Ok, I haven't read the whole thread - in many ways I'm a lazy lazy man, and besides it's 3am here, so apologies if the debate's been sidetracked already.
It's always seemed to me that the US often resembles less one nation, but many smaller ones, bound tightly together by the pledge of alliegence and a flag. Kind of like the EU, but closer. In between states, people seem to mock, hate and love each other by varying proportions; often there are such incredible differences in law resulting in a spectrum between "loony liberal" (ugh), hippie Commie love-ins and backward, racist theocracies (please spot the charicaturing there). It seems more than a wee bit bizarre.
