Knowing Carmack, he probably coded a near-identical version of DOSBOX from scratch in his sleep and that's that they're using
They don't need permission to use the program if its under GPL, they can use it AND modify the code if they want. What they cant do is remove the license or change the license to something else. Any dosBox code must remain GPL'd with the license intact.Valve/iD are using a freeware(?) program on Steam without the permission of the creators of said program.

They will distribute whatever they want, THEY PAY THE BILLS, you and I don't.
Nope you just don't know history about this kid. But thanks, whore.
Sure, but my statement didn't say otherwise.Didn't I cover this already? Modifications to said GPL code must also be supplied.
They just released these on Steam.
oh what, as if they did that!
did they really think they could get away with such a stupid thing like this?
The games that use DOSBOX btw run terrible. I'd rather use the program separately so I can change the core to dynamic and increase the cpu usage.
Not true. Dosbox is great. Maybe you need to adjust the cpu cycles?
Any reaction from valve yet?
I feel more than confident in their hands that they are doing the right thing.
Hmmmm, let the companys sort all there legal crap out themselves.
Yes, if you want to play multiplayer. Doom without multiplayer? HERESY!
Now, if iD had made Windows ports of these games, I'd be ready to put down my hard-earned. The exact same code that they released years ago? Pass.
Gargantou, and indeed everyone else here: What is this?
I'd say they've fixed the immediate problem.
Since you bought Doom Hexen or Heretic, try playing them on http://www.doomsdayhq.com/. It's an updated engine using the assets from the original games. I'd say it feels like playing doom with quake 1 graphics.
Who modified it, ID, Valve or someone else? Isnt it possible that the source code is out there?New GPL violation!!!!
The included dosbox.exe is a modified version of dosbox.
(it requires steam.dll to function)
They do this without supplying the source of this modified version of dosbox. (which is required for GPL programs)
This is getting really interresting
If they did it remotely properly any useful code would have been kept secret and not need to be released.I'm waiting for the first people to ask on the steam forums for the modified dosbox code. (which would contain the steam login code)
*graps popcorn*
