HBO gave ASoIaF pilot the greenlight

Yeah, its been awhile since I've read the book (5+ years) so I'm a little hazy.

I could have sworn that he tried to get Jon to ally with him against the Lannisters, and that he was about to march south from the wall. I really need to re-read the books again.

Wouldn't work. Remember, Jon doesn't become lord commander until after Stannis arrives. It's debatable whether the Watch could have held the wildling army without Stannis' help. They used Jon as a last resort to try and assassinate Mance Rayder. Point is, Stannis hardly needed 500 poorly armed, old, and starving Watchmen to help him fight the West.

Oh, yeah I should spoiler my previous posts.

I distinctly remember Stannis saying he would make Robb the Lord of Winterfell if he helped him. What was he asking of Jon, if not his support in the campaign?

You mean Jon. Support both his campaigns, yes. Remember, Stannis is all about the rule of law. In his eyes, if he legitimately has the heir of the North on his side, he could win more people over to his cause. He wants to have the right to defend the Wall. Besides, allying to the more moderate North as opposed to the unruly and implacable ironmen makes much more sense.

Yeah, that was really good.

Also, a thing about the Stark family. Not much to see if you've read the books, but a good general set up of the situation for people who havent.

More house featurettes. Lots of new footage in these ones.

2 seconds of Tywin.

And you can totally see Daenerys' tits through that dress.

All in all, good teases.

Hey did you guys know that the seven kingdoms is a single realm made up of seven realms that once were independent?

Gonna need you to elaborate on that a bit. What is a realm, first of all?

Haha, I noticed how he said that in every one too. Videos are getting me pumped for this to come out.

Hey did you guys know that the seven kingdoms is a single realm made up of seven realms that once were independent?
Fun fact: The seven kingdoms (not including the Gift) is made of nine different realms:

  1. The North
  2. The Iron Islands
  3. The Riverlands
  4. The Eyrie
  5. The Westerlands
  6. The Reach
  7. The Stormlands
  8. The Crownlands
  9. Dorne
The reason is that the Riverlands was rules by the Iron Islands when Aegon the Conqueror landed and the Crownlands didn't exist then (They're the region around King's Landing and Dragonstone directly ruled by the king).

Hey did you guys know that the seven kingdoms is a single realm made up of seven realms that once were independent?

Oh shit, for real? Do they each have their own heraldry?

EDIT: I thought Dorne was independently ruled, and thus not considered part of the 7 Kingdoms.

Dorne is still under the rule of the Iron Throne, though only so much as the Iron Islands and the North is (ie, pretty much in name only). Dorne wasn't conquered though, they entered the realm by a marriage contract.

I see. I just bought the first book again (in hardcover this time, since my paperback one is in rough shape after moving 5 times) so I'll be rereading the whole series again as a refresher.

Also, anyone else think we should get a mod to change the title to the show's name now that we know what it is? Might help advertise it better to people who don't recognize the aSoIF acronym, and we need to advertise this show because if it gets cancelled after just one season then I'm going on a murdering rampage.

I'm wondering whether if on April 15th or so one of us should start a separate Game of Thrones thread, maybe forbidding book spoilers and focusing solely on the show as a standalone work. I've never actually been in our literature forum, but maybe we could create a seperate A Dance With Dragons thread there perhaps so we can all geek out come July 12th? There are only about five or six of us who seem like really hardcore fans.

Not a bad idea. Probably good to start a new fresh thread for the show when it airs.

EDIT:
Petyr Baelish. This actor seems perfect. Too perfect. He seems like he might be really creepy in real life, he can't even keep himself and the character straight when talking about Petyr. He keeps switching between saying "Petyr" and "I." I mean, the last thing he says in the video... "Littlefinger thrives in times of chaos or disquiet. Thats when I'm at my sharpest and at my best... and having fun" and then he gives that daydreaming creepy ass slow motion grin.. Hes going to be a ****ing awesome character in the show because of this.

So yeah I'll be watching the first 6 episodes two days before the premiere airs. Allllriiiight.

I'll be watching only the first episode several hours after it airs, so suck that.

I'll be watching it with a friend every monday, since he works sunday nights, and I don't have HBO.

I'm in the same boat as you, Krynn. I need to find out which of my friends has HBO, because, shocking as this may sound, I don't get it in my dorm room.

UPDATE: I was thoroughly impressed by the 15-minute preview, although I was surprised at how little it covered, only about 1 and a 1/2 chapters. To my utter lack of surprise, Arya stole the show despite not speaking a single word.

Raz, now that you're reading fictional books, you should read this book series. Its really, really good.

Got all four books from amazon for pretty cheap. Started the first a few days ago-

The first chunk of expository chapters are remarkably slow, though it's beginning to get interesting since Bran fell.

Yeah, personally I think the first part of Game of Thrones is the worst part of the entire series. Its not only slow, but probably the worst writing as well. The fact that Tyrion does mid-air front flip is all the proof I need to back up that statement. Thankfully it gets much better, quickly after that.

I find it pretty bad too. Not so much for the writing (seems about the same as CoK; it's not until AFfC that his style starts really evolving), but because of the extremely sparse exposition. He takes in media res to the utter extreme: we're introduced to a plethora of characters and locations with almost no exposition as to who/what they are or why they're significant.

It's really hard to get people into this series because of it. I've recently tried getting my dad into the book, but it's taken weeks of constant pressure by me to get him through the first couple of chapters.

I read that part of the chapter three times so I could visualize it in my head in a way that would not make it seem ridiculous, but I simply could not. Is all of Thrones meh in light of the rest of the series, or just the first chunk?

Just the first bit. In fact, I think the overall plot thats delivered in Thrones is the best of all the books. Though that may just be because its the first book in the 'fantasy' genre that didnt suck, so maybe it was just the initial novelty that makes it seem better.

How much sex are in these books lol? I am an adult and all, but some of these sex scenes get pretty romance-novely/fan fic-ish at times ;) Like especially when Drogo and Dany get it on; I could just imagine George Martin sweating profusely with a massive erection as he was writing it. I couldn't help but crack a wide retarded smile while reading it.
Not that it will stop me from reading, I just want to know how much nipple rubbing and clit massaging I can expect from these books.

I think aGoT probably has the most sex scenes, but they never go away completely.

My friend became disinterested in the series in the middle of book 2 because of what he called 'the endless dwarf sex.'

Later books also have lesbo sex mhm mhm mhm

Seriously, reread those incest sex scenes and the Drogo & Dany horseback riding and finger ****, while picturing this man in your head.

"She took his hand and moved it down to the wetness between her thighs. "Yes", she whispered as she put his finger inside her."

Well to be fair to the guy, he was writing that book way back in the early 90s, so he was almost 20 years younger than he is in that pic.

Also, what you're talking about is one of the reasons this Wall Street Journal guy hates the show (having seen the first like 6? episodes).

The production has a satisfyingly brooding, ominous look and it’s possible to see the basic appeal for role-players and other fans of a realm that provides a limitless playing field for their own imaginations.

“Thrones” also has wolf pups, which is always cool. But then we’re back to the familiar favorites of the infantile:, e.g., spurting blood and gore, bastard sons, evil vixens, blond nymphets, quasilesbian action, crude talk among men about their private parts, incest, rough couplings and more random bare breasts than any other contender in the adolescent-boy-action-show contest this month.

I'm glad to see that the only negative reviews so far are by stupid people, or people who have no imagination and can't get immersed in something not set in real history. I do hope he is lying/exaggerating the "spurting blood and gore" though. I mean, there are gory parts to the story, but hopefully we're not looking at spartacus style fight scenes where a slash across the chest sends a pint of blood flying 10 feet into the air.

Yeah, it doesn't bother me, it's just a little funny sometimes I guess. I've avoided looking at screenshots from the show as much as I can, because I hate when images and renditions from film slowly creep their way into my imagination while reading a book. Already pissed that my image of Ned is being invaded by that dude from Lord of the Rings.
