Mass Effect

thanks guys you did more to convince me to buy the game than any review ..my biggest gripe is that you dont actually fly in space ..it's all done in cut scenes right? also you cant jump into your squad members bodies and take them over right? but ya I've been itching for an immersive sci-fi game

I'm saving this till Christmas :)

Reviews seem to be good and seeing as i'm a bit of a sci-fi nerd at heart this looks like the nuts. Long live and prosper.

Unfortunatly not, I'm afriad. All flying is done through cut scenes and loading animations, etc. No squad member jumping either, or at least not that I know of. To be fair I'm glad for the latter - you build your character up with such a backstory and so many decisions that shape the play of your exp. in the game that the immersion within who you are is second to none. Like I said before, my character is a hardened military roughneck who does things by the book, but without going to deep into spoilers, I've already done some truely horrifying and dark stuff in order for others to live, or because of what I think myself, but in the same way I've also helped out others and done things against Alliance Military Protocol. It's amazing just how deep this game gets.

when i buy this i think i'll be a total arse to everyone first time.

There are times when you can be, but for the most part I'm resonable with my ships crew and squad. You get the chance to say 'Cut the chatter!' or 'Back to work!' and stuff like that sometimes but I always avoid being a total ass and instead go for something else, like 'I can see your point, but don't worry about it for now', etc.

It's cool.

It does look awesome, but don't think I'll be picking this one up. Not huge into the RPG side of games (as is proven by Oblivion collecting dust on my shelf).

Personally I plan to get this asap and I hate oblivion :)

This has replaced Assasin's Creed as my next purchase, prolly for xmas however, uni shit, i'm not a huge rpg'er and the combat might not 'click' with me but we'll see. Btw is the game choppy as hell? Also what about bugs/glitches? Reviews mentioned a few.

The soundtrack seems awesome from hearing bits of it in video reviews. It gives me Deus Ex/cyberpunk nostalgia. Whatever that means..

So how is the Citadel? What kind of places can you find in there besides shops? Apartments, clubs, etc..?

Unfortunatly, The Citadel is no Imperial City, but it's still fairly large and has a lot to offer in terms of story, discussion/interaction and items. Theres the main Citadel Embassy, and the apartments/offices for important figures, as well as some market areas, a bar, a fancy shop and then the C-Sec department which is the security center and main dock. The central plaza is nice but again, it doesn't come close to other such major cities. Then again, there might be more for me to discover. Not been there in a while... Thinking about it, there is a video showing a bar and casino that I haven't visited yet.

Jimbo: game runs fine for me. You'll see an occasional slight bit of clipping, like at the moment my character is wearing a helmet, and during conversations if he idily goes to wipe his brow... well, that animation obviously wasn't play teste whilst the character was wearing said helmet. Occasionally the graphics/textures will need a second to load, but this is only common after a long cutscene/interaction or after you've loaded a game from a while ago. Nothing major.

Yeah, the texture pop-in is the most noticeable "problem" and it is barely worth mentioning and in no way detracts from the gameplay. The framerate may suffer just a tad here or there, but even that is momentary and will go away in a second. One of the weirder bugs I noticed was taking the elevator to the docking bays on the Citadel and one of my squad mates disappeared through the floor as we traveled. She reappeared when we exited, but it sure was strange.

The game does remind me of a sort of sci-fi Baldur's Gate too at times and I am just loving it. Seeing what they have done with this one only makes the wait for Dragon Age that much harder. I think this may be my GOTY...so far at least.

I like the game a lot so far. Unfortunately, this game could have been my favorite RPG of all time if it didn't make a lot of infuriating design decisions.

I can get over the texture popup and the bad frame rate, but I can't get over the fact that EVERY FRIGGIN BIG FIGHT begins with a 45 second cutscene that you can't skip, then dumps you into a fight that you can't save in. If your anything like me, you'll end up dying over and over again, and you'll be forced to watch the same conversations and cutscenes again and again and again.

It really pisses me off, too. It's like an amatuer screwup, but Bioware should know better than that. If you're going to give us a shitty save system, then please let us skip the god damn cutscenes!

1st person option?
Can you get out of the tank thing on planets?
only 20 hours main quest and a few sub quests?

1) Over the shoulder zoom for weapons, although sniping is obviously sights.
2) Yes.
3) Who knows? People are saying 40 to 70 hours all in all, both for main and sub quests.

Well, you can fast forward the dialogue to shorten them by a huge margin, but can't skip them altogether as you say. No big deal really. Also, I am glad you can't save during combat because you might save just before you are going to get blasted and that just wouldn't work out. I am pretty sure the devs thought the same.

I am 12 hours in now and I have to say it is certainly my Game of the Year pick. It has been a long long time since I have had this much fun with a game.

I don't have an Xbox360 but I wish I did, this game is awesome looking. I really hope that it magically finds its way to the PC.

Once again I agree! And although I'm only about 4 hours in, its by far the best looking game Ive played. Its almost dare I say "like your controlling a 80's scifi movie". To those that are playing it has anyone messed with the graphics settings default-radiant-intermediate?? Ive got film grain on and I'm bouncing back and forth between default (cinematic) and radiant I cant decide what looks better!?!

I'm going to go sell some games tomorrow. Two Worlds.. and maybe Dead Rising and some others that I don't play anymore.

Damn, damn, damn, mine arrived in the post earlier (checked with home).

.... at work and busy all of tonight. :/

Ah well.

I completed the game earlier today, clocking in around 14 hours or so but it's been relentless dedication to the main quest. I didn't stray to far from it because it was so gripping.

The ending is fantastic. Usually in games I'm quite dissapointed by the end level(s) but this was truely epic in the sence that it didn't just throw lots of enemies at you relentlessly to really make it seem tough. Think about how Episode 2 ended, and how well it was done with the last battle. It's sort've like that.

You also get to make a huge moral choice, too, which I was thinking about for a good 5 minutes. I won't say what, but it's a tough one

Overall, it's been one of the best single player games I've played in a while. The story has never let up once and as soon as you get the hang of equipping the right gear for the right situation, the gameplay becomes awesome. Unfortunatly, as soon as you rank up all your Shield and First Aid Healing abilities for you and your squad, you become pretty damn invincible, but the game never throws an obscene amount of soldiers into the fray ala Halo - it sets up for perfect firefights in the same way Valve does it, with just better A.I. ;)

As soon as you finish the game theres no going back unless you have a save point before the final areas. Luckily, you can start a new game with all your stats still updated, minus things like assignments and missions in your journal. So I'm currently at the start of my second game with all my equipment and stats and I'm about to go and do as many side quests as I can.

Well, I didn't really pay Mass Effect much attention at all until recently. But after having watched a couple of video reviews, and some gameplay videos of the first 10 or so minutes of the game, I'm practically foaming in the mouth in ecstasy.

Shame I don't have a 360, looks like this'll have to be crimbo present "for my brother".

Just started playing it and let me say its EXTREAMLY interesting, and i cant wait to get deeper into it. This is my 1st bioware game and my only grip is not being able to skip dialog. I sometimes forget to save after a conversation or big meeting and have to listen to them again. Its not that bad but id like to have the option. The game looks amazing, feels amazing. About 1 hour in. OH and i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Them for adding a save feature. I don't understand why every game on the planet doesn't have a manual save feature. I HATE autosave's and a autosave system. LOVE BIOWARE for this feature.

You can skip dialogue just press X. It's the actual cutscene and convo you can't skip.

Also holy shit.

I accidently didn't choose the Charm option on the Wrex convo on Vimire and ****ing ashley out of nowhere just starts shooting him like 60 times. That bitch. Luckily I saved right before and saved his life. Poor guy D: he just wants to breed

Played half an hour last night.

As Asuka mentioned, only this much time spent can make you want to dig deeper.

I never read a thing in the manual, so I was basically going with on-screen instructions (which were fine) until I needed healing/first aid.... couldn't figure it out. :p

So yeah, looks very promising. Also:

NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUS! ;(

EDIT:

Also again:

If the guy who does the audio on the codex logs isn't the narrator in Crackdown, then I'll eat my hat. I picked out Krieas' (KoTOR II) voice as well. :D

I wasn't very good with Charm when I got to this stage so Ashley put a round into the back of his head when he drew his weapon on me. A shame, really, but that's what makes this game so good. The fact that these difficult decisions and situations come along is amazing. Now my chamr has gone up I'll finally be able to solve a hostage situaton on a frieghter ship sub-quest.

Just got the game last night its awsome! The graphics are amazing aswell as gameplay. This game is a must have for 360ers.

Beat it.

Clocked in at around 20 hours did alot of side quests, but didn't get the completionist achievement so I might go for that on my second play through. The ending was great, especially convincing Saren to shoot himself in the head. That was awesome. Question for those who beat it did you let the council live or die at the end? I let them live, but I hear the letting them die just results in a slightly different conversation where instead of just joining the council the Alliance kind of straight up just takes over it.

Got this today, been playing it for about 5 hours now and I've only just left Citadel. :x Framerate and loading sucks though.

I let them die, and in the end Ackerson becomes the human ambassordor, humanity makes its mark as saviours and thus completly changing the outlook on the Council and we go to war. Not sure if that's much different but yeah. Also, I never got Saren to shoot himself. That's awesome. Is that after you fight him whilst he's moving around on that Green Goblin like device, or the fight afterwards, where he gets impaled on the glass and then becomes the Sovereign/deformed?

I didn't fight him while he was floating around on his little hoverboard thing so, but I did fight him in his sovereign/deformed stage. Im guessing if you get him to shoot himself, you only have to do that last fight

I settled down last night at about 8 o'clock to have a proper shot at Mass Effect. The next time I looked at the clock it was 1 a.m.

I love this game, and even though I do have criticism for it, that can wait until I've finished. Which may take some time. :p

It's really cool, but the game is so bugged and choppy in places it's not even funny. I got stuck in a wall twice playing it for an hour or so, luckily I was able to get out by talking to someone nearby lol.

It's silly things like this that totally let down the epicness that this game is striving for, and it's ashame.

Honestly, it was only the graphical loading times that occured to me and they only started happening towards the end of the game, and they never really bothered me. Other than that I had no problems that distracted me from the game at all.

This game is ****ing amazing. I've had such an awesome time with it so far. I'm a sniper! weeeeeeee!
