If 0.999...=1 then does 1.888...=2?

Why?

anyways, this is not a suitable way duduce to the answer.

Uh.... can you actually devide at all?

3.5555555555555555555555555555555555555555555..... = 3.66666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666... and thus everything = infinity if you even start counting (1.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000... actualy = 1.11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111...)

liez

3.555.. = 3.6
3.666... = 3.7

EDIT: actually thats not true either, I think

The fate is 0.5555. end with 5, not the number 9 which carry one decimal place to two decimal places.(3.5555...555 is not 3.555...559) Yours is an entirely different case. If you fail to apprehend this simple statement, please bang your head against the wall.

I actually know that but I'm an asshole and started spamming random shit.

Okay, you banged your head too much. See a doctor before you say any more things stupider .

apprehend it?

Stop that statement! It's getting away!

I guess you don't know apprehend can be used as comprehend. I am not joking, check out the dictionary instead. I am correct. Since you are a so-called super moderator, I must show respect to you, rather than taunt you with ignorance.

Some people just don't appreciate good humour.

No ffs, I'm tired as poo anyway, you know when you get tired and do random shit. Now my ceretonin levels increased randomly lolz

Can I just comment on how much this thread title would make any mathematician cringe? Seriously, what the hell? :|

I don't appreciate you make fun of me. I laughed, though.

I cringed.

I mean, my God. IT IS NOT A DIFFICULT CONCEPT.

the biggest irony is that solaris was probably trying to appear smart with his 'discovery'

Indeed, it is not. The answer is palpable all the time. Just people's minds are too trivial and superficial. They don't have a concept of infinite series.

Surely he does. After reading the second reply, he must be finding a hole for him to hide in, or taking an oxygen cylinder then dive underneath water, so no one can see him.

Yeah its not difficult, its just that people can't get the concept.

Which makes it difficult......

Mr Stabby said:
0.999... = x
10x = 9.999...

10x-x = 9x
9.999...-0.999... = 9

9x = 9
x = 1

The problem with what you're doing is that 9.999... - 0.999... doesn't equal 9. It equals 8.999... Because when you multiply by 10 you are moving the decimal over. You now have infinity minus one numbers following the decimal place

the doubting 0.999... = 1 isn't the cringe worthy part

making a topic thinking .999... x 2 = 1.888... is.

That's what I meant, yeah. :cheers:

Oh, shut up. We all make mistakes.

∞-1=∞

you realise you just used solaris. and smart in the same sentence?

Damn, you laughed at him first. I followed. Why all of you guys are pointing at me?

But I think it's not correct just to say
0.999... = 1
because it isn't 1, even if you go on writing nines forever. ;)
As far as I know you have to write
lim 0.999... = 1
which is correct.

(But I'm not sure if what I wrote is correct. :D )

Generally speaking, in maths 0.999 is not equal to one. But if you have a limit on the amount of decimal places you can have (say two decimal places), then it would go to the nearest round number.

Example:

0.456 -> 0.46 (2 d p)

0.454 -> 0.45 (2 d p)

However in everyday life (measurements, currency), there is a limit as to how far decimal numbers can go. Cash, for instance can only as far as two decimal places (Not counting stock markets or credit card transactions).

Shit happens. :p

It was an amusing error, but some of this is borderline mean flaming, which isn't called for and won't be tolerated :p so we can chuckle but how about we keep the 'solaris is an idiot' stuff off the boards?

ahhh. We mean 0.999... with infinite 9.
