GOG to shut down, oh sorry it was a hoax to generate buzz

Also, Baldur's Gate? Really? Somehow I wasn't aware it was in such demand...

Baldur's Gate is a real breakthrough. It's the big title that no one would have expected to buy DRM-free on GoG.
From now on we know that nothing is impossible and we can hope for some more great games in the future, fixed to run on new OSes, tweaked, fully patched and DRM-free.

On that note, it also brings to mind the 2+ year fall of Joaquin Phoenix that was just recently announced to be faked for the "documentary" that was just released, I'm Still Here. It chronicled his retirement from acting to move on to a rap career and meltdowns on stage and on Letterman, etc. Everyone was worried for him. Now that the movie is out, the cat is out of the bag. Man, him and Casey Affleck really had everyone going. :p

Except that was far more blatantly obvious. I called it the first time I saw him doing the act.

Going to pick up Baldur's Gate. Are Postal 2 or VTM: Redemption worth it?

Postal 2 isn't worth anything.
Not sure about VTM, played a demo of it yeeeeeears ago but barely remember it.

I didn't like VTM: Redemption.

I generally think so too, but I thought they brought up a good point about them being a smaller company that had trouble getting coverage. If they straight up announced it, it wouldnt have gotten nearly as much publicity.

Besides, the way they worded it on their website simply implied things couldnt stay the way they were. Of course that has an obvious implication, but its not straight up lying.

Small company or not, if the best marketing strategy they can come up with under their budget is to lie about things and later go "lol jk bros it was a joke!" then I still don't like them. Theres better, less dicknose ways of generating buzz on the cheap.

what, "redemption" is one of the best games ever made in the history.

I noticed it is a Polish company? Can Amerikans purchase stuff from them?

Just phone them up and try an put on an accent. Anything vaguely Eastern European should do they're all interchangeable.

Downloading BG as we speak. The new site isn't up yet but the service is.

No, only Polish people can. :p

Screw you guys! I always read about services being strictly for the UK or inaccessible to whateverplace-land. (Except services provided by your mother)

Anyways, is there any other games strongly recommended from this catalog?

Outcast. The remake was recently released by GoG. Amazing game. It is set in a very believable alien world, complete with culture, religion, etc. It is one of the first free roam games and for its time it was nothing short of revolutionary. Get it if you haven't played it.

As I said, they never "lied" about closing down. They simply said things couldnt stay the way they were. Hell, even with all the people fussing and saying they were closing down, there were still some people who speculated that the service was just leaving beta.

That said, I can still see why people would be mad at them for doing this, and there probably couldve been an equally effective marketing strategy out there. However to say that they lied to their customers is wrong.

The remake, are you referring to the mod created using the crysis engine?

It is the original game. Remake in the sense you couldn't run it on XP, Vista, etc. They had to put a lot of work into it to make it playable on modern PCs.

I just went on the site for the first time and I think the collection has some timeless classics. I was a bit depressed when I didn't see Homeworld in the catalogue.

Is the site legit and fully sanctioned by the various developers/publishers

I am confused. So I downloaded Baldurs Gate, then I opened the setup... it finished scanning for compatibility, and then nothing happens.

Is there something I am missing here? Do I have to look for it in my program files?

Maybe this? It took a very long time for me, about 4 or 5 minutes.

Since you're using Windows Vista you need to know, that the UAC (User Account Control) scan might cause the GOG.com installer to launch with slight delay (up to few minutes). Larger files will "generate" longer delay.

My problem is that I can't seem to get a download that isn't corrupted. I have tried skipping the check, but then the installation fails because of a missing file. Went through all the steps in their troubleshooting Q&A but that didn't fix the problem. I would use their downloader, but that is having troubles of its own. Launch day troubles probably.

EDIT And now the site has seem to have crashed. Scheduled maintenance wtf?

You're right, it took about 5-10 minutes later for the install to appear.

This and the System Shock / Ultima Underworld games are digital distribution's worst omissions. Games like Baldur's Gate get reissued all the time, but these... must be some shitty rights issue.

More like

"Hey Richard Garriott, can we distribute the Ultima franchise on our digital platform?"

"Nope lol brb gotta jizz in space"

So has anyone tried any mods for GOG's Baldur's Gate yet? Widescreen in particular?

System Shock and Ultima series missing is explained very easily, they are both owned by Electronic Arts, and as far as I know EA has no games on GOG.

Not all publishers are happy to have their games on a DRM-free digital platform. Electronic Arts is one of them, I think.

Precisely, I should have elaborated, I realized that after I made the post but I couldn't be arsed on account of being a lazy git.

I'm complaining about Digital Distribution as a whole though, not just GOG, which isn't the only viable platform for these titles. Especially System Shock 2 which PC gamers have never been able to shut up about.

It's more of a tactical RPG on the lines of Baldur's Gate.
Very linear too.

Eh. They could have done it so much better. Seemed like a cheap move.

Very linear too.
Um, yeah, but with THE BEST-WRITTEN STORY in videogame history. So linear? Who the **** cares? It is one of the best gaming experience I have ever had and likely ever will have. GOG is pulling out all the stops and I am loving it!!!

Pretty sure Lucid was talking about Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption. Unless you feel it has the best written story ever.

PST on GOG is the best news ever. All I ever wanted.

It's also very playable with the widescreen mod, fix packs etc.

I wish there were more games with truly awesome stories out there like The Longest Journey, PS:T etc, especially since I am terrible at reading books but have no problems getting through games.

They have that game on here that has a story done by writer Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Planetary, etc) called Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising.

Anyone play it?

He's also responsible for the story in Dead Space.

So he's a highly overrated human being.

GOG has Amerzone, Syberia 1 & 2, three wonderful adventure games by Benoit Sokal.

EDIT: Ok, Amerzone is sort of an early work by Sokal. Not as good as Syberia.

EDIT 2: Syberia 3 is in the works!
