.. the world's global superpower? 50 years? 100 years? 500 years? Forever? (that last option is highly, highly unlikely as no powerful civilization has ever lasted permanently).

And what nation would replace it? And would its replacement be any of the existing countries right now, or some newly formed one? Or will we see a return to several nations in perpetual competition, none that more powerful than the other?

I say we're good for another 20-75 years, depending on how things go. Then we will be surpassed by China and the European Union.

I forsee three superpowers actually, USA, China and the EU on the near horizon, and hopefully we can all stay friends.

we'll go to war against the EU and china then we'll all blow ourselves up then the middle east will become the next superpower eventually make a world government which will then be overthrown by the australians in 50 years. then martians will come and eat every last human since we were fighting to much, but squirrels will throw acorns at the aliens thus making em go home and then there will be a 1000 years of peace with squirrels reigning over the world. by the end of the 1000 years squirrels would have evolved into flying monsters with 8 eyes, each shooting out lasers, and they'll have 7 feet that have saw blades for toes. and the martians will come back with giant acorns that are fitted with super duper nuclear bombs and they will blow up the monster squirrels along with the whole planet earth. then a dissappointed flying spaghetti monster GOD thingy will make a new earth with peaceful noodles as its inhabitants and all would be good for a long time, then the sun will blow up the solar system(also the martians living in the sewers of the earth.)

The Republic of Korea and the Great Nation of Han shall rule teh world! BOW DOWN, INFIDELS! ONWARD TO THE FRONTLINES!

The soundest theory so far!

I think everything was pretty much set when [the greatest] countries stopped warring for territory. The USA will be a superpower until someone comes in and takes our land from us, and that will be impossible unless our military is somehow decommissioned. The only alternative is a full-scale nuclear assault, but that is so unlikely it's not worth even mentioning.
If we were put into a defensive position by an axis of Eastern nations I'm sure we would have no trouble securing the entire Western Hemisphere in preparation. It would be the Revolutionary War all over again, 100 fold.

rather simplistic, don't you think? You're not taking into account for any social, political, and economic changes -- and environmmental calamities -- that might take place in a time span of.... I said, in forever. As in until the end of the universe. The world and power balance alone have greatly changed in less than two centuries alone.

I'm sure the Romans had a hard time imagining what it would be like without Rome, too.

Of course, each generation cannot accurately think beyond its own current experiences, so maybe whatever predictions we come up with will be terribly inaccurate.

Seeing as we pay other countried for their smartest people, I dont see The US losing rank any time soon

a handful of guys with box cutters brought the US to their knees ..it wont take all that much to do it again ..the US is vulnerable because your ego has made you blind to the danger around you (that you self perpetuate) ...but your downfall wont come on the battlefield or through a loss of military might ...no it will be the economy that finally does you in

I can already imagine the apocalyptic future of the US... buildings lying in ruins, no electricity, dark smoke, people huddling in the cold, and the great Taeguekgi waving proudly in the air with the battle flag of the ROK Para-Infantry Divisions...

Wait, that goes for every other nation in the world too.... hmm...
:p

A load of Asians falling from the sky and doing TaeKwonDo to everyone as soon as they land? I think South Korea would have their hands full with North Korea, let alone the mighty British people :cheese:.

But i would have to agree with Stern, when America falls, it'll fall due to the economy, not any sort of military takeover - there is a bigger chance that there'll be an American civil war than a foreign power invading. The next big super power though will undoubtably be China and probably India. Lots and lots of cheap labour, a lot of foreign money and corporations being invested in both countries...

I imagine globalization will take effect and it won't matter whose big dog anymore. Several nations will be big dog, the US and China probably being the most powerful. Perhaps if the Middle East decides to merge into one nation. I don't really see the US falling in my lifetime or even our children's lifetime. Our parents have left us a scarred world and we will repair it.

Denmark and Norway are both in NATO, so out best hope of invading is Finland first. Belarus might also be a good idea. Then we create nuclear weapons and strike down on Europe. They will surrender before our might. We ally ourself with North Korea who will take care of Asia and Africa. Cuba will take the Americas. Then we betray NK and Cuba and Sweden become masters of the world. It cannot fail.

On a serious note, I think that China and India will get richer, but I don't see The west losing much of its might any time soon. Then, in maybe 100 years, two greats block will have appeared, The West (North America & Europe) and The East (China, India & Southeast Asia). These will co-exist for a long time, I don't think there will ever be a war. The ME, Africa and S. America will remain in poverty for a long time.

Well... 'down to our knees' is relatively speaking. It doesn't take much for a country to mourn a loss of their citizens due to an aggressive attack. But taking down one building, even an important one for trade like the WTC was, or military matters like the pentagon was, doesn't bring a country to its knees. We still had our military, and it's not like our morale was busted so much we would be unable to defend ourselves.

We have millions of buildings, and we have hundreds of millions of citizens. One building, and a few thousand of those citizens may bring a tear to our eyes, to any country's eye... but it will be a far stretch to consider it crushed and on its knees reeling for the next finishing blow.

they effectively crippled your economy which is still being affected to this very day. 9/11 proved that an attack on your economy does far more damage than meeting you on the open battlefield. 9/11 also proved your military might was completely ineffectual at keeping your country safe from terrorism .. now that a flaw has been discovered in the US' armor I'm sure there are groups with a bone to pick with the US who've taken notice

while 9/11 may not have been brought the US to it's knees figuratively it sure as hell did psychologically

That's because too many stupid people adopt a false sense of security, thinking they are immune to external influences in their life. We're already being crushed by our own internal problems, but people kept thinking that we were safe from the outside coming in.

People and their stupid statements of, "It couldn't happen here... nobody could have imagined." Well... the thing is, you'd have to be pretty stupid to think something like that couldn't happen. The best you can do is hope it doesn't happen.

And Stern, of course the military failed to respond. The weapons used were full of citizens, and used by from all accounts, citizens. That's why they call it unconventional warfare... because it's outside the boundaries of the norm, and completely avoids the whole 'military vs military' concept of the past. History has proven that guerilla tactics often work well, because it's so hard to defend against something when you can't see it sprawling before you.

they believe it couldnt happen here because they dont understand why it could happen in the US ..frankly I'm surprised it doesnt happen more often ..saying "no one could have imagined it" is the tell tale sign that they're living in a fantasy world where the US is beyond moral reproach

all I'm saying is that it doesnt take nuclear weapons and a shit load of ground troops to make your knees buckle ..and yes I'm aware of the effectiveness of guerrilla tactics as US history has proven time and again how effectual it is ..both for and against the US

India will be teh next suparpowa, cuz every fifth human is an Indian. Plus, we're not commies like those chinese fellas.

The US is already in a truck load of debt as I understand it, the only way you can keep an economy like that afloat for much longer is by maintaining strong currencey and monitary flow through the system, aslong as the dollar continues to be exchanged around key parts of the globe and plenty is flowing through the system, (petro dollar recycling etc) then it'll just about keep it's head above water.

I don't see any reason to believe the EU would become a superpower. Firstly, it isn't even a nation, and secondly, liberal mindsets don't promote economic or military might.

FDR, a liberal, made the draft. isn't that military might?

The US has over 8.6 trillion dollars in debt (source), and half a trillion a year in export deficit (you import ca 550 billion dollars worth more than you export). The economic growth wont last forever, I'm telling you.

We'll see, but my money says it will all come to a head in 2077...

75-100 years. I just hope it doesn't happen within my lifetime.

The Dutch will rule the world once more!
"It is useless to resists!" :p

hope has nothing to do with it ...it's inevitable, it will happen ..it is already happening

If you guys wanna pwn us you better get ON IT.

unfortunately you're already doing a better job of pwning yourselves than any nation could ever dream to do without an outright invasion

I just hope that the US doesn't collapse until around 2010.
