If gabe/valve had not admitted to the leak

If Gabe Newell and Valve did not admit that there was a leak wouldn't that have decreased the publicity? Only after the announcement did most people believe and actually started downloading the source..

If they remained quiet about this I'm sure it wouldn't be this bad..

Its not like George Lucas went to every star wars fan site and announced.. "OMGOMGOM!!! W3 haz been H4xored!!! lololoklol!!!one!!11"
when his Episode 1/2 was leaked.

Gabe wouldn't, I bet right now he was in like tears as someone leaked all of VALVe's blood and sweat into that engine, to be released to millions in under a day. I think Gabe did the best step, I hope he got the FBI too.

i got up today went to planethalflife and it said it was leaked, i went to onther site, said it was leak, 5 others completly differant to each other and they all have the same news... news sure gets up there fast when its wrong

Well, Gabe knows that there are ALOT of people in the community, and they will be glad to help Valve out in catching whoever did it.
He made the right decision.

After 3 houres of looking at it and asking programmers who knew there shit what they thought it was, I Knew it was real and so did the people who are now getting it to work.

Gabe did the right thing, by confirming it and asking for help....

I guess it was the right thing.. most of the times the hackors can't help but brag about their conquests.. and thats when they usually get caught.

However, is catching the criminal more important than containing the leak?

A) Release HL2 and just patch it very fast (dreams).
B) Scrap it a year redo Source and Hope it doesn't happen again.
C) Get the guy(s) that did this and keep them in valve Smacking them every day with cow prod things.
D) Take over the world with nukes and stuff (yes im rambling).
E) Continue as planned.

The engines there, but very little content (just a few weapons and monster code). The map editor is present in the code so you could make a playable version out of it, but it wouldn't be HL2, just a game useing source(Oh the irony).
