Mass Effect

Started playing yesterday and up to the Citadel so far. Gonna do that side-quest for the Consort then head to another mission, got no patience for mass talking just now.

So far I'm liking it, but it hasn't blown me away. The dialogue is a little... sterile. Bioware's always had a bit of a problem with that though, hopefully they inject some more emotion soon.

Oh, and did anyone else name their character Revan? :D

Just finished it. Wow.
I let the council die. I didn't like that Turian anyway. And did anyone notice that practically every Asari is female? Hm? I didn't unlock either of the moral choices in the battle with Sarran, they were locked.. Guessing you needed max Charm/whatever to unlock them. An amazing game Will play through again soon! Oh, anyone know how to get the romance subplots?

I was offered an appointment to go and see that posh prostitute lady, but I never got time to go.

The Asari have no specific gender. As for the romance subplots

Just talk to either Ashley or Liara whenever you get the chance, like after every few side quests or so and start learning more about them. You'll get to the point where you won't be able to learn more about them, then right before you head to Ilos they'll be all "Lets have sex" And theres your romance subplot. Also if you do the entire conversations for both females they actually confront you later and force you to choose which one to go with. I went with the blew bewbs

Im really undecided on this game.

A friend lent it to me for the weekend, and I played for maybe an hour and a half before going back to Assassins Creed. Other than the superb dialogue and the great graphics, I wasnt very interested when it came down to the core gameplay.

However, I've been told that it just has a slow start to it, and it soon gets very interested and less linear, so I'm going to give it another chance.

If all goes well, I will try to get it by Xmas :)

It does have a slow start, oh, and if you went biotec, GET SINGULARITY, It's f'ing badass. I made my squadmates use their powers whenever, and the Asari would always se Singularity and kill everything. Or at least make them float and be stunned. It's AWESOME.

Yeah Singularity is pretty much the Adept I win button. Everything becomes completely helpless to you shooting them in the face.

When fighting the second boss Saren in the end game, my team mates would die so fast since they wouldn't move around. I tried reviving them but they would just die in 2 seconds. Had to just keep running around and shooting him... it was funny, though.

I went soldier, just cause right now its got a steep learning curve, so I wanted to stick to the most basic class. Do you guys recommend otherwise? Im only at the VERY start of Eden Prime, so its not too much trouble.

I've completed the game using a Vanguard. I think no matter what class you pick the game will still remain rather simple. There are just a few special abilities that they can use and you pick them by using RB. Not hard at all.

Alright, then Ill stick with the soldier, just so I can get all the nice armour and weapons.

I got this game yesterday and its pretty damn cool. Very KOTOR which is fine by me, but i've noticed the combat can spike in difficulty at the most random places. One time i'll be doing just fine mowing down enemies, the next second there's a cutscene and i'm dead within two seconds of its finish. This has happened on a number of occasions and its just annoying. Its not like i'm running towards the enemies trying to melee them or anything. Its annoying but i'll manage.

Real fun so far and i'm about 6 hours into the main storyline. Haven't done any sidequests yet.

I went soldier, because I just wanted to shoot things the first time through. I found snipers impossible to use during the beginning of the game, since the breathing shit was unbearable. I maxed it out, and now it takes .5 seconds to steady itself.. 1 hit kill on most geth, and 1 hit with assassination. Win.

Only just finished all the important side-quests in the Citadel. They're interesting, but I couldn't wait to get out and start exploring... damn my sidequest-itis. :p

Starting to get pretty cool, despite my impatience with some of the more drawn-out dialogue. The party fills out surprisingly quickly aswell, only one more slot to fill...

And I'm guessing it's going to be the Asari at the digsite, where I'm going now. :p
Edit - I went infiltrator. Fits in well with most squad configs and the abilities are fairly useful, still getting the hang of sniper rifles though...

Max out snipers as fast as you can. They rock. But assault rifles are really good for the last section of the game, and if it gets up close and personall I find some Geth sometimes decide to run straight at you and smack you. :\

Well:

My Vanguard Shepard has landed on Therus (I think it's Therus anyway) and has ran into a massive force of geth and bullets. This is hard :(

I'm sure I'll get through it, but Garrus, my sniper, doesn't seem to enjoy life

Well, I am playing as a smokin' hot blonde (female) and I seem to be forming great bonds with Ashley, Liara, and Kaidan, but I get back from this one mission and
friggin Kaidan gets all jealous and makes me pick either him or Liara and I told him to calm down but the game then defaulted me to picking the blue alien! I just wanted Ashley! I hope this doesn't spoil my uncensored fun later!

Ooooh! It's like a soap opera!

I just had a thought: Name your character Adrian! :D

Alright folks, wheres the best sub-quests at? To be totally honest with you going down to some grey, bare planet to kill a bunch of people for no reason is starting to make me feel different about the overall playability of the game. There's a few good sub quests I've done, involving actual characters, plot and two-way conversations such as hostage situations or crazy ex-Marines, but other than that I can't say exploring crappy planets for a crashed shuttle which, in the end, is nothing more than a grey block that can't be entered, just bores me.

I recently did the mission with the malfunctioning VI unit at an Alliance Training base on the moon. I was expecting an entire boot camp with people swarming around facilities sorting things out about the crazy VI. I was expecting the sort of training base you see in Starship Troopers, but you get the moon and all it is is three gun turrets you can enter, and each one is mapped the same with a similar objective at the end - destroy the circuit boards and disable the VI. That was it. Honestly, it was so mind numblingly horrible it made me want to burn something.

So, where and when are the best sub-quests? Really detailed ones, prefrebly, but whichever.

personally i enjoyed kotor more than mass effect, saying that it IS very good.

my main crits other than the obvious mentioned in every review crits are the lack of variation in the weapons or armor. in kotor if you were a sith you could get yourself the personal lightsabre of a superpowerful sith from centuries ago, or if you were jedi you could get the robes of the most legendary jedi that ever was, just to make yourself feel awesome. in mass effect you have guns or armor.....made by different companies......that are either better or worse than the one youre using.

Well, they can't have you wearing "The great battle armor of Kelthos IX of Planet Omicron Persei 8" because this isn't that type of game. Theres no legendary heroes or villians who left there shit in ruins for you to find >_>

well seeing there is a) plenty of ruins and b) a rich and varied backstory it wouldnt have exactly have been hard to put some ancient prothean weapsons or an artifact that belonged to the greatest krogan warrior of the rachni wars or something.... use your imagination.

Well first off about Prothean technology

Most of it was harvested by the Reapers for their own purposes. You learn this later in the game. They've been doing this for over a million years. Thats why theres so little Prothean technology,(The Citadel and Mass Relays were constructed by the reapers), to begin with.

Also why would some artifact be stronger than weapons you can access in shops or by the Requisition officer? The companies are constantly working on weapons and making improvements and such, so shouldn't the latest model be alot more powerful than a gun used over a century ago?

It's just things like what your describing wouldn't fit into the setting of the game.

I agree with that, I was hoping it would be much more similar to KOTOR (which I loved) in that area. After about 2 and a half hours, I'm still undecided on whether I should buy it so I'm holding out till the next chance I get to play it.

EDIT:

I think the accepted reason is that the ancient artifact uses technology that is either too advanced or complicated to be replicated by modern companies. Or its sometimes cause the artifacts have some sort of odd "magical" (I use that word loosely) properties.

They could allow you to find some badass prothean weapons.

But the protheans were already more advanced than any other race in present time Mass Effect. It would make sense if their guns also were available. Seeing as
that AI on the final planet shut off the pods that had Protheans in them
, I would easily buy that there still were Prothean technology and weapons available to some extent on that planet.

You would possibly kill yourself trying to figure out how the weapons work.
"Press that switch there... NO WAIT THATS A FAIL-SAFe.. /boom/"

Yeah, I agree about the special weapons and armor. Not enough rare and ultra-cool stuff. Still, maybe its in there somewhere and I just have to find it. Gotta get all of the sub-missions done!! I want weapons with names like Gardrayel the Krogan-Splitter or Lacnotron the Geth-Melter or some such!

Quaguar the Pistol with a cool name and because of that it has better properties for some reason.
+9 Accuracy!

Mods kind of defeat the entire purpose of having Unique weapons with special properties.

But personally I'd rather that stuff be left for games like KOTOR or anything else with a fantasy setting. I don't think I'd feel right using some gun imbued with the power of bullshit to kill geth.

And special object models also. In KOTOR, you just felt like a bad-ass carrying around a MASSIVE wookie-made warblade :p

Man im 8 hours in and i JUST became a specter and did 2 side missions. 8 HOURS!

So much to do! I did EVERY side mission on the citidle but 1. The one where you have to talk to a fan. Couldnt figure it out.

You have to keep coming back after completing story planets.

I should warn you, after the Citadel, most side missions are really just more of a chore than being any fun or plot interesting.

I love telling politicians and military brass to ram it.

Especially since

I was made a spectre, the Human citadel ambassador AND a rear admiral of the alliance fleet have been very critical of me. It's great clashing with them. I also loved it when I had to report to the council, their criticism actually annoyed me, so I had Shepard express my irk.

It's also awesome that you can just cut the transmission.

I think Mass Effect is finally starting to settle in the middle ground in terms of character development. I'm pretty much a paragon, but anyone that gives me shit or threatens my team I can get as nasty as I want without plunging down the road of the hybrid between Hitler and Skeletor. [ (c) Yahtzee]

anyone who could give me a condensed opinion about the game? i loved kotor2 and this game is really tempting, but i have to decide between this, cod4 or assassins creed. what appeals to me the most is the supposed 30ish hour length, and that ive played too many generic shooters, the story/interaction sounds cool as well as the whole sci fi aspect. what are its strengths vs flaws? is it immersive? is it repetitive? is it genuinely fun to play?
