This game should give you your Diablo fix until part 3 comes out. It is made by the guys from Flagship, a studio formed by a bunch of former Blizzard devs that went belly-up after Hellgate. Torchlight is a typical hack 'n' slash game with randomized dungeons, phat lewtz and a (free) MMO part in the works. Mod tools will be released as soon as the game is out. Release price will be 20 euro / dollar and it will be out next month. Insta-buy for me.

Finally, ive been looking for something to kill my diablo thirst. Hopefully it wont be gay.

1. Is it for free?
2. Is it multiplayer?

The game will be 20 dollar / euro but the MMO part will be free when it comes out (with microtransactions ofc).

it's important to note the MMO part is about a year away. the initial release will have NO multiplayer ability.

microtransactions
Instant crap.

Microtransactions are a goddamn plague. "Play for free, pay to win" is a stupid business model that does nothing but reward those with money and alienate those who don't, rather than giving everyone a level playing field by making EVERYONE pay the same price and be entitled to the same stuff.

And you know who's to blame for microtransactions? People who still ask, "IS THIS MMO FREE?" People asking that goddamn question, often coupled with "I don't want to play if it isn't free" caused microtransactions.

Meh, the subscription model is arguably an even greater ripoff. Paying full price for a game and then $12 a month just to be able to play it is ridiculous. I'm sure with micro-transactions even if you're a regular spender you'll probably come out ahead. And besides, they're usually reserved for cosmetic differences.

The problem with micro-transactions is when they're used in retail, full-priced games. That shit is unacceptable. But a free MMO supported by micro-transactions and ads isn't too bad of a deal for the consumer.

I suppose it depends on how you look at it, but from my perspective the standard subscription model seems like a better deal, and it's more upfront with you. You buy the client, and then you pay for the service. Some people don't like this idea because "I already paid for the game; why should I pay more?"

Microtransactions to me look like "Look here, kids! We're going to sell you this game, and you just have to pay a ONE TIME FEE to play it. And you can play it all you like, for FREE...until you want that superpowered sword or that fancy hat. Also, your regular items FUCKING DEGRADE AND EVENTUALLY BREAK, but the items you buy won't. Except they might only last for a short duration after you purchase them before you have to purchase it again."

More often than not microtransactions in MMOs aren't just for simple "cosmetic differences;" they're for stuff you can only obtain through purchase. Now, would you spend less on a monthly fee than you would if you were a person who paid for items? Maybe. Maybe not. But at least with the monthly fee you know that you've paid up for a fair chance at getting everything instead of being a freeplay gamer and getting raped by someone who ponied up $10 in gPotatoes to purchase Death Sword +15.

I thought the screenshots and art style looked kind of meh, until I watched the gameplay videos. It actually looks quite neat. It seems like it could be worth $20.

Not a big fan of "Pay for items" here.

For me, it will all depend on how the base game itself pans out. Will you get meh stock weapons, skills, &/or spells, or will you get good or even great stuff? Can you finish the game pretty much god-like, such as is more or less available in a stand-alone full retail game, or will you run around with leather armor, getting owned by enemies that do extra damage to chars with leather armor, where the next guy, is running around in "Shiny Plate Adamantium Armor of the Whale", with a Holy glowing claymore sword of the Jester, while all you have is a wooden sword of sucky-ness.

I love this genre of game, but do not like micro-transactions. The visuals in the video looked colorful, though the art direction is a little too WoW-ish for my liking.

Time will tell.

Will Mythos beta testers get into the beta for this one? :E

Damnit, why can't this games come out sooner. Why do they all have to come out in one lump. Borderlands, L4D2 and Torchlight.

Torchlight is now on Steam. The full price is €15,99 / $19.99 which means that there is no euro=dollar for a change. This should make this game extra interesting for people from the old continent since it is only €14,39 if you pre-order. Don't know who made this happen by the way. Do studios have a say in the pricing?

This certainly is the spawn of Diablo 2.

The first review is up. Well, review ... It is more of a preview written by a fan, but it is still an entertaining read. Especially the part about the pets made my anticipation rise a few notches.

I should take a moment to talk about pets. I didn’t realize it at first, but my pet is an example of a place where I unconsciously was altering my play style without really realizing it. I read on the forums recently about pets being able to summon minions on their own, so when the first spell I found was a skeleton summon I popped it on the dog and ventured further into the dungeon. At first the occasional skeleton was just a cute distraction for the enemies so that they couldn’t surround me as easily, but as I watched I noticed the skeleton wasn’t just mindlessly smacking things, it actually had some sort of fighting skills included in its AI! Once in a while it would give a powerful smack to a monster, and quite often was picking things off on its own.

Pets for pets. That is awesome imo. The dude who wrote this review also uploaded a lot of videos in HD. Check 'em out, the game looks great.

I agree 110%

I took another long look at the games website & am starting to feel the tug that will result in me getting the game...

Damnit, Steam needs to stop making it so damn easy to buy things. Two clicks and I own this game now.

Plus it isn't exactly expensive. The pre-order price is $18,- / €14,34 on Steam. That is a steal if you ask me.

Cool.
I'll definitely be checking it out.

Neeeeed my Diablo fix.

I'm skeptical.

I had the highest hopes for Hellgate London. It was so expensive the first time out and I paid very much for it. Then I stopped playing after about a month..........

I hope they don't create a crap load of DLC only items to give players unfair advantages.

First of all, the mmo part of this game won't be coming out until late 2010, early 2011. Second, the game comes with the editor the devs used to make the game. Expect lots and lots and lots of mods. This is an oldskool pc game, not some MW2-pay-10-bucks-for-a-new-gun-DLC-will-bleed-you-white kind of game.

This will fill the void whenever I'm not playing Borderlands...then before I know it, I'll have my hands on StarCraft 2!

If you want to get a good idea of the game, then watch this stream. RPG Gamer is playing a review build live. Lvl 18 Alchemist.

EDIT Oh and there is another fan review.

I was under the impression that it would include multiplayer. I guess i will have to wait till they release the multiplayer version of the game.

wow wow wow WOW

hold on a second

Singelplayer only?

*puts credit card back in wallet*

Dont ever mention this game to me ever again. Not cool man...not cool. I was ready to quench my diablo thirst and had my energy all pumped up and ready to go...and had it all smashed to pieces :(

We'll mention it again when it goes multiplayer. The first tests with that will probably start soon.

Also, a little under 24 hours until release. Kinda getting pumped for this.

I may buy this tomorrow... the price seems right, and I certainly don't care about multiplayer.

I don't think I ever played with anyone on Hellgate London even though I was technically online. That game was actually pretty cool... just got ruined by the worst "business model" a game has ever had. Shoulda done it Guild Wars style, but no... ruined.

mmm... Wasn't the release date today? Or did they change the steam release date?
