Mass Effect

Yeah, there are so many side quests in the Citadel that I would hardly call it linear in any way shape or form. Loads of folks to talk to and lots of things to buy and see. I love(d) the Citadel. :O

I find it funny that your calling a game too linear in a halflife forum :)..
lol.. the most linear game OF ALL TIME :)

I find it funny you're presuming I think differently of HL2 and it's gameplay, or that my comment about linear play is sprinkled with hatred towards such a mechanic. No, I like linear, but for a huge city it didn't have dick on cities seen in other games.

Victim: It's not the quests, it's the place in general. Lots of closed-off areas that you can see but can't go to, or areas in general that are just closed-off for no reason. It just felt very mechanical, very cold. It didn't feel like a living city, more of a backdrop for quests to sit about.

I agree to an extent. Some of the cities in Final Fantasy XII were huge and breathtaking to behold, but the Citadel has more and better sidequests and locations (except for the Sansea and its monster-hunting board of course. I would have loved some mercenary options like going after increasingly powerful good/evil enemies across the galaxy and getting cool weapons and powers as rewards like in FFXII, but oh well--maybe in 2 or 3.) City 17 was gorgeous but alomst dead in comparison, but the HL2 comparison is hard to make since it isn't an RPG.

is the infiltrator class supposed to suck so much? am i doing something wrong or should i do another class? i completed the game with vanguard and i'm looking to play with something that's different and complex but also rewarding and fun.

I dont know, I really can't agree with the Imperial City or Balmora feeling more "city-like". The Imperial City felt like a...village. I suppose purely because it wasn't exactly built up at all, and there were only a handful of people scattering the streets having some pretty inane conversations. Similar thing with Balmora, it was just far too small and sparsely populated.

Can't comment on Twilight Princess though.

I'm playing infiltrator, seems to be going okay for me. Once you train up sniper rifles some more you'll completely own at long range combat. Just make sure you have a biotics teammate with you so they can stun/disable enemies who try to charge you, and maybe someone else with a shotgun. Infiltrators are pretty weak at close range, a couple of hits will do you in.

Anyway, can't compare it to other classes as it's the only one I've tried, so maybe it is one of the weaker choices. I'm enjoying it, though.

I just won as a spacer Sentinel at level 47. Took me 28 hours or so with a whole ton of side missions done in the process. Sucks that the only weapon I could use the whole time was a pistol but some of the other powers certainly make up for it. Not sure if I want to keep this character or start fresh with a new class. I will likely start fresh to get a better feeling for the abilities of the others. I would like to find out exactly what will transfer over from this game to the next one. Seems absurd that you could start the next one with a level 80 character or something. Anyway, this has definitely been my favorite game of the year. Loads of fun and I can't wait to play it over again as a Renegade either way! :D

God must be teasing me!

I didn't even get to watch the starting demo to the finish. My xbox fried :D WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

The game blows, don't bother. Rent it if you really wanna try it.

The only thing that bothers me about some planets is that its like they purposely made it impossible to navigate by placing the steepest god damn mountain ever between you and whatever it is you needed to drive too.

Haha thats true. There is always a way around those mountails but climbing them is a mission itself. OH and using the boost while jumping a high peek then pressing the boost key in short bursts = FLYING MAKO!

Up to Virmire clocking in at 31 hours right now. Level 40 something Im god like right now, no one stands a chance! OH and i have over 3 mill in money! As well as 999 Omi-Gel. No i dont really save it im just that good!!!!

Very nice. I wanna try and go through as the Vanguard/that other combat/tech class. I need to go out and buy the game first (been mooching off of Blockbuster). :p

What was your class specialization?

Okay, I need to spill out with the biggest negative issues I'm having with the game. Still loving it mind you (level 38 Vanguard), but there are some things which need addressed.

The item menu is fine for weapons, armour and biotics/tools - but breaking down weapon/armour components and ammo is a pain in the arse, unless you purge your items frequently. This is because it insists on taking you back to the top of every menu, which stinks because your more advanced items are listed up top, and the earlier, weaker stuff at the bottom. Also, why is the limit of 4 omni-gel apparent for every mother-****ing item in the known universe? It would have been SO MUCH better to have a system like KoTOR II where you use component parts to assemble custom weapon parts and armours.

Selling items is annoying too. Instead of a nicely organised list with categories or something similar, the game just compiles a huge arbitary list of EVERYTHING which you have to scroll through. I don't know if it's possible, I don't think it is anyway, but can the lockers on the Normandy be used as storage? the 150 item cap is a bit ridiculous when lots of great items become available from scavenging.

The above could be fixed in a patch more than likely, but unfortunately the repetitive elements in the game can't. Every planet that you land on, except story planets, are the same 3 buildings with a different crate arrangement in them. Civilian dwellings, research facilities and military strongholds are all identical, architects in the future must be even ****ing lazier. The Mako travelling and combat becomes horridly boring after the first few times. Once you get your aim in with the cannon a long range bombardment of enemy camps is the order of the day. It's not the best at handling and terrain is usually bland and overly mountainous.

The lack of cities is also just crap. Yes, again they are more apparent in the story missions, but that really deflates the scale of the whole game. The fact that identical colonies exist in space with no one to populate them except hostiles that seem to enjoy the taste of searing hot shredder rounds from my shotgun is a let down.

Finally, I feel no accomplishment in completing the majority of side quests. It's usually just a block of text - "Congratulations blah blah blah" and that's it. No cutscene, no negotiations, no murder no nothing. It's annoying in particular if you've travelled half the galaxy to finish a string of objectives to be faced with that.

I agree with a lot of what you just said. I think maybe playing as a Renegade will help you feel a little more of what might pass for "accomplishment" while completing subquests, esp. when people's brains are splattered everywhere and/or your bank account overflows with credits from bribes and such.

My biggest want for the next game is more cities to explore. I miss the days of Baldur's Gate and want other big settlements to house other (more interesting/involved) subquests and NPCs. That and some solution to the inventory mess that is currently the "Equipment" interface which you explain above.

the game still rocks though yeah? want to add it to my xmas list.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong--this is my personal favorite game of the year. It is so ridiculously atmospheric and the music is incredible (just got the soundtrack). I love all of those 80s sci-fi films so this is like a huge mash-up of all of them which is a cream dream for us fans I think. The story is extremely well done as well and the conversations are easily the most interesting conversations I have had while playing a game--that weirdo circular dialogue menu system has me hooked, as does the cinematic camera focus when having these conversations. Yes, add it to the list and pray you get it!

I loathed the music.. It was fine, yes, but it had this shite looping system where it would get quiet, then start up again very annoyingly, which is retarded when traveling..
do do do do ... do......do.. ...................... do do dod odo ....do do ..... do

Combat is kinda 'what am i doing!?!' as theres no tutorial, BUT you kinda get used to it after a few hours.

The story is just sublime. I still think Bioshock wins but the way this story is played out and how you have control over the conversations is just epic win.

I loved the music, it was great. If you had read the rest of my post.. it's how the used it.. it should have been one conitnuous cycle, but it ended and started up again which annoyed the hell out of me.

:upstare: /me mentally lowers dunce cap on crew-mate's head
Indeed. Too bad I couldn't get her to eat my peach (er, or apple, as it were). Yes, I am playing as a homosexual female. :)

+500 Renegade for corruption of a Believer.

Anyone tried hardcore with a new character? Defusing the bombs on Eden Prime is ****ing impossible. :D

Hehe, aye. From level 1. It's not impossible, it's just really, really, really hard. Core.

I thought of a possible strategy for doing it, but it would rely on Ashley and Kaiden not dieing. Damn Geth Shock Troopers.

Mass Effect has the dubious distinction of having introduced me to what is too date my most hated game enemy: the hopper. Creepy and annoying.

I agree with the often-voiced criticism about not being able to skip the cutscenes completely and I've noticed it's also quite easy to delete savegames by accident. Other than that, it's pretty damn good.

BUMP!

So i got this for Xmas and have been having a blast so far.

I've completed Eden Prime, Artemis Tau, Feros and Noveria. While looking in a FAQ to solve the core puzzle on Noveria i noticed there was only 3 more story chapters left so i've decided to pursue more side missions atm. Just found Wrex's armour :)

Still engaging in flirting with Ashley and Liara, Ashley asked Shepard for a drink but the response i chose resulted in no drink, hmmm do you actually have a drink if you give a certain response? Is there a cutscene or sumit?

In general i'm trying to be strict, forceful, single-minded character but often i choose the option that is geared more towards 'paragon' status. My character's paragon bar is more full(by only a bit mind) than my renegade despite me choosing the more scornful options in dialog. Its probably due to me choosing the 'nicer' options in the more major storyline choices, i choose to save the Raachni Queen :| Wrex was rather pissed about that.

I bring Wrex and Kaiden along on missions, i never really swap them :| I have both pretty maxed up, Kaiden inparticular on Decryptioins and Electronics, the primary reason i bring him tbh, he also seems pretty level headed in discussions. Wrex is strong in combat and my character, as a soldier class, can hold his own fine so combat so far hasn't been too aggravating.

One thing about selling your items btw. F.E i have 4 Proton v ammo upgrade rounds in my 'sell' inventory. I chose to sell 3 leaving one, does this mean i have one for just Shepard? Or my other 2 squad members too? Or is it one left for just one weapon?

I also got this for xmas. I'm an engi, paragon background and I play as paragon. I intend to go back and play renegade later.

I have to choose between the blue chick and that human whore. :(

Also Jimbo, they don't actually drink.

Its one of my favorite games of all time. Such a great story.

You guys are in for a treat. The story missions are some of the best ever. The side-missions on the Citadel are kick-ass as well. Most of the planetary side-missions are a little too similar unfortunately, but still some fun to complete. My fav game of the year.

Started a new game after maxing out my Soldier. Started with an Adept, the powers are fun.

bah, I just went into the menu screen and went into 'equipment' by mistake, i was told i was overloaded so all my new stuff had to be converted ot omni-gel, i had about 25 upgrades or so, lame, whats annoying is i had no way to exit that screen and go to a seller, i was even on my way back to the Normandy to offload the stuff, that sucks, i was told in an earlier screen that i would need to 'salvage' it or sell it to keep space free. By salvaging what do they mean?

Also could some answer this please:

I've done a lot of side missions. UNC ones are boring as hell. First few times in the Mako, driving around in a tank that can ****ing jump! Yeah!

After that exploring just loses its charm.

Strong resemblance to this, eh?

Though this was more lasting fun. :O
