Help Get Portal 2 Released Early - OVERCLOCK HAS BEGUN, Release Incoming!

I think getting a few hours shaved off is pretty damn cool myself. I do wonder though how is this going compared to how many people Valve expected to be taking part.

For a man who says he doesn't give a shit, despite knowing it's his phrasing and not the word use, you sure aren't good at letting it slide - you had to edit your post with the sole purpose of replying to me. Speaking of sore spots?
Actually I edited my post for a typo; I can't let typos slide. My reply to you was in the original post. Dude, it's vBulletin software and you have super moderator privileges; isn't your version of vB equipped to check original message vs. edited message? I accidentally typed "soft spot," like an idiot the first time around and didn't realize it until after stealth edit time was over. Go ahead and check it if you can; if not I suggest enabling that function as it's dead handy when it comes to moderating posts if the person has edited something out. I should know, part of my job is checking my company's vB.

Also my phrasing of the word "kid" really was slang in this instance. BTW this part of my message is edited; see if you can check it against the original.

Well, they had sales numbers. I'm not sure if they collect playtime numbers for non-Valve games.

Let what go? I'm just trying to be helpful. It's a handy moderation tip. Take it or leave it I guess, consider this current course of derailment routed.

Back to discussing PR stunts and marketing gimmicks.

The argument about it shaving 2 hours off the release is pointless. The ARG has been the most complex and detailed thing which all led to this point, do you think Valve will use it for the most anti-climatic purpose? Moaning cynical old men, geez.

They'll probably realize they screwed up some numbers and speed things up for them to avoid people getting angry.

It probably has to do more with promoting indie games than Portal 2. Why else would the ARG revolve so heavily around other developers' games? It is quite genius from a marketing perspective.

"We promote your games while at the same time you promote ours"

You're putting a lot of faith in Valve there, my friend.

I think they grossly overestimated how complex they needed to make the potato puzzles. None of them are remotely pushovers tbh, and it's the fact that the potato modifier is so low is probably what's causing the problem. They've made the levels all extremely challenging.

They'll probably realize they screwed up some numbers and speed things up for them to avoid people getting angry.

It's not so much anger as patience. I've come dangerously close to getting the Audiosurf Potato, but when you're rusty as hell at a game coming back to it 6 months on and basically being asked to achieve a near flawless score on a changing track is a huge time sink. Albeit I've got flu atm, I'd of expected to have gotten the gold after about 15 attempts. I've come close but it's still out of reach. Even with the best will in the world, the games not going to unlock on Sunday like everyone was hoping.

most anti-climatic

Coming back from my full day of work hoping that I would be playing Portal 2 the whole weekend, and getting third phase of an ARG instead. =(

I can only imagine the sound of frustrated disappointment coming from you. Something like "aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggggggg!"

I swear the release time hasn't changed since yesterday, even though we now have Aaaah! and 1, 2, 3 kick it:

http://www.gamingmasters.co.uk/portal/

Edit: as a matter of fact, I've just realised that it's going up according to that site, has anyone Got a more reliable source??

The one on that site is taking into account the current progress of all the other games and is about 15 hours ahead of where it should be, and it constantly adjusts when people stop playing a game.

The one of the official site is currently 2 and a half hours ahead of schedule

so lemme get this straight- will portal 2 only release early if all those games are finished or does the release time readjust for every set of finished computations?

You can see the time difference if you compare the first line of the 'glados textual output' to the main countdown. It's currently running at 2 and half hour's earlier to the original time. I presume if all the games 'computations' complete, the launch will take place - but no, not in time for anyone to actually spend their weekends playing the game they actually wanted to play...! Bit of a mixed blessing for the indie games there, I think.

still kinda confused- the countdown still says it'll be released on tuesday, so the early release only happens if all the games' computations are complete?

This may need more clarifying:

(1) Portal 2 will launch early based on the "Projected Launch" bar being set back each time a game is completed - this is solely if all progress bars have not been filled before the countdown ends, and will only push it back by about 45 mins per game.

(2) Portal 2 will be launched immediately should all the bars be filled (nigh impossibility at this rate, even with quadratic projection).

The bars will all be filled. Wait for the potato overclock. Stop worrying!

Potato overclock lol. This whole ARG makes me really hate potatoes.

I thought it was already proven that the potatoes are already boosting the rates?

Yeah the general consensus is that the rate of increase is directly proportional to the number of potatoes, but I think the hypothesis is that at that number the the rate is going to explode or double or something.

Ah, well that'd be very good. Really our only chance.

oh gawd, so this may mean we can play like Monday night?? I'd love that

It's barely being released early. There's still 86 hours left, or 3.6 days. Oh man, we're gonna save, what, a few hours? And all for the cost of a few additional games! Keep those CPUs running, guys!

To those of you saying, "It's just smart marketing, people will get to see what great games these small developers made, Valve is great for doing this, they're so nice to the indie community blah blah blah," god, you people are such suckers. Keep justifying those purchases. Again, I'm not saying any of those games aren't worth the money, but the reason they were purchased is just a low ploy, especially since, according to the current clock, PURCHASING THEM CHANGED NOTHING.

But hey, y'know. Enjoy audiosurf.

There's nothing low or underhanded about it. No one's being lied to. No one has been misled about how this works. People are buying good obscure games so they can get a game they want faster. If they had just released Portal 2 early instead of starting this, we still would've gotten it barely or insignificantly early. It's not a trick. Indie developers benefit and Valve benefit and we, even if it's insubstantial, benefit. It may be disappointing. It may be cheap, but if it gets people more amped for indie developers and Portal 2 than it would've otherwise, can you really blame them? This seems to me, though to a far less ridiculous degree, as silly as "Oh, it's wrong to sell hats and give the proceeds to charity because the company benefits from the disaster."

Wow, unless this whole thing greatly increases in its completion rate, we'll be lucky to have it released a couple of hours at most before the scheduled release time. Kinda defeats the purpose IMO...

I don't know about you but many people have been waiting for a Sequel for years! hours cut off the release time are much to be desired.

That's what I always think, and then realize in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't mean much. I'm not complaining about it being released a couple hours early (if it does), I'm just saying that this whole potato sack thing was kind of pointless.

This better be the best damn potato stew in the history of spuds.

The first two phases of the ARG were great, we got a ton of concept art and rejected box designs and stuff and it was fun playing the games to look for clues (also the Defense Grid recruitment was strangely exciting). But this whole "GLaDOS takes over Steam accounts, sends cryptic messages with no apparent point, needs rebooting" was thoroughly confusing and I don't see the point.

well DAMN , even a few hours earlier release is still A FEW HOURS EARLIER RELEASE so we wait :imu:
