Games that looked awesome back then, but look terrible nowadays.

Holy damn Midtown Madness was awesome, it actually lagged like shit on my computer. I remember being amazed at how the newspapers flew out of the stands like that, and there was actually a cheat that spawned them behind you continuously for some reason...

Also, the street you spawn on leads up to a drawbridge that you can get massive air off... providing it happens to be up at the time. Spent hours trying to hit it at the right speed and angle to get me on top of a building on the other side... only to eventually discover it was blocked off by an invisible wall. ;(

No I don't think it is; Qarl's mod looks very good but also fairly different. It completely changes the art style of the game to something nearly photo-realistic.
Strange. That distant shot of the Cheydinhal castle wall looks much better than it does in my game. Maybe he's using some sort of, "improved distant-lod texture" mod, but not Qarl's? :|

Battlefield 1942 is definitely beginning to show its age.
*snip*

It's still damn fun, and imo the best game in the series... I wish they'd remake it on a newer engine along with all of the expansions already in it.
That games looks very playable to me (though I've never played it).

Spyro ages, regrettably.

yeah so does crash bandicoot

eww

I remember taking the legocopter up for the first time, and being able to see the entire place at once I was like "omg this is awesome!"

What relevance does the "game from 2005" part have to do with your side of the argument?

not sure if someone else has posted this one:

played that game a hell of a lot

Just thought of another: Stratosphere: Conquest of the Skies

I just wish it would work better on big monitors... they limit the resolution pretty low :p

I was real surprised when I played Wolf3d again 7-8 years after first playing it as a kid... I remember it looking way better than this:

I recently downloaded two games to the Wii's Virtual Console: Ocarina of Time and Paper Mario, both N64 games.

Ocarina of Time looks simply awful now, and the nostalgia just wasn't enough to keep me playing. Paper Mario on the other hand still looks fantastic, and I completed it and enjoyed every moment. This proves that style ultimately trumps graphical prowess in the long run. So I recommend Paper Mario to anyone with a Wii and a bit of spare cash.

Also all the old SNES games are still fun cus 2D just doesn't age. I can also still enjoy the Final Fantasy IX since the pre-rendered graphics still look beautiful to me, even though the sprites are very dated. That makes me think actually, what if Square re-released the PS1 Final Fantasy games, simply increasing the resolution on the backgrounds and using new sprites? Doesn't sound like too much work, and would be good addition to the PSN.

Ocarina of Time still kicks ass. Look at that god damn view distance!

I still play it, the graphics be damned, its such a good game.

You have to admit though, that's still looks pretty damn good for a PSone game when compared to other early PSone games of that era. :| Even better looking than the PSone FFs tbh.

Final Fantasy IX does not use sprites, but 3D character models. Sprites are 2D figures with still, pre-rendered animations, such as the enemies of the old Doom games or Paper Mario even. Yes, I do agree though. FF IX would look great if only the character models were scrapped in favor of higher detailed versions with a greater poly-count and more modern textures.

haha, I remember that game, didn't play it much

( I liked it because it had boobs in part of the intro)

Deus Ex. I'm replaying it for the thousand time, and it looks very dated, HL is older and looks better imo. Its still awesome though.

Okay i'll give you that

yuck :O

HL is older and looks better imo.

I played HL1 last year for the first time. OK, it was the Source edition, not the original one, but I have to say that I loved it despite its age. Gameplay, concept, atmosphere and music are still over the top.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, if anything it's aged really really well. It's not hard on the eyes at all and you can still feel that RA2 charm. The only down point is what Shippi mentioned, the low res does hold it back but it's drop dead gorgeous compared to some of it's 3D counterparts.

I have no problem with the graphics of any C&C game but saying RA2 aged badly is rediculous!

If anything, RA2 is HOW 2D games should age. Along with Fallout.

One of the reasons Fallout ages well (although lack of a resolution change hurts it a fair bit) is that everything in the game wasn't drawn, but rendered and then recorded into sprites. Why do you think the PAs in the intro and in-game are so similiar?

Considering how people bitched about RA2 being in 2D back at its release, I'd agree. In that sense it hasn't 'aged' at all.

Has anyone mentioned Twisted Metal 2 yet? I remember how awesome that game looked when it first came out. Still the best in the series though. Waiting for other fools to teleport to the top of the Effiel tower before proceeding to blow it to smithereens with a remote bomb never got old. In fact, it was my favorite moment in the game. I just wished that Dark Tooth was a playable character. It would have been epic to crush everyone in sight with that enormous truck. I settled for Minion though when I finally unlocked him as a playable character. My friends hated me for using him. :E

Check out those jaggies in those screenshots. (ewwww :p)
