Gears of War (X360) Discussion!

After watching Gamespot's video review and seeing it in action.

I'm even pumped for it, and I'm not planning on getting a 360 anytime soon. o_o

No good story/plot, no sale for me.

I'm sick to death of mindless shooters, no matter how good the graphics. My right arm for a little orginality.

Damn you guys! - we have to wait at least another week in the uk for this.

Has anyone tried co-op yet?

Lrn2Bioshock kthxbye.

The rest of us will be too busy having fun blasting the hell out of generic-looking aliens with generic-looking futuristic weaponry ^_^

If you want a good story or plot read a book. Video games aren't generally the best place to find them ;)

Bleh, where's UT2007? I wish ATI/nVidia would hurry up with the Direct3D 10 graphics hardware, because it's apparantly not coming out until March of next year :/.

Well, that's assuming that they developed UT2007 and GOW simultaneously, and that Epic are holding out for Direct3D 10 graphics cards to take hold, of which it's logical for them to do so.

:(

Group hug for destrukt!
Forget about hugs (Though hugs are good :naughty:) go get me a copy and send it over (Though unless it's PAL I don't think it'll work :O).

Someone suggested trying the UK Amazon store, I'll check it but for now I have to sleep.

Its already out....

I used to think that way too, but then I think about games like Contra and Rolling Thunder and Smash TV and Robotron and tons more like them and I realize that I love mindless shooters!! This one is just like those, but with slick new incredible 3D HD graphics. It does look like a whole ton of fun, but I still prefer 2D for my shooters--Contra:Shattered Soldier ftw!!

My first mistake was thinking of this as something on the level of HL2. Its not. Its a mindless shooter...but a brilliantly conceived one!!!

Seeing as HL2 bored me on the first play through i'm hoping this is nothing like it in nearly every way. Infact, the only thing I really liked about HL2 was the superb level of detail and design that went into each location, and this has been compared to GoW's destroyed world in a few reviews.

Heads shall pop! :sniper:

Warbie = backwards gamer. :p

Hey :p - better than twiddling your thumbs waiting for that fabled 'video game with a good narrative'. Makes yourself comfy, you're in for the long haul ;)

Just grabbed it, setting my alarm for impressions in 1 hour 15 min (12:30pm for me).

me too.. i really wish there would come out some original games or at least something that needs a little more thinking than BOOM HEADSHOT YAY LOOK AT THE GRAPHICS

Bioshock. Zelda. Mass Effect. Alan Wake. Too Human. Episode 2.

Well after about an hour of play I can safely say "Hardcore" difficulty is tough.

I've died like ~20 times. Chainsawing bad guys is a lot harder than I had thought. There's the prep time of revving it (about a second) and then you have to be actually at the guy prepared to rip him up. He can easily break your rev by just meleeing you (a second melee hit will kill you in Hardcore) or just hit you with a burst from his weapon).

I'm really glad it's tough and even 2-3 bad guys can be quite dangerous depending on their positioning.

Also, it's really hard to survive if you go out on your own to flank. The enemy will see you and take you down pretty quickly if you don't keep your distance.

I've had a couple issues with getting into cover. I think I just need more time though. Also, there's been one semi-large bug I've hit. The first junction where you get to choose Left or Right (not at the VERY beginning), if you go left, the first leaning pillar you see on your left can be walked right through. The first time I tried to take cover behind it but instead I dove straight through it. The 2nd time I tested to see if it was a fluke, got kinda sucked into the pillar and couldn't get out. Had to go back to my last checkpoint. I tested it a few more times and I get the same results.

So far it's a lot of fun (wish I had somebody to play coop with right now) but I'm really looking forward to getting the bow and shotgun. Gonna try MP out after I finish Act 1.

I hear this all the time, but then theres no one out there buying stuff like Ico and Okami.

Just got out of a couple hours of coop. It's really nice to have a well-made dynamic of coop in a game. Rather than just dropping 2 instead of 1 player into the game there's a few sections where one player relies on the other. Or as me and my teammate played, he had the sniper and would pick off turret guys as I went in close with the shotgun and drew fire and took out some grunts. Either I'm still in Act 1 or they just don't say "Act 2" on screen when it changes.

I am surprised at the varied environments. Level design is great as well.

A couple possible flaws - When I was making a coop game I was gonna start from the beginning with the person because I thought he was behind. When I was about to start it the game gave me a warning saying you can only have 1 checkpoint saved at a time so my progress a couple hours in would be gone. I wonder if there's a way around that. Also, my teammate was sniping and complained that sometimes hits didn't seem to get detected when the enemy was behind cover. I think they're invulnerable from some angles or something. Maybe he just sucked, I dunno.

Also, Beserkers are INTENSE and awesome to face.

EDIT: Still haven't played Versus MP. I'll try that after work some time (work at 5pm here :()

Alrighty then, well I went to gamestop today so anxiously awaiting to pick up my copy of GoW. Only to have then tell me "uhhh sorry our shipment didnt come in today come back tomorrow" fabulous!!

Just played about an hour of it in singleplayer. Only thing I have to say is: AWSOME! I put it down for the night just before I was about to face the first bezerker. This game is absolutely amazing so far, in every possible way.

This game is AMAZING.

My friend and I played Co-op, and it was honestly the best co-op experience I have ever had. I am definitely getting this game. We were unable to play multiplayer due to the fact that my friend's internet was down.

Hands-down the best new shooter I've played all year.

Is it possible to connect a mouse and keyboard to an x-box 360 and have it work properly?

Just thought I might add something here. While watching the IGN video review for Call of Duty 3. They go off track start talking about what an amazing graphical achievement GoW is. I've watched alot of video reviews and have never see this happen before, must mean something! :p

GOW looks high-def even when it's on an SDTV :D

So what about the game are you all raving about so much? The graphics? The gameplay?

The guy kind of described the gameplay as basically hiding behind cover, shooting and killing people, and moving to new cover to repeat the process.

Honestly, I wasn't too interested in the game from watching the video review at gamespot. Hmmm.

The general flow of gameplay is get to cover and shoot, but there's more to it than that, especially in coop. Sometimes cover isn't enough (bow guys, snipers, and rocket soldiers can still land killshots on you if you only have crouch cover).

Example:

You and your coop partner are split up, there is a guy on a turret, and multiple enemies in a courtyard area. You both approach this courtyard from different directions. One player will have to draw the turret's fire so the other can squeeze off a sniper shot or lob a good grenade to take out the turret so you can actually peek out to fire, move between cover and fight without dying in 2 seconds from turret fire.

Other examples would be luring a beserker to an open space so your partner can lay down the Hammer of Dawn and cook that sucker while you dodge his crazy, blind charges.

The way you maneuver as a team and actually have to use good tactics makes the game really fun.

I'd talk about it in more detail but I have to wake up in less than 7 hours :( I lost track of time.
