Good Morning, and welcome to the Black Mesa Transit system. This automated train is provided for the security and convenience of the Black Mesa research facility personnel. The time is 8:47 a.m., current topside temperature is 93 degrees with an estimated high of 105. The Black Mesa compound is maintained at a pleasant 68 degrees at all times. This train is inbound from level three dormitories to sector C test labs and control facilities. If your intended destination is a high security area beyond sector C, you will need to return to the central transit hub in sector G and board a high security train. If you have not yet submitted your identity to a retinal client system, you must report to Black Mesa personnel for processing before you will be permitted to enter the high security branch of the transit system. Due to the high toxicity of the materials routinely handled in the Black Mesa Compound, no smoking, eating, or drinking is permitted inside the transit system. Please keep your limbs in the train at all times. Do not attempt to open the doors until the train has come to a complete stop at the station platform. In the event of an emergency, passengers are to remain seated and await further instructions. If it is necessary to leave the train, disabled personnel should be evacuated first. Please, stay away from electrified rails and proceed to an emergency station until assistance arrives. A reminder that the Black Mesa hazard course decathlon will commence this evening at 19:00 hours, in the level 3 facility. The semi-finals will later be announced in the secure access train. Remember, more lives than your own may depend on your fitness. Do you have a friend or relative who would make a valuable addition to the Black Mesa team? Immediate openings are available in the areas of: materials handling, and low clearance security. Please contact Black mesa personnel if you would like to sponsor someone. If you have any education in the areas of theoretical physics, unusual technology, or other high-end disciplines, contacts the Black Mesa facility. A reminder to all personnel: Regular radiation and biohazard screenings are a requirement of continued employment in the Black Mesa Research Facility. Missing a scheduled analysis or check-up is grounds for immediate termination. If you feel you have been exposed to radioactive or other materials, contact your head of duties and contact your radiation safety officer immediately. Work safe, work smart, your future depends on it. Now arriving at sector C test labs and control facilities. Please stand back from the automated door, and wait for the security officer to confirm your identity. Before exiting the train, be sure to check you area for personal belongings. Thank you, and have a very safe and productive day.

Security guard: Good morning, Mr. Freeman. Looks like you’re running late.

Files officer: Hey Mr. Freeman, I had a bunch of messages for you but we had a system crash about 20 minutes ago, and I’m still trying to find my files. One of those days, I guess. They were having some problems in the test chambers too, but I think that’s all straightened out. They’ve told me to make sure you headed down there as soon as you got into your hazard suit.

Suit: Welcome to the HEV mach 4 protective system. For use in hazardous environment conditions. High impact reactive armor systems activated. Atmospheric contamination sensors activated. Automatic medical system activated. Vital sign monitor online. Automatic defensive weapon system activated. Munitions level monitor activated. Communications interface online. Have a very safe day.

Guard: Go right on through, Mr. Freeman. Looks like you’re on the barrel today. (Sorry sir, I have specific orders not to let you through with out your hazard suit.)

P.A: Sergeant Bailey to topside checkpoint bravo.

Control room scientist 1: Ah, Gordon, here you are. We just sent the sample down to the test chamber.

C.R.S. 2: We’ve boosted the anti-mass spectrometer 105 percent. Bit of a gamble, but we needed the extra resolution.

C.R.S.3: The administrator is very concerned that we get a conclusive analysis of today’s sample. I gather they went to some lengths to get it.

C.R.S.1: They’re waiting for you Gordon. In the test chamber.

Panel scientist 1: Quick, it’s about to go critical!
P.S. 2: What the hell is going on with all our equipment?
P.S.1: It never worked in the first place.
P.S.1: I must remember to report this situation…

Test chamber scientist 1:I’m afraid we’ll be deviating a bit from standard analysis procedure today Gordon.
T.C.S2: Yes, but with good reason. This is a rare opportunity for us, this is the purest sample we’ve seen yet.
TCS1: And, potentially, the most unstable.
TCS2: Now, now, if we follow standard insertion procedures everything will be fine.
TCS1: I don’t know how you can say that, though I will admit that the possibility of a resonance cascade scenario is extremely unlike-
TCS2: Gordon doesn’t need to hear all this, he’s a highly trained professional. We’ve assured the administrator that nothing will go wrong.
TCS1: Ah… yes, you’re right. Gordon, we have complete confidence in you.
TCS2: Well, go ahead. Let’s let him in now.

Control room scientist 1: Testing? Testing? *ahem* Everything seems to be in order…
CRS2: Alright Gordon, you suit should keep you comfortable through all this. The specimen should arrive in a few moments. If you would be so good as to climb up and start the rotors we can bring the antimass spectrometer up to 80 percent and hold it there until the carrier arrives.
CRS2: Very good. We’ll take it from here.
CRS1: Power to stage 1 emitters in 3, 2, 1…I’m seeing predictable phase arrays. Stage 2 emitters activating…now.
CRS2: Gordon, we cannot predict how long the system can operate at this level, nor how long the reading will take, please, work as quickly as you can.
CRs1: Overhead capacitors to one-oh-five percent. Uh, it’s probably not a problem…probably, but I’m showing a small discrepancy in-well, no, it’s probably well within acceptable bounds again, sustaining sequence.
CRS2: I’ve just been informed the sample is ready, it should be coming up to you any momenet now. Look to the delivery system for your specimen.
(CRS2: Standard insertion for a non-standard specimen. Go ahead, Gordon, schlump the carrier into the spectrometer.
CRS4: Wh-what is he doing in there?
CRS2:Nothing you need to worry about, Gordon. Heh, ah, just go on ahead.)
CRS1:Oh dear!
CRS2: Gordon! Get away from the beams!
CRS1:Shutting down…(no!) Attempting shut down…It’s not! It’s not shutting down, it’s…
(screams)
(Gordon’s breathing)

PS1: why didn’t they listen? We tried to warn them. I’ve never thought I’d see a resonance cascade, let alone create one.
PS2:Gordon! You’re alive! Thank god for that hazard suit! I’m afraid to move, and the phones are out. Please, get to the surface as soon as you can, and let someone know we’re stranded down here! You’ll need me to activate the retinal scanners. I’m sure the rest of the science team will gladly to help you.

Guard: Gordon! Man, am I glad to see you. What the hell are these things? And why are they wearing science team uniforms?

Barnacle Sci: Gordon Freeman! Who would’ve thought you’d still be alive?

Couch sci: Gordon, if I’d know it was you I’d have let you in. Everyone’s heading for the surface. But I think they’re crazy not to stay put. Someone is bound to come by and rescue us.

Guard: Hey, don’t count on the cavalry finding us down here. Head for the surface. I know we’re out of orders, but we can still climb.

Elevator Sci: I…I can’t hold on…much longer…ahh!

Silo Sci: For god’s sake, open the silo doors! They’re coming for us! It’s our only way out-oh my god, we’re doomed!

Grunt sci: Rescued at last! Thank god you’re here.
Grunt sci2: Don’t shoot! I’m with the science team.

Grunt1: I didn’t sign up for this shit. And the civilians?
Grunt2:Who ordered this operation?
Grunt2: I shot twelve dumbass scientists and not one of ‘em falls back! This sucks.

Silodoorsci2: Well. So much for the government. Their idea of containment is to kill everyone involved with the project. Judging from your hazard suit, I’d say you were part of what went wrong. Aright, now look. If anyone can end this catastrophe, it’s the science team in the lambda complex at the opposite end of the base. With the transit system out, I couldn’t tell you how to get there. But there’s an old decommissioned rail system somewhere near here, beyond the silo complex. If you can make it through the rocket test labs, you might be able to worm your way through the old tunnels to track down whatever’s left of the lambda team. You can trust them, you can trust all of us. Good luck.

Tappersci: Fire the rocket engines…destroy the damn thing before it gets any larger…STAH!
Tapperbait: No! No! Get it off me! Get it off! AH!
Tapperguard: Be quiet! This thing hears us. I have a bad feeling about this.
Tapperguard2: Hey! Hey, over here! Eat lead, you outer-space octopu-agh! Oof…

Generatorsci: I hope no one expects me to start up the generators. Smithers went down there and never came back.
Smithers: This is my hiding spot, and I’m not moving until the overall situation has drastically improved. Now, go way, and don’t tell anyone I’m here. Ah! Oh dear.
Generatorsci: Excellent! Someone has restored all power! We’ll have the engine up again in no time.

Gargguard: Mister, if you can get the power on, that train’ll take us straight to the surface. I would try it myself, but it’s a long way down to the generator room. And there are things in the way…
Gargguard: I’m never gonna make it. You better go on without me.

Railguard: Freeman! I’ve been waiting for you. One of your scientist pals said to give you a message. You’re supposed to take this old rail system up to some kind of satellite delivery rocket. I don’t know where it is exactly, and the old man was so worried about getting out of here alive he didn’t tell me. Main thing is, the military aborted the launch. So, when you do find the rocket, you’ll have to get up to the control room and launch it yourself. He said something about a lambda team needing the rocket in orbit if they were ever gonna clean up this mess.

Snipergrunt1: So…who is this guy, Freeman?
SG2: They say he was at ground zero.
SG1: Science team? You think he was responsible? Sabotage, maybe?
Sg2: Yeah, maybe, all I know for sure is that he’s been killin’ my buddies.

Icthysci: Did you see? They said it was hauled from the Challenger Deep but I’m positive that beast never swan in terrestrial waters until a week ago. There’s a tranquilizer gun in the shark cage. I’m not sure if it will work on this species, but you’re welcome to try.

Freezersci: Ok, I’ll let you in. Gordon Freeman, it is you, isn’t it. The science team has been tracking your progress throughout Black Mesa with the security system. Unfortunately, so has the military. That suit of yours is full of tracking devices. Still, it’s better than going naked in this place. It’s cold in there, and you’ll have to hurry. It could zap your suit power in a matter of moments. If you’re bent on reaching the lambda complex, you’ll want to keep to the older industrial areas where the security system is full of holes. It’s worked for me- so far.

Assassinguard: Freeman, right? I have a message for ya. Make sure you don’t- augh!

KOGrunt1: Heh heh, nice hit. Ok, we got ‘im.
KOG2: Where are we taking this freeman guy?
KOG1: Topside, for questionin’.
KOG2: What the hell for? We got ‘im. Let’s kill ‘im now.
KOG1: And if they find the body?
KOG2: Body? What body?
Both: Heh heh heh…

EthicsGuard: Hey, it’s no good up there, it’s all sealed off. The only way out would be to find someone with scanner access who can open the front door. I’m pretty sure there’s a few scientists hiding somewhere in the lab. Maybe with both of us lookin’ we can track then down and get ‘em to let us out.

TauGuard: What is this, some kinda weapon?
TauSci: Put that down…it’s a prototype…
TG: Why aren’t we usin’ it?
TS: It’s much too unpredictable. Don’t overcharge it!
TG: Wha, what do you mean overch- ahhh!

Ethicsci1: A scientist! Thank god. Get us out of here before those military drones figure out where we’re hiding.
ES2: We all have retinal scanner acces. Escort us through the lobby and we can get out of the lab.
ES3: You’ll have to shut down the surgical unit first. Peter switched it on but I’m afraid he never made it back.
Any: Well, I’ll let you out. But I’m warning you, it’s hell out there. It’s completely under military control. You’ll have to sneak and fight your way from one end to the other. And don’t expect to see many of our peers along the way, but if you do survive and somehow manage to make it across the base, you’ll end up at the lambda complex, where the rest of the science team has taken shelter. I wouldn’t venture there myself, but I will let them know that you are coming.

SniperGuard: Help, help me… Somebody, please help me. I’m, I’m dyin’ out here. Please, help me…

TripSci: You’re heading for the lambda complex, aren’t you? I was heading there myself, until I wound up here and…well, simply, lost my nerve. Take one look through that door and you’ll see what I mean. I’m just going to wait out the catastrophe in here. If you intend to go on, then I beg of you, proceed with extreme caution!

GruntGuard: Hey! AHHHHHHH!

Strikeradio: Come in! Copper, do you copy? Forget about Freeman! We are abandoning the base. If you have any last bomb targets, mark them on the tactical map. Otherwise, get the hell out of there! Repeat, we are pulling out and commencing air strikes! Give us targets or get below!

Radio: Forget about Freeman, we are counting our losses and pulling out. Everyone is gathering at the surface for evac, Repeat, if you haven’t already, get to the surface.

Lambdasci: I apologize, Mr. Freeman, but I couldn’t risk opening that door until I was sure you had scoured the area. This is the last entrance to the lambda complex, ecery other has been sealed off to contain the invasion. When we realized you might actually make it here, we drew straws to see who should stay behind and let you through. Obviously, I drew the short one. My colleagues are waiting at the top of the lambda reactor. Waiting for you, I mean. The reactor is shut down right now, but you can activate it on your way up. You’ll have to flood the area anyway to get into the teleportation lab- you’re not authorized to know about those, but I can see you already know a great deal more than any one man is supposed to.

Wepsci: Were you in weapons research too? I built the gluon gun but I just can’t bring myself to use it on a living creature. You don’t look as if you have any trouble killing things.

PumpSci: Freeman, isn’t it? You’ll need to activate both pumps if you want to flood the reactor. And then that access pipe down there will take you to the core. Time is short!/Do not linger mister Freeman! You’ve turned on the pumps, now take the maintenance shaft to the reactor core without delay!

TeleSci: Gordon Freeman, you finally found us!
TeleGuard: Listen to the guy. He thought you’d never make it!
TS: This is the supply depot for our first service team. Quite a few handsome specimens were collected from the borer world and brought back this way, um, before the survey members started to be collected themselves, that is. We suspect there’s an immense portal over there created by the intense concentration of a single powerful being. You will know it when you see it. I hate to say this, Gordon, but you must kill this being.
TG: Yeah, you’d better kill it.
TS:Of course, you owe us nothing, Mr. Freeman, but you’ve come this far, you know as much about these creatures as anyone.
TG: Enough to know that if you don’t wipe it out, there wont be much for you to come home to.
TS: Yes. So, if you’re willing, my colleague is waiting for you at the main portal controls. He will open the gates for you, Mr. Freeman. Please, hurry.
TG: Don’t forget to gear up. And I’ll cover for you while you’re waiting for the portal to warm up.
TS: This, Mr.Freeman, is a long jump module, needed expressly for navigation in the world of beyond. I certainly hope you’ve received long-jump training, because once you’re in Xen, you will need it. I would advise you ot practice before you cross over.
LongJump: Power assist movement activated.
Telesci2: Hello Freeman! I’m up here! Practice your long jump if you must, but hurry up!/ Alright, I can open the portal now. The process is complicated, and once it has begun I must not be interrupted or I will have to start all over again. Don’t enter the portal until I give the ok. Understood? I will begin./ Almost there, Freeman. Get into position./ You must go! Now!

G-Man: Gordon Freeman, in the Flesh. Or, rather, in the hazard suit. I took the liberty of relieving you of your weapons. Most of them were, government property. As for the suit, I think you’ve earned it. The borderworld, Xen, Is now under our control for the time being, thanks to you. Quite a nasty piece of work you managed over there. I am impressed. That’s why I’m here, Mr. Freeman. I have recommended your services to my e-e-e-e-employers. And they have authorized be to offer you a job. They agree with me that you have…limitlessss potential. You’ve proved yourself a decisive man so I don’t expect you’ll have any trouble deciding what to do. If you’re interested just step through the portal and I will take that- as a yesss. Otherwise, well, ahhh-I can offer you a battle you have no chance of winning, rather an anticlimax after what you’ve just survived. Time to Cho-ose.

Wisely done, mister Freeman! I will see you up ahead.

Why is this movie focusing on Gordon's adventures anyway? Personally, I'd like to see story of another Black Mesa survivor, and some scenes from Half-Life and it's expansions.

To guy above: It should stay with Gordon, because Gordon is Half Life, and if we lose him, there really is no point doing anything to do with the storyline(and Hollywood, seeing this weakness, will exploit it, tying it in with the "Bourne" films somehow, and the main character will be called Geoffry Frohman, with a love interest played by Jessica Alba).

All the relationships formed by Freeman are the basis to the more story driven Half Life 2 ( and once again, knowing Hollywood they will make a second), and if freeman isn't there, we've lost all of those, leading to further Hollywood shenangigans(spelt that wrong, I know it).

Sorry about the abrupt ending and non-cohereant (spelt that wrong, too) statements.

Just wondering, what are your plans for adapting the health packs for a movie? They have no real equivalent in real life. Presumably Gordon would look pretty beaten up by the end of the film.

Is there going to be any reference to the fact that Freeman, by about the half way point of the movie, will have been pumped full of about a hundred litres of morphine?
Cause it should, nay, must be done.

Like Die Hard beaten up would work for defs.

except no fuggen Bruce Willy

I think you should scrap the whole idea and go make a Halo movie.
Much more action packed... Make it centered around marines, though. It'd be epic.. like that fan-made one.

i think i hate you now

I LOVE the idea of a HL2 movie
The Garg should totally be in there
Gman to
But do NOT MAKE IT LIKE THE DOOM MOVIE
Although that had its good and cool aspects over all the way they did it sucked

Also to avoid the actors issue you COULD go CGI like Beowulf

Use Gmod to make it. :)

The health pack problem was solved pretty simply but not including them. Gordon isn't in as many battles as he is in the game. Though... yeah, that is one of those "wait and see" type of things. We handled it. There will be no Health Packs... however, we do plan to have him charge up his suit once or twice, but that may change.

Of course Gordon should talk. But not much. He shouldn't talk until the resonance cascade (for tension purposes. A bit like There Will Be Blood) and a bit in the rest, but he doesn't have to talk as much as Alyx or anything (she never shuts the hell up).

Ot have him talk BEFORE the resonance cascade
Like it had something to do with him not being able to talk

One thing Valve have said is that they regret not doing enough foreshadowing of Xen and Nihilanth and they wanted to make the player associate the crystal at the start of the game with the crystals in Nihilanth's lair, but never found a way to do it. You could take the opportunity to try and to do that.

Hello Half-Life fans.

I am a Hollywood screenwriter/producer currently adapting the video game Half-Life into a big budget feature film. I am preparing to pitch the script to Valve within the next 3 to 12 months and then to major studios thereafter. I am fully aware of the fan bases instability with the idea of a Half-Life film. Every video game based film to this day has either been crap or has completely turned its back on the fans that made the property/brand popular in the first place. However, i am willing to take a break from my busy schedule to give this a try and see if me and my partners can make a fantastic Half-Life film.

Valve Software has refused dozens upon dozens of offers from people like me from Hollywood. However, i believe i and my partners have the understanding and patience to make Half-Life: The Movie as compelling, innovative and interesting as the game was when it was first released.

While i have down plenty of work, research and writing already on this subject, i figured the next logical step would be to connect with as many fans as possible and see what they love about Half-Life and what they think should translate to a feature film.

Now, please, leave the "Half-Life shouldn't be a movie" or "Gordon shouldn't talk" discussion out of this. I have been through these steps already and trust me, i have enough projects and work to do, that if there is any hint that this film cannot be done right, it won't happen. I am sure Valve will just tell me know anyways if they don't like it. So Valve will be the judge of whether it should be done or not. I am not here to piss off a fan base numbering in the millions. The Half-Life fans are going to be the ones to spread the word. If this film is as good as i plan for it to be, the fans will spread the word.

Just so everyone knows, this is an adaption of the first Half-Life game. The central character is indeed Gordon Freeman. Barney Calhoun does have a speaking role in the script, however it only lasts for about 4 to 6 pages.

So, answer me these questions. What do you like about the story of Half-Life? What was it about the experience that brought you in and kept you there?

Also, what are your ideas for a Half-Life film?

Give me any concerns you may have here... the more feedback, the better.

All i ask it that you keep your posts mature and orderly. This is a serious project so i need serious ideas and concerns.

Thanks,
Your friendly Hollywood Producer

One thing Valve have said is that they regret not doing enough foreshadowing of Xen and Nihilanth and they wanted to make the player associate the crystal at the start of the game with the crystals in Nihilanth's lair, but never found a way to do it. You could take the opportunity to try and to do that.

Yes, we have listened to all the commentaries and have read all the books based on the game for research. This is one thing, in further revisions, we are going to try and do.

In case someone else hasn't said these things already, this is what you should mainly focus on.

-Staying as true to the real Half-Life as much as is possible in a movie.

-Don't use any cliche's like the DooM movie that completely change the story, or split people up in dumb ways, if you're going to make a movie about the game, it better be very damn near exactly what the game is. Don't have any love scandals between alyx and other players to build suspense in Alyx's and gordon's relationship. Don't add anything at all to the story, because it has enough action and drama in it to please any crowd.

-Don't use cheap actors, be a hard critic on the acting, because shitty acting makes the rest of the movie shitty.

-be sure to use Valve's music for the right parts, if they let you make the movie, the music was made specifically for half-Life's action, and nothing will ever suit it better.

-know the story like the back of your hand before you decide to write the script.

-Don't just say the Half-Life movie is based off of half-life, and let it become what DooM The movie is to DooM the game. Nobody but people that had heard of the game before knew that DooM was a game before a movie. I've talked to people who actually thought DooM 3 was based off the movie... Wanted to bludgeon them with a tire iron... but anyways, please credit Valve's half-Life at the beginning and end of the movie.

-Take any friendly advice that this forum throws at you. We want half-life to blow up bigger than halo more than you could imagine, because halo is a mediocre game, and a mediocre story, and people don't know what they're missing from the Half-Life series, so make it kick ass, or don't do it. I would like this to be a titan like Transformers was. I'm sure the rest on here would agree.

-Most of the stupid replies you get are from trolls, so just kick them in the nuts and move on.

Hope it works out for you, man, but valve are even more critical on Game based movies than us.

valve are even more critical on Game based movies than us.

We know they are, so we are planning to come to them fully prepared for a game plan to make the movie as fun and original as the game was.

I'm getting some wierd bug in we've got hostiles :O everything is already dead and all the boxes are smashed. what? anyway, movieman, this might be of use-

T.C.S2: Yes, but with good reason. This is a rare opportunity for us, this is the purest sample we?ve seen yet.
TCS1: And, potentially, the most unstable.
TCS2: Now, now, if we follow standard insertion procedures everything will be fine.
TCS1: I don?t know how you can say that, though I will admit that the possibility of a resonance cascade scenario is extremely unlike-
TCS2: Gordon doesn?t need to hear all this, he?s a highly trained professional. We?ve assured the administrator that nothing will go wrong.
TCS1: Ah? yes, you?re right. Gordon, we have complete confidence in you.
TCS2: Well, go ahead. Let?s let him in now.

Control room scientist 1: Testing? Testing? *ahem* Everything seems to be in order?
CRS2: Alright Gordon, you suit should keep you comfortable through all this. The specimen should arrive in a few moments. If you would be so good as to climb up and start the rotors we can bring the antimass spectrometer up to 80 percent and hold it there until the carrier arrives.
CRS2: Very good. We?ll take it from here.
CRS1: Power to stage 1 emitters in 3, 2, 1?I?m seeing predictable phase arrays. Stage 2 emitters activating?now.
CRS2: Gordon, we cannot predict how long the system can operate at this level, nor how long the reading will take, please, work as quickly as you can.
CRs1: Overhead capacitors to one-oh-five percent. Uh, it?s probably not a problem?probably, but I?m showing a small discrepancy in-well, no, it?s probably well within acceptable bounds again, sustaining sequence.
CRS2: I?ve just been informed the sample is ready, it should be coming up to you any momenet now.
CRS1:Shutting down?(no!) Attempting shut down?It?s not! It?s not shutting down, it?s?
(screams)
(Gordon?s breathing)

PS1: why didn?t they listen? We tried to warn them. I?ve never thought I?d see a resonance cascade, let alone create one.
PS2:Gordon! You?re alive! Thank god for that hazard suit! I?m afraid to move, and the phones are out. Please, get to the surface as soon as you can, and let someone know we?re stranded down here! You?ll need me to activate the retinal scanners. I?m sure the rest of the science team will gladly to help you.

Guard: Gordon! Man, am I glad to see you. What the hell are these things? And why are they wearing science team uniforms?

Barnacle Sci: Gordon Freeman! Who would?ve thought you?d still be alive?

Couch sci: Gordon, if I?d know it was you I?d have let you in. Everyone?s heading for the surface. But I think they?re crazy not to stay put. Someone is bound to come by and rescue us.

Guard: Hey, don?t count on the cavalry finding us down here. Head for the surface. I know we?re out of orders, but we can still climb.

Elevator Sci: I?I can?t hold on?much longer?ahh!

Silo Sci: For god?s sake, open the silo doors! They?re coming for us! It?s our only way out-oh my god, we?re doomed!

Grunt sci: Rescued at last! Thank god you?re here.
Grunt sci2: Don?t shoot! I?m with the science team.

Grunt1: I didn?t sign up for this shit. And the civilians?
Grunt2:Who ordered this operation?
Grunt2: I shot twelve dumbass scientists and not one of ?em falls back! This sucks.

Silodoorsci2: Well. So much for the government. Their idea of containment is to kill everyone involved with the project. Judging from your hazard suit, I?d say you were part of what went wrong. Aright, now look. If anyone can end this catastrophe, it?s the science team in the lambda complex at the opposite end of the base. With the transit system out, I couldn?t tell you how to get there. But there?s an old decommissioned rail system somewhere near here, beyond the silo complex. If you can make it through the rocket test labs, you might be able to worm your way through the old tunnels to track down whatever?s left of the lambda team. You can trust them, you can trust all of us. Good luck.

Tappersci: Fire the rocket engines?destroy the damn thing before it gets any larger?STAH!
Tapperbait: No! No! Get it off me! Get it off! AH!
Tapperguard: Be quiet! This thing hears us. I have a bad feeling about this.
Tapperguard2: Hey! Hey, over here! Eat lead, you outer-space octopu-agh! Oof?

Generatorsci: I hope no one expects me to start up the generators. Smithers went down there and never came back.
Smithers: This is my hiding spot, and I?m not moving until the overall situation has drastically improved. Now, go way, and don?t tell anyone I?m here. Ah! Oh dear.
Generatorsci: Excellent! Someone has restored all power! We?ll have the engine up again in no time.

Gargguard: Mister, if you can get the power on, that train?ll take us straight to the surface. I would try it myself, but it?s a long way down to the generator room. And there are things in the way?
Gargguard: I?m never gonna make it. You better go on without me.

Railguard: Freeman! I?ve been waiting for you. One of your scientist pals said to give you a message. You?re supposed to take this old rail system up to some kind of satellite delivery rocket. I don?t know where it is exactly, and the old man was so worried about getting out of here alive he didn?t tell me. Main thing is, the military aborted the launch. So, when you do find the rocket, you?ll have to get up to the control room and launch it yourself. He said something about a lambda team needing the rocket in orbit if they were ever gonna clean up this mess.

Snipergrunt1: So?who is this guy, Freeman?
SG2: They say he was at ground zero.
SG1: Science team? You think he was responsible? Sabotage, maybe?
Sg2: Yeah, maybe, all I know for sure is that he?s been killin? my buddies.

Icthysci: Did you see? They said it was hauled from the Challenger Deep but I?m positive that beast never swan in terrestrial waters until a week ago. There?s a tranquilizer gun in the shark cage. I?m not sure if it will work on this species, but you?re welcome to try.

Freezersci: Ok, I?ll let you in. Gordon Freeman, it is you, isn?t it. The science team has been tracking your progress throughout Black Mesa with the security system. Unfortunately, so has the military. That suit of yours is full of tracking devices. Still, it?s better than going naked in this place. It?s cold in there, and you?ll have to hurry. It could zap your suit power in a matter of moments. If you?re bent on reaching the lambda complex, you?ll want to keep to the older industrial areas where the security system is full of holes. It?s worked for me- so far.

Assassinguard: Freeman, right? I have a message for ya. Make sure you don?t- augh!

KOGrunt1: Heh heh, nice hit. Ok, we got ?im.
KOG2: Where are we taking this freeman guy?
KOG1: Topside, for questionin?.
KOG2: What the hell for? We got ?im. Let?s kill ?im now.
KOG1: And if they find the body?
KOG2: Body? What body?
Both: Heh heh heh?

EthicsGuard: Hey, it?s no good up there, it?s all sealed off. The only way out would be to find someone with scanner access who can open the front door. I?m pretty sure there?s a few scientists hiding somewhere in the lab. Maybe with both of us lookin? we can track then down and get ?em to let us out.

TauGuard: What is this, some kinda weapon?
TauSci: Put that down?it?s a prototype?
TG: Why aren?t we usin? it?
TS: It?s much too unpredictable. Don?t overcharge it!
TG: Wha, what do you mean overch- ahhh!

Ethicsci1: A scientist! Thank god. Get us out of here before those military drones figure out where we?re hiding.
ES2: We all have retinal scanner acces. Escort us through the lobby and we can get out of the lab.
ES3: You?ll have to shut down the surgical unit first. Peter switched it on but I?m afraid he never made it back.
Any: Well, I?ll let you out. But I?m warning you, it?s hell out there. It?s completely under military control. You?ll have to sneak and fight your way from one end to the other. And don?t expect to see many of our peers along the way, but if you do survive and somehow manage to make it across the base, you?ll end up at the lambda complex, where the rest of the science team has taken shelter. I wouldn?t venture there myself, but I will let them know that you are coming.

SniperGuard: Help, help me? Somebody, please help me. I?m, I?m dyin? out here. Please, help me?

TripSci: You?re heading for the lambda complex, aren?t you? I was heading there myself, until I wound up here and?well, simply, lost my nerve. Take one look through that door and you?ll see what I mean. I?m just going to wait out the catastrophe in here.

Everyone is gathering at the surface for evac, Repeat, if you haven?t already, get to the surface.

Lambdasci: I apologize, Mr. Freeman, but I couldn?t risk opening that door until I was sure you had scoured the area. You?ll have to flood the area anyway to get into the teleportation lab- you?re not authorized to know about those, but I can see you already know a great deal more than any one man is supposed to.

Wepsci: Were you in weapons research too? I built the gluon gun but I just can?t bring myself to use it on a living creature. You don?t look as if you have any trouble killing things.

There are a few of those lines that are incorrect... For instance, the security guard inf Office Complex, he says "Don't count on the cavalry to find us down here, head for the surface. The elevators are out of order, but we can still climb."

Freakin sweet... I think this one (If legit, which I'm sure it is) will go through. :)

Important weapons to show in film. In order of importence.

9 mil., Shotgun, Hivehand, Snark, Gluon gun, and tau cannon and Crowbar.

Yes, Gordon should definately talk. He's not gonna be an incredibly talkative person, but he needs to talk. Otherwise, I think it'd be corny as hell. Gordon isn't supposed to be mute. He's supposed to be YOU when you play the game. You talk for him with your actions. Like in Half-Life:

Barny: What are these things and why are they wearing science team uniforms?
Gordon: I don't know, but let's take them out!
OR
Gordon: Whatever the hell they are they're your problem *runs away*

But just don't let Gordon say any corny one liners!!!

Also, I like the idea of somehow finding a way to foreshadow Xen and the Nihilanth.

Another thing: Barney, Eli, and Kleiner need to be included. They're either going to have to appear to Gordon a lot, or there will have to be a few different story lines that follow Gordon, Barney, and Eli and Kleiner (Eli and Isaac will prob. travel together) like Lord of the Rings follows Frodo and Sam and then switches to the rest of the fellowship (Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas). If there isn't enough coverage of these characters, then in the HL2 movie Barney will show up and say "Remember me? Barney from Black Mesa!" and the audience will say "No. No, I don't remember you."

THIS MUST BE AN AMAZING MOVIE!

Well, yeah. I'm also missing some things, like if you wait on some stuff, or if you die, what have ye. It's not perfect, but still useful.

As for the crystals... if you wanted to be a bit blunt, you could have a small "prologue" at the beginning of the movie, showing the helmeted HEV scientists in a "mysterious cave" (which is Xen) gathering samples of crystal. Then have them remark on one especially pure sample they've found. Then it would go from there to the tram ride, where the credits would go, theme song, what have you. I think you should have the SUBJECT: GORDON FREEMAN stuff during the tram ride as well. The tram ride itself would be probably from fixed camera angles, watching the tram ride through the canyons or whatever, and maybe some additional shots that look like they're from security cameras by the track.
When Gordon arrives at the platform, and is walking through the hallways, poeple would be aknowledging him, saying he's late, or mentioning the faulty security and equipment. At this point, the camera would be going between shots behind Gordon, at his leg level, showing him hurrying to get to the HEV station and put his suit on. Maybe have a g-man sighting here.
I'm aware I'm talking about things that are probably director's type of subjects, camera angles and whatnot, but it's the easiest way for me to explain it. I have next to no experience with scripts. Anyway,
So he's putting on his suit, and he's got it on, and you finally see his face, and the HEV voice tells what it is, blah blah. The suit itself would probably announce things at critical times, like maybe during some kind of fight scene it announces power levels dropping, or blood level low, etc. Just don't make it comic relief. Please.
Some of the scientist scenes on Gordon' way to the test chamber are fairly important, especially the ones regarding "purest sample we've seen yet, they're waiting for you in the test chamberrr" or "Gordon doesn't need to hear all this, he's a highly trained proffesional" (I mean not those lines, but the whole exchanges) And during this, Gordon would be grunting, nodding, uh-huh, whatever. He doesn't really need... to say anything particularly articulate.
Well, let's let him in now. Gordon walks into the test chamber, there's the obligatory epic shot, camera coming down from the cieling, panning around the emitters, the ominous atmospheric noise-music going.. I think players will know what I mean. The machine jargon from the sci's is going in the background, gordon types at a console or something a bit until the sample comes up, and he pushes it in.
You know how in the game, you basically push the cart and it goes flying into the AMS and immedeately green lightning starts flying everywhere... give it a little time to build up, you know. Some machinery clamping down, things look alright for a minute, then shit goes wrong.
The blackness, the breathing, little flashes of xen, all good. Not the bullsquids, I think, but the vort circle, definitely.
Gordon comes back to the test chamber after his foray, he climbs up the ladder, Barney comments on the zombie he kills (have to have this zombie at least. But I agree with whoever said not a lot of zombies).

Office Complex- this part has a few important things to it, such as the introduction of barnacles, and especially the vorts. It's important to show them communicating, and the slave collars. Make sure it's apparent that they are not little mindless rodents like the headcrabs are.
The freezer I think would be a very cool part to have (hyuck hyuck) and I think it's more distinctive than the frozen core ("it's cold in there") but I can't think of a way to make it relevant. He climbs through the freezer vents and ends up at the screwy sentry guns, which could be potentially useful (backs up all the talk about faulty secrity systems, reinforces the idea of several doors not opening like they should, INCLUDING the silo door)
Also, possible have the scientist who falls off the ladder in the elevator shaft. I forgot to mention have lots of chaos, corpses, etc. Blood smeared, whatever.

We've got Hostiles- "Open the silo doors, they're coming for us!" This part is crucial, because it could be used to introduce the military force. The scientist runs off, meets a soldier, and does the bit about "thank you for rescuing us!" then gets killed. Show the guard in the booth, he's badass. He freaking punches a zombie in the face twice in the game. Then the scientist in there opens the door for gordon and explains how the military is there to quiet everything by killing everyone in the facility, and how gordon should take the old rail system to lambda core, because the people there should know how to fix this mess.

Blast Pit- I don't think this part is entirely necessary. Gordon is climbing around the bottom of the silo, hears the banging, sees the tentacle eat the scientist, whatever. He sneaks past the tentacle using grenades, to get to the rail system. At some point he could see the engine of the rocket to provide some forshadowing, but the whole fuel/oxy/power/test fire thing is unnecessary. It's be easier if he just walked through to "power up".

The garg is a favorite of many, including me, so it's be nice to see it in the movie. The way the level opens, I think, is very good for this- Coming out of a hallway into the big rail hub with the garg killing soldiers. Gordon first visits the control room, where the guard tells Gordon he's dying, get to the surface, etc. Godon tries to switch the tracks, the power's out, damn. He sneaks around, ends up at the big generator, but the garg is chasing him! He runs, flips it on, the garg goes down. But, don't have him explode like in the game. The reason for this, is, he could come back later as the second garg, in the parking level. Make it the same one, to be simple. He's got scorch marks on him , but now he's angry, and gordon ends up blowing him up using the satellite missles or whatever it was. Another option is to skip the control room, the train power, and the first garg (and just have the one in the parking lot, which I think is a better area for it) and the train is just ready to go and he goes to On a Rail.

Ok, I'm only partly through playing On a Rail at this point, and the only important things so far are the Guard telling Gordon about the satellite-delivery rocket, and the military sprays- "surrender freeman", "Yore dead freeman", etc. This would lead into the assassins. The assassins are a cool part, but are also a minor storyline that would not do much more than clutter things, I think. Unless it was taken further, like in Opposing Force, and became a major part of the story. The whole black-ops sent in to cover up the military's mistakes. Which would also be a bit unnecessary.

EDIT: other notes, things I completely forgot. Eli at the beginning. Kleiner... should probably be one of the scientists telling gordon about the administrator's test sample. I mentioned barney should be the one that is shooting the zombies in the beginning, and also possible the barney later on in the lambda core. I know blue shift says that the one banging on the door is barney, but hell, they're ALL named barney.

Also, I think gordon's most used gun should be the MP5 or M4 or whatever, along with his crowbar. I actually don't think he should use his crowbar that much, and he should be slightly awkward with the gun. Maybe hit things more than shoot them.

Que-Ever, pretty good, but remember: *ep 2 spoiler!!!!!*

Gman is the one who chose the crystal for the test chamber, so that the Resonance Cascade would happen. The scientists of Black Mesa never found it themselves. In fact, no Black Mesa scientist probably ever stepped foot on Xen before the Resonance Cascade. Of course, it shouldn't be spoiled in the first movie that Gman did that. It just needs to be made clear that the crystal came from the Nihilanth.

Also, when Gordon makes it to Xen, it must be made clear that something else is controlling Xen (the Combine). HL1 didn't do a terrible job with this, but I think it could have been done better. Machines that look like Combine technology should be scattered all around in some areas and maybe you will see a machine holding down a Vortigaunt and attaching those slave-shackles to it. Show that the alien grunts are strong genetic mutations of vortigaunts that the combine created (since I'm assuming that's what they are and why they didn't appear in HL2). And maybe (just maybe) include some of the synths (striders, crab synth, morter synth) walking along far in the distance along with an organized army of vorts and alien grunts. The Nihilanth should be covered with surgical scars and Combine technology (it's chamber also partly covered with Combine technology).

It also must be made clear that the destruction of the Nihilanth is what set the Vorts free from the Combine.

This is all great. I appreciate it. Keep this stuff coming. Half-Life is a series that is looked at different ways and to see all these different perspectives is great.

Here is a few common things we have been stumped on in our writing stages. We made a decision on these already (however, decisions are always subject to change), but i am interested and seeing what you people think...

Should Gordon have a helmet or no helmet? Explain why.

Should Dr. Kleiner, Dr. Mossman and Dr. Breen be included besides references? If so, how do you think they should be included? Also explain why.

What villains and weapons do you think are essential for the film? Explain each, however stuff like head crabs and pistol don't need much explanation.

Are there any chapters, segments or parts of the game you feel are essential to include in fair detail? Again, explain.

Likewise, are there any chapters of the game you feel are useless to the story to include?
Again, explain.

And like always, other topics are welcome.

However, i would like everyone to stay away from casting suggestions and dream directors and such. That won't help us currently and as i have seen a lot of that discussion has been done it death.

My answers for those questions:

Should Gordon be wearing the helmet the whole time? no. maybe it can go back like a hood or somehow fold up and stay out of the way when not in use.

I always imagined Dr. Vance and Dr. Kleiner meeting up eventually and working together to find Eli's family and get out of there. Dr. Mossman probably doesn't even need to be mentioned. Dr. Breen should definately be mentioned (by name, not just as the administrator) many times and pics of him should be scattered around the facility. He most likely knew the Resonance Cascade was coming and was in a safe place until he could surrender Earth for us and gain power.

I think that many weapons should be disincluded, or at least not carried around much (he can't REALLY carry around that many weapons anyways). I think the weapon that shoots bees should be left out (totally forgot the name). The experimental weapons like the Tau Cannon should probably only be used once an not carried around. I think you should unclide every enemy (even if Gordon doesn't fight them) except for those flying, large-headed guys who were near the Nihilanth (totally drawing a blank), alien grunts, and gargantuas (but gargantuas are so awesome that you will need to include at least one or fans will burn your house down :D)

Really, just the basics. You need to include Gordon on the tram, him on his way to the test chamber, the test chamber (duh), the freezer would be cool, the part where you launch the satellite. You know, just the basics and all the stuff you need in between. I would really love it if you included the dam too!

It's been a looong time since I've played Half-Life all or most of the way through and I'm real tired so I can't answer that last question right now. Just can't think of anything. But like I said, just include the basic scenes you need and all the events inbetween those that are necessary.

Yeah, sorry. It's easy for me to say what I Think is needed my telling waht I'm thinking, and I guess I think cinematically. Basically I'm full of BS.
Some of these questions I've answered, but it'll be hard to find them in my posts, so reiteration time-

Should Gordon have a helmet or no helmet? Explain why. I think not, because any situations that involve environmental hazards necessitating a helmet are a bit rediculous (lakes of toxic waste...?) plus we need SOME character connection.

Should Dr. Kleiner, Dr. Mossman and Dr. Breen be included besides references? If so, how do you think they should be included? Also explain why. Kleiner yes, as one of the scientists that explains the situation to Gordon in the beginning. The other two, I don't think so.

What villains and weapons do you think are essential for the film? Explain each, however stuff like head crabs and pistol don't need much explanation. Zombies, a bullsquid or two, VORTS definitely, garg, maybe controllers, maybe alien grunts. Weapons gordon should use, I think should be limited. SMG, crowbar, and near the end I think a tau cannon.

Are there any chapters, segments or parts of the game you feel are essential to include in fair detail? Again, explain. Working on this.

Likewise, are there any chapters of the game you feel are useless to the story to include? Again, explain. Also.

The dam scene is included, cause the early research we have done proved that the dam is a memorable sequence that people will notice if it wasn't included... and yes, its an action sequence.

You just need to sum up "what do people remember about playing HL1, and what makes Half-Life, Half-Life. Of course the story would need to remain virtually un-changed (G Man gives scientists at Black Mesa a crystal, causes resonance cascade, stuff comes through, chaos ensues, Gordan tries to help scientists escape, gets chased by army clean-up, goes to xen, saves the day, is put in stasis by G Man).

Basically, would it REALLY be the same without that character / event, and would the character / event be missed???

In my opinion, those "must have" things to be in the movie (yes you will need to add to these) would include:

Characters:

Barney
G Man
Kleiner
random scientists
Special forces
Headcrabs
Zombies
Vortigaunts
Nhililanth

Without them and Gordon, it's just not HL. Others can be referenced if need be, but those MAKE the HL characters world.

Things that people will remember from playing the game. The list of those that you MUST have in the movie include:

Tram ride at the start. Somehow.
Resonance cascade
chased by army special forces
going to xen
helping scientists
bizarre obsticals/hazards throughout - elevator shafts, radioactive goo, reactor cores etc

If the look of the movie sets comes close to looking like the game (and how people REMEMBER the game), the story is NOT messed with (DOOM - it's EVIL from a dimension to HELL, not a freaking VIRUS grrrrrr), and those listed things are met, then the movie stands a good chance of being fantastic. Of course, my list is probably not perfect, but hopefully you get the idea. Once you have simplified it down to what MAKES HL for the people that have played it, then you can more easily decide how to piece together the screenplay, so the story fits the new medium of being a movie not a game, and the appropriate budget etc constraints - as well as telling the story to those that have not played the game(s).

Half-Life movie, huh? I've got a script for you, mate.

HALF-LIFE

Half-Life: The Movie - What do you want

HALFLIFETHEMOVIE
Hello Half-Life fans.

I am a Hollywood screenwriter/producer currently adapting the video game Half-Life into a big budget feature film. I am preparing to pitch the script to Valve

CUT TO YOUTH

The boy stares hard at the monitor. His mouth twists. His wide eyes glow unnaturally red. One hand reaches for his forehead and he facepalms.

His free hand taps the keyboard slowly, deliberately. On the monitor, one word is spelled out.

FADE OUT

THE END

Seriously mate, don't do this. I don't know if you're legit, but if you are, just stop. I can't say if you're a Half-Life fan or just the latest Hollywood screenwriter who thinks he can take a game, write up a condensed version for Hollywood, and reap fame and monetary success. When has that ever happened? Ever? I'm inclined to think you're the latter more than the former, some guy whose heard of HL's commercial success and wants to get a piece of that as opposed to some dreamy fan with a grand vision of how the game'd look on the big screen. In either case I ask you to abandon this. You're not going to get anything out of it except for liberal amounts of hate and fanboy rage, as well as commercial and critical disappointment. Don't think you'll be the one to break the mold--game adaptations suck, and suck hard. All of them, without exception.

Not everything needs to be made into a movie, mate. Hollywood's love interest with gaming has proven this time and time again, and you're only contributing to the problem. You'll probably reply back that you want to avoid all that, that's why you're asking fans, this that and the other thing that's different and you want to avoid hurting the franchise...it doesn't make any difference, dude. Just leave it alone. You want to make a movie? Grab another IP or make one up yourself. THIS one doesn't need to be tampered with.

Also, when Gordon makes it to Xen, it must be made clear that something else is controlling Xen (the Combine). HL1 didn't do a terrible job with this, but I think it could have been done better.

Combine were never, have never, and may never be on Xen. No need for synths, no need for Nihilanth to have Combine technology grafted to his body, no need for any ominous citadels, thumpers, or warp gates to be shown on Xen. Xen's 100% organic.

Also, grunts aren't genetically modified vorts. Stop reading that awful fucking Half-Life timeline website, it's full of shit.

Darkside's great. But ginger?!

HALF LIFE MOVIE IS A BAD BAD BAD IDEA.
