Kick ass huh?

That's nearly the same as I have except:

Athlon64 3000
Gigabyte k8ns pro (nforce3)

Oh, and a 22" (20" viewable) monitor that does 100hz at 1600x1200.

BTW, the x800xt arrived yesterday. Man, I don't know what makes the BF:V engine so CPU bound. It's performance during high activity is very frustrating. And what's with the laggy feel on the mouse? You'd think an uber-vidcard would overcome these problems. It's that damn physics engine that the game uses that makes all the infantry player movements feel sloppy. I hope that BF2 has a tighter infantry control like other FPS's.

Just had my system painted for $650 :)...maybe I will get a picture of it sometime...
P4 3.2 GHz Extreme Edition
Abit IC7-MAX3 Mobo
1GB Corsair DDR 400 Ram
Audigy 2 ZS Soundcard
Radeon X800 (Just bought, using my old BFG 5700 FX for my 2nd PC)
Cooler Master Wave Master Case
2 400GB Hitachi Deskstars (I use this PC as my "TiVo" as well as gaming PC)
and my favorite..2 Raptor harddrives...love these (thanks for the recommendations Maximum PC)
All this is water cooled (even the harddrives) ...blew my first power supply when I hooked the system all up, slight miscalculation in the power requirement :p

Why didn't you go for the xt? Seems you have the money.

I have a Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz,
512 DDR MB ram and Radeon 9600 PRO(I think it is).

But I plan to upgrade to:
Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz 533 Mhz
ASUS Radeon 9600XT 128MB DDR, AGP8X, DVI, VIVO
MSI 651M-L SOCKET 478 SIS 651, 3PCI/0ISA/0CNR 2DDR,1AGP4X AT(For my CPU)

At around Christmas time, I'm not to worried about getting Half-Life 2 ( I'm pretty sure that Christmas may be the time when Half-Life has gone gold for a few days) late, my eyes are really set on Prince of Persia 2.
And I can wait because school is starting and I plan to get good grades because no game currently interests me.

But what I want to know is, at around Christmas time, I'll obviously have a(n):
Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz 533Mhz
MSI 651M-L SOCKET 478 SIS 651, 3PCI/0ISA/0CNR 2DDR,1AGP4X AT
ASUS Radeon 9600XT 128MB DDR, AGP8X, DVI, VIVO
512 MB DDR ram
Samsung SyncMaster 955DF
And a crappy sound card.
But can I run the game at 1600x1200 with good graphics and turn stuff like dynamic lighting, shadows, FSAA, AA and etc... off and get good framerates?

I think that you could leave the stuff on and still gte good framerate. FOr me good framerate is more than 25fps. Oh and i don't see the point of upgrading from a 9600 pro to 9600XT, it won't make to much difference.

I'm hoping for around 55+ FPS, is that possible?

Well currently I haven't played half life 2 (duh). But I read a year ago when the news came out that halflife 2 was going to be 24-bit and nvidia cards don't support 24-bit, running a geforcefx 5900ultra in dx9 mode on hl2, would only run the game at 25 fps,
Maximum PC Magazine said:
This is much less than ATI's current mid-range card, the 9600pro
So, I'm guessing you won't get 55+fps with either of the cards when playing in dx9 mode, but you'll get a nice enough framerate. After all the 9600xt is "prefered graphics" fro hl2, so it would run the game smoothly, and the 9600pro isn't that much slower. Just upgrade ur cpu, i think it will make the most difference, since the cpu is the one who calculates the physics in hl2, and that's huge for the game. I'd say to at least 2.4 ghz. 2.4ghz is the max for a 533mhz mobo, if you have an 800mhz one, you can go higher. How much ram u got? You should have at least 512, i have 768.

What if I had:
MSI GFX FX5900XT-VTD128, VIVO, DDR, DVI, TV-OUT, RETAIL
Intel P4 / 2.8 GHz 533 Mhz
MSI 651M-L SOCKET 478 SIS 651, 3PCI/0ISA/0CNR 2DDR,1AGP4X AT
512 DDR MB ram(Already have that)
I might upgrade to that instead.

My rig

Pentium 4 3,0GHz HT (800MHz FSB)
512MB DDR RAM Dual Channel (will upgrade to 1024MB soon)
ATI Radeon 9800 XT

Hope this is enough. :Þ

I just upgraded my motherboard to take full advantage of 8x AGP cards. But I am having trouble with setting it up, so I might have to exchang it for a less alien one

2.8ghz aint bad, he could just bump up to 3 ghz ;)

My previous vote (I guess it will play HL2 acceptably..) was before I replaced almost every part in my PC.

I went from an Athlon 1.1GHz system with 768MB of PC133 RAM to an Athlon64 3500+ system with 1GB of Dual Channel PC3200 RAM. I also had noise problems with my last PC, so I moved to one of Lian Li's quiet PC cases and a much less noisy 460W PSU. The only parts I kept are the sound card, the 80GB HD (in addition to the new 120GB SATA HD), and the Radeon 9500 Pro (even that will be gone in a month or two... to be replaced by either an X800XT or a 6800 Ultra, probably the former unless it gets spanked in HL2).

The difference is... wow. It looks better, it runs a lot faster, it's not nearly as noisy, and it cost several hundred dollars less than my last PC did at the time (even if I factor in the X800XT that I haven't bought yet and the few parts I carried over).
