Id Software and Valve violating GPLs!

Knowing Carmack, he probably coded a near-identical version of DOSBOX from scratch in his sleep and that's that they're using

Carmack is an engine guru he couldn't jump into the world of hardware emulation that quickly.

Valve/iD are using a freeware(?) program on Steam without the permission of the creators of said program.
They don't need permission to use the program if its under GPL, they can use it AND modify the code if they want. What they cant do is remove the license or change the license to something else. Any dosBox code must remain GPL'd with the license intact.

Didn't I cover this already? Modifications to said GPL code must also be supplied.

They will distribute whatever they want, THEY PAY THE BILLS, you and I don't.

No they don't you can't get away with everything and hell I'm going to take this for a ride. What if Steam started distributing kiddy pron sure it's their servers but they just broke some serious laws. Valve have a nice hunky piece of self protective crap in their TOS but beyond that they cannot get away with everything. A virus would be another example if that was to happen Valve would be held liable.

btw did you forget about the part where we the consumer give them money? Money which helps increase their profit margins and run said servers?

Nope you just don't know history about this kid. But thanks, whore.

Ah so your holding the grudge. I know many people who hold the grudge.

They just released these on Steam. Why not wait and see if there is a response next week...
(I'm not saying to stop contacting ID/Valve of the issue)

Just an update for you guys, the creator and lead developer of DOSBox have emailed both Valve and iD requesting them to re-release/update the files with the licenses, when I get more info I will post it here.

They just released these on Steam.

Funny how all this could have been avoided if they simply kept that one little file. Look I'm sure this will be all fixed up and many people are asking "Why should it matter?" Well it matters because you cannot let some company get away with breaking the law and act like it's okay. Of course the thing about that is we do everyday, but your on a gaming forum it should matter a tad much more to you.

To quote a friend of mine.

oh what, as if they did that!

did they really think they could get away with such a stupid thing like this?

Am I the only one who finds this oddly ironic? Valve is all up against piracy, and then they comply with the legal (or illegal) equivalent.

Hopefully it will be sorted out soon.

The games that use DOSBOX btw run terrible. I'd rather use the program separately so I can change the core to dynamic and increase the cpu usage.

Not true. Dosbox is great. Maybe you need to adjust the cpu cycles?

Any reaction from valve yet?

The supplied version of Dosbox is stripped down. He meant he'd rather run the proper version available on their site.

I feel more than confident in their hands that they are doing the right thing.

What part of GPL licensed code in use without GPL license present don't you get? This has jack all to do with ID's deal with Valve.

Gargantou, and indeed everyone else here: What is this?

I'd say they've fixed the immediate problem.

Hmmmm, let the companys sort all there legal crap out themselves. All this sueing culture is just anoying. Honestly I don't really care if iD missed crediting some people of the list or whatever. Yes its bad but honestly there for the company to deal with. I just play there games. Its not like iD are killing starving children in africa or anything.

My above post is of my installation of Hexen on Steam, which I just bought.

I recently downloaded the latest version of DOSBox which ran like a dream on all the old DOS games I tried with it, but when I ran Hexen on Steam after I bought it, I was shocked how slow and clunky it was. Also, there was no way of using the Setup program that comes with Hexen.

But I figured, why not copy the Hexen folder from Steam and put it elsewhere, like a general DOS folder in the C: root? I tried this and ran my own installation of DOSBox, and not only was it far smoother, but I was in full control of everything.

Since it seems the old id Software games are installed in a Steam folder called "common", surely means it is not illegal to copy them elsewhere?

Erm, every none-Valve/Source game is installed into Common as far as I know.

Anyway, nice screen, it seems Valve has updated the releases to include copying.txt!

Hmmmm, let the companys sort all there legal crap out themselves.

Hint: Dosbox is not made by a company.

Wouldn't have killed for either ID or Valve to donate a little money towards the project as a kind gesture at the end of day.

Yes, if you want to play multiplayer. Doom without multiplayer? HERESY!

Now, if iD had made Windows ports of these games, I'd be ready to put down my hard-earned. The exact same code that they released years ago? Pass.

Wait you can't play MP without them? I might pass now. :|

Since you bought Doom Hexen or Heretic, try playing them on http://www.doomsdayhq.com/. It's an updated engine using the assets from the original games. I'd say it feels like playing doom with quake 1 graphics.

Hmmm...another possible reason to delay getting this on Steam.

*strokes imaginary beard*

lol... We're not really foaming at the mouths here Absinthe.

And, a company distributing something bad is indeed partially responsible whether it was their fault or not. This is common knowledge.

Like for example in an episode of The Office, an obsene watermark was put on the paper they were selling at the factory. The boss isn't responsible for a factory worker putting the watermark on but he still has to apologize and may even resign.

Valve maybe should have some people do quality checks on what they are distributing. Couldn't have been that hard to spot that DOSBox was being used and wonder if proper procedures were taken to use it legally.

Strange how they overlooked that. I have pretty much all these games on disk somewhere anyway, and I think even charging $10 is kind of outrageous really, considering it's not hard to get a copy for free or next to nothing whatsoever.

My point still stands, Vegeta.

This was, in all likeliness, a misunderstanding of the GPL. Valve might be legally responsible to a degree, but this whole mindset of "LOL VALVE PIRACY IRONY" shit and acting like they were trying to cornhole the little guy is just juvenile and ridiculous. And as a personal annoyance, I found the drug trafficking analogy to be idiotic.

I hate faulty analogies.

So that file was there since the release? Great!

Edit: Noticed the reply on previous page, shame on you Valve!

Valve updated Steam to include the missing text files. I'm eager to see what announcement they make this week about it.

So every game using DosBox now has the Copyright.txt and Authors.txt files in the common folders?

I use dosbox all the time and I hope it's not true that id and valve stole dosbox from them. :(

New GPL violation!!!!

The included dosbox.exe is a modified version of dosbox.
(it requires steam.dll to function)

They do this without supplying the source of this modified version of dosbox. (which is required for GPL programs)

This is getting really interresting

Who modified it, ID, Valve or someone else? Isnt it possible that the source code is out there?

I don't know who modified it.
Somebody who knows how to interface with the steam login and online check code.

This might get real nasy (maybe steams login and online check code should be released as well under GPL.) (This is speculation, I don't know the GPL that well.)

oh god somebody most stop these atrocious violations.

So many god damn technicalities.

I'm waiting for the first people to ask on the steam forums for the modified dosbox code. (which would contain the steam login code)

*graps popcorn*

If they did it remotely properly any useful code would have been kept secret and not need to be released.

AFAIK the GPL isn't that friendly.

[speculation]
GPL requires you to post any modification. The fact that they might have hidden in a dll doesn't change this. This would place the steam.dll under GPL as well.
[/speculation]
