imo this is the 'big one', both games being examples of the best the first person shooter genre has to offer \o/

Just what you got out the box pls guys (no CS or TFC)

I'm sure the poll will be pretty one sided (this is a HL2 forum) but my vote goes to Golden Eye, by a nose.

I pick Half Life. It has better AI and better over all game play. I also like HL multiplayer a lot more. Golden Eye was good but not as good as Half Life.

Could you give us more details on Golden Eye?

website or something?

Oh my... someone get this kid some help! He has never played Golden Eye!

You had to play Goldeneye on a controller. That completely ruins the excellence factor.

for goldeneye being a CONSOLE fps i think its great. If you compare HL on a console to goldeneye GoldenEye stomps it.

Well, I think I might have but I wanted to be sure I was thinking of the same game. ;)

I've played a couple different James Bond games on consoles and they get mixed up.

The control scheme for Goldeneye is what, in part, made the game. It would have been mediocre, at best, on the PC.

Oh and, Goldeneye :)

Why even post such a poll? You know which game will rake in most of the votes. And also considering this is a Half-Life/Half-Life 2 fan site.

To have not heard of Golden Eye has to be some kind of video gaming crime!

imo no other game (with the possible exception of Perfect Dark) can match the fighting, weapons, levels and challenge that Golden Eye offers.

As for immersion, that's a toughy. If there's one area that HL excells, it's here. However, I'd argue that Golden Eye still has the edge. All GE had to do was to make you feel like James Bond - and it achieved this with room to spare! Never before have I felt such an affinity with a game character. I was James Bond :)

The story in HL was better though.

I'm afraid I'll have to say they're imcomparable. First off, the fact that they're on different consoles separate them too much. Different generation, gameplay, legacy, etc. But IF we are to compare by the "experience" playing the two games at that time, then I'll have to say Half-Life.

Goldeneye was one of the games I wish would never end.. even so, after the 20 some odd levels, going back and playing through them on all the difficulties, working to get the cheats, then playing with the cheats.. it felt like a new/fresh experience each and every time.

Oh man, good times playing that game.. good times

I know - it's still a worthwhile thread imo.

No matter how much ppl dislike consoles, or controlling a FPS with a joypad, Golden Eye continues to rub salt in the eyes of die hard pc fans by putting many recent titles (like Far Cry) to absolute shame.

//edit - what about mulitplayer? Surely noone can compare HL to Golden Eye in this area.

I thought you were FOR Golden Eye.

(or am I just misinterpreting?)

imagine playing GE with a mouse! ergh *shudders at the thought*

A joypad was perfect for Golden Eye - and imo recreated the feeling of controlling a fire arm better than a mouse can ever hope to. (it just took practise and skill to be deadly accurate. Unlike with a mouse - which is pretty damn easy :p)

I don't think they understand Shuzer /o\

personally, i voted for golden eye. ive had a ton of fun with goldeneye while i basically just have halflife for the mods.

but umm the public kind of already voted on http://www.gamespy.com and half life won game of all time

Half-Life.

I love Goldeneye and all the secret missions and cheats you can unlock, but i just had more fun playing Half-Life and blowing up grunts, or being blown up by them

What do the public know?? :) They're the ones who buy every version of Fifa and keep the Sims top of the charts.

Clearly. :(
I think one of the better things about FPS on a controller (and one of the ONLY things) is rumbling. In fact, I think that's in part what made Goldeneye feel so immersive. The N64's rumble pak was better than any built-in rumbling in systems these days. I never even notice it in modern games, but it's one of the things I remember feeling so.. right, in Goldeneye

Of course, there were just so many things that made Goldeneye so very good.. it's hard to narrow it down, but rumbling definitely added an immersion I don't feel in games very often

I think most people pick HL because of the MODS if it was just HL vs goldeneye games alone..then goldeneye wins handsdown.

I had more fun experiences with friends playing Goldeneye. But Half-Life isn't too far behind.

Definitely Goldeneye... I don't really like Half-Life.

I was never a big fan of Goldeneye. In fact I never even finished it, and my firends and I would ALWAYS play Smash Bros. ahead of it for multiplayer fun.

Hmmm... I always considered GoldenEye as a game on par with Duke3d. Fun, had lots of neat stuff, offered a nice change from the norm and was ahead of its time. I just don't see it as a revolutionary game like HL was.

F*ck yeah. Best multiplayer game on the N64 EVER

I remember playing the multiplayer of Golden Eye at my friends house, and I was getting owned every time.

But I don't see why Golden Eye is considered to be so good, Half-Life is much better. One thing Golden Eye has over Half-Life are the awesome (or fun) weapons, and the option to go akimbo! (for those of you who are not familiar with Matrix Quake, hehe, akimbo=two weapons at the same time). And the Golden Gun is t3h greatest!

The story in Golden Eye isn't nothing really special like Half-Life's. Golden Eye is good, and really entertaining, but Half-Life just had a bigger impact on me.

Golden Eye is only seen as being good because it was one of the few half decent FPSers on a console.

The same thing goes for Halo.

They are both mediocre games but the fact that they are on consoles makes idiots cream their pants.

That's complete rubbish :p

Golden Eye is arguably as good as any pc shooter imo (hence this thread) I'm not a console fan boy, just a first person shooter fan - having played virtually every fps to come out on any system (including the pc)

If you want medicre shooters try COD, MOHaa, JK series etc etc. These can only appear as quality titles if they compare well against games you've experienced before (i.e other average shooters)

(I actually prefer Perfect Dark too Mechagodzilla ........ god knows how long I spent on the shooting range earning every weapon :) That alone was more fun than most recent shooters :/)

OMFG are you borderline retarded? THIS IS A WHAT BOARD?

HALF-LIFE BOARD

Take a guess what will win

Easy tiger :/

Of course the poll will be one sided (as mentioned in the first post).

It's still a valid thread imo - if there was ever a game that could come close to HL on a HL forum it'd be Golden Eye.

Only one person here comes across as looking like a retard :p

Personally, I think too many people here are blinded by their blind loyalism to HL.. :( Oh well

And Seppo, regarding HL vs Goldeneye's storyline.. HL's storyline was nothing special. It was really basic, infact. HL's storyline isn't what really made it great
On the flip side, GE was based on the movie, and that was by no means great either

my vote goes with goldeneye. it was the first fps i had ever played, and is still awesome. i pwned at GE MP :p.

i think in the long run i've played hl for longer, but not the game itself, only its mods.

infact, call me what you like, but when i first played the dam level, i was doing great untill i got upto the switch on the truck door thing. i juts kept shooting it etc. of course that's before i found out there was an 'action' button

Goldeneye was the kind of game that got old in no time, but after about a week you wanted to play it again. But then again HL has mass amounts of MP and mods that GE can never touch. And the mods and stuff definately ARE hl, so you cant take that stuff out to even the odds, thats like taking the prox mines outa GE, that was most of the fun.

I dunno - we're not comparing the engines. Counter Strike is not Half Life imo.

Haha, no kidding about them prox mines! :D

I was a huge fan of goldeneye, had mates round most days for some 4 player action. Then, after sampling the joys of the mouse+keyboard combination, i found going back to the n64 controller painful and inacurate. Goldeneye had it's moment, HL had his :)

Give this man some tea and crumpets becuase he is spot on!(or something)

The thing that redeems console games from being mediocre compared to PC games is being able to play while sitting next to your buddies.

It makes a game like halo or goldeneye seem 10x better than they are.
