Arms: Hells Highway - 8/10

Well **** me, this game is awesome. Sure the graphics seem a little outdated, but god damn does it not matter. Save OpFlashpoint, I have never played a game where staying in cover and having your squadmates near you all the time actually mattered. Theres a very good amount of action and even the cutscenes are really well done. **** Call of Duty, Ubisoft and Gearbox seem to know how to make a WWII game. Just wish they took exactly what they have, changed to the setting and time period. The teams you have with you (Assault, MG, Base Fire and Bazooka) all have soldiers that play their own role and, during cutscenes, talk to you about whats going on/storyline and makes a few pretty likeable.

Farcry 2 - 6/10

The missions blow, except maybe the weapon dealer missions, but simply driving around to outposts and getting into gunfights is damn awesome. Also, the Springfield sniper is so badass. Just a shame that, from what I've seen, the assault rifles all fire the same way.

Hour of Victory - 0/10

Maybe if it tried it would be mediocre at best. What ****ing game has a Karbiner 98K, Springfield 1903, M3 Grease Gun and M1911 .45ACP pistol all have the exact same accuracy?

Medal Of Honor: Airborne - 7/10

Only played the first mission so far, and while it isn't the best game ever, its pretty damn fun. Pretty intense jumping outta an airplane while AA guns and German rifleman are shooting at you, trying to **** up the landing and not jumping right next to an enemy. My first jump found me on a rooftop surrounded by Germans. Second jump landed right next to a German Heavy Machine gunner. Third jump finally got me in an alley way next to my teammates, running to join the rest of our platoon. Only problem is that you never really get to know any squadmates and it makes the game feel more like another YOUR THE HERO, YOU SAVED THE WORLD! game.

Try playing with only dropped guns. The rusty ones.

Adds a whole new dimension to the gameplay. You never know when a jam is going to occur, or when your pistol will explode in your hands.

I loved unjamming my AK or M4(?), whichever one it was (the one with the green-dot sight), mid firefight. Taking the perfect aim, clicking and hearing the parts get jammed, run and slide behind a rock frantically hammering reload to get the round unjammed, then getting up and unleashing hell again.

Genuinely tense moments.

I hate it. I tried to play it again, but I just... ****ing ninja jeeps keept running me over.

Hey, your buddie called, he wants you to go to the other side of the ****ing map to tell you ge got an alternetiv for your mission. When I finally reach my destination, whatever wepons I picked for the mission have long run out of ammo and im using some rusty shotgun.

My goddamn flamethrower jams about every 5 seconds and I use it when there are enemies in the brush (basically, alot). So far the enemies only have the intelligence to use either an AK, Homemade 37 or G3 so doing those gun dealer is a must to get those higher up weapons. I really want the Dragunov as I role play in the game a bit too, acting like a hunter, following and shooting gazelles.

EDIT:Rizzo, just going around and doing whatever is a ton more fun then the missions are. Try playing on like easy/casual, the drivers get dumbed down a little and wont run you over. Also, find a car.

Lies and slander. Seriously though, where did you hear this?

"I can tell you that we're a little more focused on action horror as opposed to survival horror. We just created a really beautiful sequence that we're showing internally -- we haven't showed it externally yet, but we will get it out there soon -- that I think speaks to the high voltage nature of the game," he said. "Some really strong action sequences that I think are on par with the level that we're seeing in the Modern Warfare series and with the level that we're seeing in Uncharted. Just beautiful, visual imagery and very electric action."

A real kick to the groin if you ask me. Still, I'll probably get it, just because I liked the first one so much. Hell, even when the game stopped being scary to me during my third play-through, I still loved it.

Also, Dead Space 2 might not come out on PC.
