Games that looked awesome back then, but look terrible nowadays.

Actually, Red Faction wouldn't look so bad if not for the now extremely low-poly character/object models. The environmental surface textures still look pretty good imo. :| I wonder if the PC version of Red Faction has a HDR/Hi-res mod pack? (I've only played it on PS2) That's all Red Faction would need in the way of a visual face-lift besides higher res character models. Is there a mod for that too though however?

I have always thought that the character models in the PS2 version been pretty atrocious, I was like "Wtf?" when I first saw the intro cut scene, didn't really fit the otherwise beautiful environment. The PC version did have better models, did it not? At least better textures on characters and other world objects.

that should of been alyx's "antartic" costume for ep3 :rolling:

Not sure. Google? :p

Compared to NWN2:
NWN2_007-large.jpg

I just ordered NWN2 for ?10. I've been playing the first one for a few days and it's still awesome.

Actually I think NWN has aged just fine, graphics are still nice.

But I'd add Rome Total War to the list, been playing a bit more lately and it's definitely showing its age.

Also, Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries, I thought it had revolutionary graphics back when it first came out... not so much anymore.

I only just tried NWN recently, and the graphics didn't seem too bad (although you have to appreciate the numerous upgrades it went through since).

Bored with the rest of it though.

The Wheel of Time game. Used the Unreal engine. The environment in some places (mainly indoors) still looks pretty good, but the models look like crap now.

Gameplay was excellent too.

Total Annihilation *still a good game, though...*

**** yeah!

I'm still pissed at games that come out today that can't support high resolution and widescreen when a game release in like 1997 could

lol i forgot all about WC2 graphics. . . but i dont really cringe when i see them, they're charming really.

and lol i loved TA, i just sucked at it.

X-Wing. This game took SO many hours of my life, and I ****ING LOVE IT!

Outlaws by LucasArts at the time was awsome, and still is, but it looks like piss.

Time Commando
modern.jpg

I remember when my friend and I fired up the demo for this game. We thought we were watching an FMV but suddenly we were attacked and died. Around that time we realized it was actually in-game.

Btw...best...old...game...ever.

Oh my god, I remember playing through Time Commando repeatedly for literally a year when i was young. So true, best old game ever - it had cavemen, medieval, wild west, world wars, even the future - and the gameplay was actually really fun. Remember in the future when you had a yo-yo as a weapon?

That game was SO good :D

Edit: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BhzRUGmCZoU rewatching the trailers brought back SO many memories, probably has to be in my to 3 games of all time

Mortyr was a pretty cool game. I really, really liked the graphics, and because the AI was so bad, I didn't die all the time and I was able to finish the game :D

Doom3. Though many PC gamers at the time of it's release argued it didn't look that great back when it came out even.

I wasn't fortunate enough to have a decent PC to run D3 back in 2004, or any of the 'then' great looking games, so it looked great to me when I finally got my hands on it roughly a year and a half later.

Today though, with it's low-poly character models and textures, it's starting to show some age considerably. The dynamic lighting and shadows though still looks good.

Mortyr was always crap. As for something that has genuinely gone downhill since the olden days, the only thing I remember about Mortyr was how in PCZone, Charlie Brooker included the tag-line 'Mortyr Vicar?'. That Magazine hasn't been the same since he left (and they started giving high review scores to crocks of shit like Unreal 2).

Speaking of people gasping about water graphics... Morrowind was one were everyone went apeshit over the water graphics. OMG ITS REFLECTIVE

EDIT: Although it still looks better than a lot of current games.

Like Oblivion. :|

As much as I hate to admit it, FF7 and FF8 did not age well at ALL. Even their CGs aren't very inspiring to look at anymore. Hence REMAKES ARE IN ORDER! :|

Monster Truck Madness 2 looked incredible when I got it in 1998. I remember being stunned at how it had working headlights and reflective water. The best thing was how you could go underwater and it could freeze in snowy conditions. Thinking about it now, it was really advanced for the time.

I used to love Monster Truck Madness. My favourite truck was a big green one...what was it's name? Monster Patrol?

There was Monster Patrol, with the big triangular wing on the back, and Snake Bite which had two teeth on the front grill. Probably either of those.

Hells yeah, I loved that game :D

Played it so much I broke the computer eventually. A neat thing to try was to find the train tracks, and if you accelerated or something the train would clip through you, before launching you very high into the air.

Good times :afro:

EDIT: Aye, the one you are refering to is Snakebite...

Ya, MTM2 was great fun. Used to compete with my brothers about having the best time lap on each map while hooking up the good 'ol Microsoft Steering Wheel. Good times. :D

Grand Theft Auto IV.

That game is so yesterday.

Yes, lets compare games from, what, 2005? to real world graphics. Personally, Morrowinds water is hideous compared to oblivion. I thought the game was sexy.

Battlefield 1942 is definitely beginning to show its age.

022.jpg

It's still damn fun, and imo the best game in the series... I wish they'd remake it on a newer engine along with all of the expansions already in it.

It's true that Oblivion's water is a little on the shitty side at times (depends on the lighting conditions mostly), but that's easily fixed with mods. Hell, even some INI file tweaks can make it look much better.
Oblivion's water is great out of many games I've played with water tbh. Still, I still haven't seen any game with water that matches (or even comes close to) HL2's, but I'm also probably behind the times.

The first game I've ever played with uber amazing, realistic water with reflections though, is probably Beyond Good and Evil. Now there's an amazing game with realistic water. It was on the PS2 too even. :O

Yeah. I'm confused too.

Here is a screenie I took of Oblivion a while back.

Is that what Qarl's High-Texture mod looks like? :|

Played this game before GTA III. It used to be sooo much fun. But since then I have had GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, and now GTA IV! No need for Midtown Madness games! Only ever played the first one.
