Now:
If 0.999...=1
then
1.888...=2

But alas it doesn't so therefore
0.999.... =/ 1

But I think it's not correct just to say
0.999... = 1
because it isn't 1, even if you go on writing nines forever.

As far as I know you have to write
lim 0.999... = 1
which is correct.

(But I'm not sure if what I wrote is correct.

lim means limit. What it says is what the value is going to be at infinity.

I have to learn about this for my math exam this Monday. Wish me luck. It's a bit more complicated though.

0.999... = 1 on a calculator only because it dosen't have enough space to store all the nines, so it rounds it.

I think the reason that people have trouble accepting this is that they think the statement is something that it isn't. I could write any number of 9s after 0.9 but it would still be less than 1. 0.999.. = 1 is true with an infinite number of 9s.

we can express 1 as 1/1, 9/9, 6^0, therefore, also 0.99999...
It is a well-known FACT

When people say 0.999...., they mean 0.999... with an infinite number of nines. So what you're saying is correct in that 0.99 and 0.9999 are exactly those values, but 0.99... with an infinite number of nines is equal to 1 in all but its presentation.

example:

You are not suitable to study Maths. Maths always seems to be ridiculous and non-sense. It does. It is so abstract that it cannot be always applied to reality life. For example, what is root 2? or simply, what is infinity? what is sufficiently large? What is topology? What is vector? What is 6-dimension? what is ln2-dimension? What is cos^-1=395? What is pi? What is e? What is generalized abstract non-sense? What is Calabi-Yau manifold? When you compare of that, 0.99999=1 seems not that absurd.

In short, 0.99999 = 1.
