GOG to shut down, oh sorry it was a hoax to generate buzz

Pretty sure Lucid was talking about Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption. Unless you feel it has the best written story ever.

Yeah, I was.
Chill bro, I have respect for PST since I have played a bit of it.

GOG has Amerzone, Syberia 1 & 2, three wonderful adventure games by Benoit Sokal.

EDIT: Ok, Amerzone is sort of an early work by Sokal. Not as good as Syberia.

EDIT 2: Syberia 3 is in the works!

Well, just to clarify, I hated The Longest Journey from the perspective of being a game, I detest point-and-click adventure games.

My preferred adventure games from a gameplay perspective are for example the Shenmue series and Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy.

It took real effort and will-power for my AD(H)D self to play through The Longest Journey, and it's not something I ever see myself doing again.

Point-and-click adventure games really, REALLY aren't my genre, so I doubt I will check out the games you mentioned, except maybe I might look at walkthroughs/LPs of them on YouTube.

Also, ZT, I've never played Hostile Waters myself but have read reviews of it etc, it seems like a great game, sadly, RTS isn't really my genre, but yeah, I've been told it's a great and unique little title.

yep plus the backstory behind the marker, unitology etc wasnt really fleshed out enough either

It was in the new novel that came out, I've only read summary of the story in it though, since I'm not much of a book-reader.

But it does explain the Marker(The real one, not the 'reverse-engineered' one found in the game.), how the Church of Unitology came to be etc.

the backstory behind unitology
[strike]scient[/strike]ology
Ok, not literally. But there were some none-too-subtle parallels that could have been, but weren't interesting.

Backstory for the marker is doubtless somewhere else, but at any rate, I'd have gladly sat through a seminar about its origins if they promised to remove the chapter where you have to babysit it.

yea that thing pissed me off immensely now that you've mentioned it. They hardly explain the marker that well in all honesty and then they bring up this convuluted mess where its a 'fake' marker and not the real one and so it has different effects and such.

It just drove me mad as to how much was left on the table

*highfive*:p i completely agree!

suck it haters i thought fahreheit was more fun than monkey island

PS: in case no one has noticed Planescape torment is now on gog!! I need to try out this apparent classic :D

Oh noes, they kept the marker and religious cult mysterious, why wont they just tell me everything overtly in the game? Why wont it just think for me???

made mysterious deliberately or through shitty writing? I'm going for the latter >_>

and all they're doing now is filling the gaps with ****ing books to sell like the halo series has done

Hey guys Half-Life has a fantastic story because of how fleshed-out and explanatory it is.

:)

Half-Life story is enjoyable and does its work, but it's not on par with a (good) novel. An evil extradimensional empire invades Earth, an unexpected hero leads a revoution... maybe a cheap sci-fi movie.
For a deep and original story in a shooter I will look at Bioshock.

OH GOD YES!

Anyway, any general tips for my first Baldur's Gate playthrough?

There's no "revolution" in Half-Life. Mayhaps you are thinking of the sequel? Also good work missing his point.

Djees I'd actually recommend you get BG2 with expansion as well and get one of the mods which let you play BG1 on the BG2 engine (BG TuTu or BG Trilogy).

I wish BG was solo-friendly because I hate managing retarded party-members, always have.

Except in games that are turn-based and uses hexes etc(like say the Gold Box DnD games or Arcanum)

I left party AI off my entire playthrough. Went just fine.

You can do solo playthroughs. I did a solo Thief run of BG2 + ToB once. I even did Watcher's Keep, Kangaxx etc. though I had to cheese a bit for some of them.

^^Perhaps you actually enjoy ordering every single member of your party exactly what to do, I don't, at least not in the real-time pausable environment.

^What does cheese a bit mean?:p

^What does cheese a bit mean?:p

Heh, cheesy tactics. Like occasional use of scrolls of Protection from Undead/Magic, thief trap spam, boots of speed re-stealth re-backstab kiting, etc.
It's doable and all within game-rules, but to do it all with only one character you need to use some 'cheap' tactics. And the only classes you can possibly do it with are Thief or Sorceror/Mage.

^^I see, these days I'm not really into the whole idea of fantasy worlds with magic scrolls etc, I guess that's part of the reason why I haven't found the motivation to play through the BG series even though I own them legally via retail collections, as well as the IWD series. Which is a shame, because I've heard they have very well written stories(The BG series anyway.) Same goes for NWN2 too, owned that since it released but never gotten around to actually finishing it.

^I can barely hear what they say in that vid.

The entire point of the game is micro managing your party members.

Then it should have been turn-based, like the Gold Box games!*Rages*

It's only pseudo-real-time. You can essentially make it turn based by turning on various autopause settings in options.

It doesn't essentially make it turn-based, since both the enemy and yourselves actually move and carry out your actions at the same time in real-time when you unpause.

Turn based with simultaneous turns is still a form of turn based ;)

Yes, but Baldur's Gate isn't WEGO(The opposite of the more common IGOUGO) so it isn't relevant.

WEGO games have a clear turn-based structure where you give the order, then you can do nothing to change it when the turn plays out, nor can you "pause" the turn to issue new orders.

So GOG has this now:

256px-Icewind_dale_1_box_shot.jpg

Icewind Dale is one of the best-known role-playing games out there. It is often compared to Baldur's Gate, since both games use the same engine the same mechanics and are set in the Forgotten Realms universe. Today's release a lot more combat-oriented, but that doesn't mean you won't find a compelling story and an abundance of quests here as well. A very cool feature (powergamers rejoice!) is that you can, and should, create an entire party before you start your journey - stats, skills, portraits, descriptions, alignments, everything. Overall, a fantastic cRPG, complete with two expansion packs - Heart of Winter and Trials of The Luremaster.

I can't believe that BG, PT, and ID are available for sale in such easy-to-use and awesomely-added-on packs full of insane extras in 2010. Good times.

IE games being released in the order they were released back then... well, that's nice.

Having an amazing time playing through Planescape: Torment(Which I bought from GOG).

To the point that I am actually considering trying again to beat the BG series, will probably make a thread about that when I do though, to get some advice on mods etc from you guys.

I believe tutu is pretty much all you need.

I played through it vanilla myself :p

Nice post, Tav. Was just going to if no one had. I am downloading now. :) A most excellent choice releasing this gem.

Damnit GOG; another game I've always been wanting to play, especially since I love Troika's RPGs generally.

So little time though.

Especially what with F:NV around the corner for RPG-goodness.:(

^Are all these part of the same universe or are they just similar games?

All the ones in that image are set in a D&D campaign setting, yes.

Planescape is set in, well, the planescape(Which actually links a ton of other D&D campaign settings together via a multiverse sorta thing, where Planescape is the center from which you can travel to several other "planes."

In case you are interested in the setting, you can read more here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planescape#Cosmology

I really love Planescape: Torment, setting-wise, writing-wise etc.

Can't speak much for the other games, I own all of the IWD and BG games, but never had time to get into and play through them.

Actually have Planescape: Torment temporarily on hold since I'm playing through F3 in preparation for F:NV next week.

Baldurs' Gate 2 is a foregone conclusion and it's barely a stretch to suggest that Neverwinter Nights would be one of the others. Any ideas on the last one? I suppose there's a Neverwinter Nights 2...
