I'd say he's close to minimum. More RAM and a better CPU would be good.

Meh, mediums fine for me.

I havn't got the cash for an upgrade at the mo, and if I did get anything, it would be more RAM.

What's the 9600 pro on? 128 mb?

Im buying a new pc soon, it'll be ...
AMD Barton XP 3200+
Gig of DDR400 RAM
9800 Iceq Pro (the card with the big cooling thing on it)

Now, im just wondering, how long (with the X800 cards coming avaliable) the 9800 pro will last me, it's got so cheap now im worried about how long the card will be able to handle the latest games at high/medium graphics?
Or will the x800 XT be worth the extra £250, for the longevity?
If anyone can help, that'd be great!

You mean you're going to go buy a card "JUST IN CASE" it doesn't hold up? Dude... You got the next best card on the market so why would you need to get the best?

Wait until your card ACTUALLY becomes outdated.

Btw, the Barton XP 3000-3200+ have gotten pisspoor reviews, you shoulda gotten intel or Athlon 64.

2800+ (clocked at 2.3)
1 gig-o-ram
9800 pro (with vga cooler attached, overclocked at 414/353)
KEYBOARD AND MOUSE (in the hl2 min spec :))

bring it awn valve.

pentium 75
8mb memory
matrox mystique & voodoo 3dfx (with crossover cable)
soundblaster
2x cd drive
turbo button

am i only one seeing this thread being a 5 page list of computer stats? IMO this should be in the hardware forum.

not tryin to be harsh on that, just speaking my mind.

dito.

p.s. my computer may be slower than all of yours but my penis is longer and fatter, so there... :naughty:

Built this in early 2003 in anticipation of HL2/Doom3:

P4 2.6c @ 3.0
1024MB PC2100 DDR (oc 133MHz -> 150)
ATI AIW9700 Pro
SB Audigy2
Logitec Z640 5.1 speakers
19" Flat screen CRT Trinitron

Have an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer on order to try and get a bit more out of the 9700Pro. I don't expect full details but hopefully 1024x768 with most details on.

only a vid card

Just a Asus v9999 ultra GF6800 and than i can play all the games of 2004/2005 in full detail.

amd 2400+(oc 2700+)
a7n8x
1024mb 400ddr ram
ati 9800pro
surround 5.1

Two systems...

XP2100+ (1.73 GHz) @ 1.95 GHz
512 MB PC3200 at 195 MHz (stupid Asus A7N8X rev1.3 grr)
Radeon 9600 256 MB

(main system)
P4 2.4GHz @ 3.0 GHz
512 MB PC4000 at 250 MHz
Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB (flashed from the old school 9800 non-pro's before ATI realized they were getting gyped and stopped making them  )

Both should be fine for both Half-Life 2 and Doom 3. Yay, it's going to be a fun freshman year in college =).

You know when we open that settings menu for the first time we're all gonna be like....this is the place we've talked about for a year and a half...and here i am....about to actually set it up.

My purpose for my upgrade WAS HL2. So that's a definite yes.

Look at sig for specs.

Hi

I have this spec machine and money is extremely tight at the moment so I can't really go upgrading.
Funny thing is when HL2 was coming out back in sept ages ago before it got delayed I upgraded to this machine for it.... and whats upsetting is now its coming out I don't think I be able to run it in res 1024*768 everything high and AA/FSAA off. If i cant run it like that then I dout i play it till I can upgrade which I never know when will be as I'm on benefits atm with alot trouble in my personal life.

Anyway here is my spec please let me know if it is capable for what I want
XP3000 333fsb
1gig pc32000 ram
radeon 9700 Pr0 128meg

Thanks

waz

Waz, your system should run the game fine without AF/FSAA at max details.

Thanks

Thanks for fast reply, Honestly greatful!

You sure about this as people sling things at me saying I need a X800.. man I have to be able to run HL2 max its only thing keeps me happy to be honest lately.

Not sure if my system could handle DOOm3 though, is it true HL2 is not so graphic demanding than doom3?

An X800 would be ideal, but there's no reason you shouldn't run 40+ FPS without FSAA/AF at max details..

I can run FarCry at ultra high details without FSAA at 4xAF on 1024x768x32 and average 30+ FPS.. and I have a Radeon 9700 (although, it is OCed to a 9700 Pro).
I can't imagine HL2 being more demanding than FC. So, I'd say it's reasonable to expect 40+ FPS.

/me waits to test with the CS:S beta

I can run fc at max everything except shadows. =/

ok

Ok Thanks guys, am greatful.

Just x800 is a big leap from 9700 pro so telling me best to get a x800 does not make my worries go.
tee hee

Thanks though

Hopefully I should be fine then.

Cheers

Waz

X800 Pro is about twice as fast as a 9800 Pro. And we've heard CS:S, on X800 Pro machines running 2.4C P4's got 60-70 FPS on aztec.

Now, a 9800 Pro is maybe.. 10% faster than a 9700 Pro. Not sure if CS:S was running FSAA/AF either.

So, probably about 40+ FPS on a 9800 Pro, and 35+ on a 9700 Pro.

whats a 9800 Pro XT like my friend has one and he worried he have problems too, he lives next door to me he also has that glitch problem in alot games with it.

The 9800 XT and 9800 Pro are very similar in terms of performance.
In esence, the 9800 XT is an overclocked 9800 Pro. He'll run fine as well, assuming his processor is up to par

I got a 9800 pro now.
But I wonder what the next largest bottleneck in my system would be.
I have an amd athlon xp 1800
and 512mb of ddr ram.
on an A7V266-e mobo. :-/ I'm thinking ... upgrade both of those. and hopefully i'll be ok.
My mobo only supports agp 4x though. but i can't afford to upgrade that much. especially not if I want to buy Doom3 and HalfLife2 both without waiting for the prices to drop.

What's the difference between a 128 and a 256 mb card, I see 9800 pro on 128 mb for a lot of money and everyone says its great and a 9600 on 256 mb for a lot less. Which should I choose?

A few people told me that there is practically no difference between AGP x4 and x8. I don't know if it's true or not.

The 256 meg cards tend to have slower memory speeds than the 128 ones, i think.
I also read with benchmark tests that 4x AGP is no ior hardly any different to 8x.
Your slowest bottleneck would be the processor i think RogueShadow.

hows this:

Athlon XP 2000+
Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
512mb DDR

would the cpu still hold back the video card alot or no?

I actually found a nice site where i can find a really nice pc for $1000, ill try and get the link

Here's my system. Thinking about upgrading soon though.
