HL2.net Member Wii Review Thread

im gonna play it today, my friends brother just bought it........how cool am i?

Acceptable answers are:

Cool as school
Wicked Cool
Pretty damn cool
Absolute Sh1thead

Absolute ****ing cool :E. How about a small review on the games you play please?

I won't be getting a Wii until SSB: Brawl comes out. Still, I'll be reading this thread. Also, a 5.5 on Gamespot for Red Steel means very little. I sure as hell don't trust GS for reviews. I think metacritic is a better place to look, and that's compiled 2 critic reviews (90 and 78) and an 8.6 from 9 user reviews.

Actually, scratch my last post..all the wii's are sold out...have to wait a couple weeks for one. That's ok..I'm not one of those people who camp out for 6 days waiting for a game system.

The only poor comments I've heard center around graphics power and control issues for Red Steel.

EDIT: What have you been hearing?

That's about as much as I've heard, the graphics, although they don't bother me, annoys me that (that I've heard) it is no better than a GC. I mean, this is the "next generation of consoles" I would of expected them to put a TINY bit more effort in to stop it from getting labeld as GC graphics all the time.

The game play is far superior to anything else though and that's what I bought it for, good graphics would just be a bonus.

I'm back at my house now and have it hooked up to my TV in here.

It's really beginning to grow on me. Using the Wiimote is almost as easy as moving a mouse. It takes a few hours to get used to and after that it's easy to navigate menus and such. The production value of this console is sexy (edit: rofl, I typed sexy instead of extremely) high. Everything is polished: from the menu animations to the walk through. They really cater to you, the consumer. Wii Sports has already gotten kind of old, and I wish I bought another game besides Zelda. I'm thinking I'm going to buy that doctor game. Wii Sports is a great game if you have more than one person playing; playing it alone makes you feel... silly. But, it is what it is: a free game.

Zelda so far has been good. I'm sort of disappointed at the lack of voice overs as it adds so much to the game in terms of immersiveness. The controls are easy, responsive and accurate as to what you're doing at the moment. The graphics are... well, lacking, but that's not why I bought a Wii.

The console itself is remarkably small. It's tiny. They said it's about three DVD cases big while I believe it's more like two. It takes up minimal space and looks classy, too.

EDIT: I just found out that you cannot go on the internet with the Wii unless you have a Wireless internet connection. If you are wired, then you have to buy an adapter which is currently not available. But, you know, that makes sense since nitrogen totally carries the internet better than copper wire.

Oh my god, can we not have a thread about anything without defaulting to the typical "vs." argument or "overrated" argument?

This place is starting to f*cking annoy me. Every thread is turning into the same damn thing.

May I be first to welcome you to the internet...

Ya' know, it was once called a series of tubes

Ah, here we are, I just had a long nap after 24 hours without sleep.

I camped out in front of target last night at 12:00 AM and was #13 in line. I tried to sleep, but it was like 30 degrees and it was on concrete, so I stayed up all the way to 7:15, when they handed out tickets. I got my ticket, went to starbucks and came back to the store. We all stood in line and got our wii...and guess how many copies of Zelda target had? exactley ZERO.

Well, that ticked me off a bit, so I just went to the next target and picked up my copy from a large pile.

By the time I got home I was about ready to sleep for several hours, but I wanted to get my money's worth and play zelda.

Here are my initial impressions of the Wii and zelda:

"Wow, this console is tiny!"

"These component cables are ugly!"

The entire thing looks like a retrofitted NES system, boxy and angled, with great big ugly cables, it felt very retro.

Plugging it in, I had some initial difficulty controlling the Wiimote. It's VERY sensitive, you see, so it ended up sensing all of my tiny hand movements until I just rested my hands on my knees and that solved the prolem.

I made a mii, a spiffy little representation of myself, and started up zelda.

My initial impressions of zelda:
Graphics are okay, but not anywhere near any of the promotional shots, at least not on my crappy TV

The speaker in the Wiimote is AWFUL. It distorts horribly, and makes it sound like someone shot a hole in an amp and ran gameboy audio through it. in fact, the speaker is so terrible it detracts from the immersion extremely, because having random distorted 8-bit noises come from your remote is kind of a distraction.

Wiimote gestures definatley feel tacked on. It took me a while to realize that I had to make broad sweeping gestures to have proper sword swings, as short flicks result in a stab or no swing at all. The new weapon system also takes alot of getting used to, as they've added another level of sophistication requiring you to equip an item to not one, but two slots.

Environment, design and music are quite excellent.

Charachter dialoge feels rather lame. I especially dislike the random japanese words people yell out from time to time.

On a whole, it feels pretty much like windwaker in most respects. It's not suprising, considering it is running off of the same engine.

Epona is very fast and hard to control.

Aiming takes some skill, because the wiimote is so accurate it's like trying to aim a sniper rifle without a scope. Nevertheless, once I got some skill I was able to pop off shots really quickly with my slingshot.

Water is nice, it feels very animated, but some of it looks a little low rez.

Cutting things while on the horse is AWESOME. It makes me feel like some kind of dragoon slicing off people's heads.

There are so many sidequests I don't even know where to begin.

I've played Zelda for a little while now and I think the controls are great. I can quickly snipe things with the slingshot, the sword controls feel good to me (flicking motions work just fine for me), and I like how you can quickly swap weapons between d-pad buttons.

Consoles are what friends are for :D
Only games I'll find worth playing are Zelda and SSB Brawl

He lives in Australia. That's the release date over there.

December 25th is Christmas. So I assume he pre-ordered it, but has to give it to his parents so they can give it to him for Christmas.

Sucks to be him.

Sure you're not sitting too close to your tv? Sitting too close will cause it to be over sensative I think.

Can't wait to get mine. Gotta wait till xmas before I can have it though. I'll give it a quick go on the 8th when it comes, but then I'll put it away.

I've just ordered my Gamecube Zelda. :D :D ;D Should be here on the 8th, but as it's with Play it could go anyway, so I might have it on the 7th or the 9th or even beyond that. I trust them, and I presume it will come that weekened. It's my birthday that week, so this is my main present. :)

I CAN'T GODDAMN WAIT.

Tell me, the people who've played it, what are the towns/villages/markets like? The civilised places, etc? They were always one the things I liked best about Zelda.

What are things like the world itself like? The night to day times, weather, etc?

Sorry to burst your bubble but the Gamecube version is out on the 15th of Dec is it not?

Play are pretty good though. Usually if you pre-order something you'll get it on the day. more often then not you get it earlier :)

Wii has been smashed!

L O L at those peoples faces!
Although I do hate to see cute things smashed, and the Wii does look cute :imu:
Now I want to kill those bastards for hurting the cute! :frown:

Yeah, the 15th is what I thought, but Play said the 8th so maybe they're just releasing it the same time as it normally? I haven't ordered the Wii version, before anyone says anything.

EDIT: Gonna post this again cuz no one will see it on the other page;

I play it for a few minutes and really wasnt too impressed.....i dunno, I guess im one of those graphics whores....the truck racing game was kind of fun with the remote, but like i said, graphics were almost the same as the gamecube.

Mine was actually a little twitchy and shaky when I first fired it up to the Wii Menu. Then I popped in Zelda and everything is smooth as silk now in-game and in the Wii Menu. I think it just had to kind of calibrate a little.

I just pre-ordered at about 6 stores to make sure I get one around Dec 8th. The first one to dispatch gets my money, hehe.

Just played zelda for a few more hours and I'm halfway through the first dungeon. My controls are suddenly now smooth and perfect, so I guess there must be some kind of automatic calibration system.

Man, Link is just badass in this version, I love how he spins his sword around when you target an enemy and how you can finish off the enimies by running them through.

Great gameplay guys, its like the perfect mix of Ocirana of Time, Majoras Mask and Windwaker.

I'm plugging my ears untill I can actualy get ahold of a copy for myself and play it.

PS. Whats the availability like? Are stores stocked up enough to not sell out (both Wii and Zelda)?

Glad to hear it!

Once question to you guys with Zelda. Do the NPC's in towns and stuff have lives? Like in MM people had places to be and things like that. I know there is no "time" in this game, but there is a day/night cycle.

What are the side quests like?

Really hyped for this! :D

There were zero zeldas at three of the stores I went to, but a target in the middle of nowhere had something like 35, and thats where I got mine. The wiis definatley sell out in a hurry, but not nearly as fast as any other console I've seen. I waited in line for 8 hours, and I was number 11, and the last person in line to get a wii only had to wait for 30 minutes. Zelda is very difficult to find though, most stores are sold out because of preorders

Glad to hear it!

The NPCs do alot of standing around doing nothing, similar to OOT. I havent been to a major town yet, but the villaige and the outlying forests definatley do not have NPC "lives" They simply stand in front of their houses with a blank stare on their faces waiting for you to talk to them.

There is no "time" yet, and there is no day/night cycle, probably because I haven't entered the field yet.

The sidequests are on the order of OOt, if not slightly more complicated. For instance, a villager might ask you to get something done for them, but to do that you need a certain item, and to get that item you need to do something for another villager, but to do that you need another item, and it becomes a long chain until you get a piece of heart or something similar.

Ahh right cheers. Sounds a lot like OOT. Which isn't bad. Thanks :)

I ROCK at Tenis. Out of me and my 4 friends who were playing the Wii I was the only one to never loose a match.
I SUCK with the bat in baseball but I'm a fine pitcher.
I ROCK at boxing. Boxing is very very fun.
Golf not really good at.
Bowling err not my thing.

Anyway lets get to where it counts. Zelda.
F*cking awesome. That's all I can possible say.

I just got to where you turn into the Wolf form and I'm kinda stuck (I only spent like 3 minutes trying to find what to do though).

If your in the Cell, attack the object on the right side when facing that girl.

Top right of the cell when facing out of the cell. Theres a hole there but theres something blocking it. You just gotta attack it and it'll break.

I'm painfully waiting for the Australian Wii release. Although I did get to play the Wii on two previous occasions.

I'm not a Zelda fan at all, the only Zelda game I ever got into was Link's Awakening on the GBC. However after romping through Zelda TP on the Wii I was very impressed with the game. The controls are what sold me, it just feels so good to slice things with the motion of my hand. It's very satisfying to play.

Needless to say I've pre-ordered Zelda along with Wii Play and my Wii :)

Dissatisfied with gfx? Why do you think the damn things so cheap? I too am waiting patiently for the aussie release.

I love the Wii so far. Wii Sports is really fun and i've only played single player, even though it's somewhat shallow this game is bound to be a lot of fun with other people.

Im only 2.5 hours into Zelda, but so far the story is fantastic, I really like the cut scenes. Swinging the remote as a sword is very easy and fun but doesn't add that much. The real benefit of the control is the aiming, I remember seeing demo's where the aiming looked incredibly hard and shaky. It's not like this AT ALL, it's extremely accurate and precise.

Whoever asked about the availability of Zelda, well at my Target we had 70 Wii's and I know that each person was able to get a copy of Zelda.

Hmmm. :( Disapointing. Still, lets hope this changes when you get to a major town and when you get into the 'field' :D

LOL.

You know, I find those peope incredible idiots whenever the first insult to their mind is, "He needs to get laid"

Like that has anything to do with his destruction of a Wii. Yeah, he's destroying hardware cause he hasn't had sex in a few months.

???

You know fine it's the mating call of a virgin Raz.

woulda been funny if he smashed the last one
