that's gonna sell a lot of ps3s ...good to see ps3 games are reinventing themselves to attract a wider audience

Konami officially unveils Metal Gear Online for the Playstation 3 at their currently ongoing Metal Gear 20th Anniversary party in Tokyo. As 1UP (who are there) reports, a closed beta for 3,000 people is imminent:

We weren't allowed to film the official unveiling of Metal Gear Online for PlayStation 3 during the Metal Gear 20th Anniversary party happening right this very instant in Japan, but we can bring word that Konami and Kojima Productions will be orchestrating a closed beta to choose 3,000 individuals who will help them test and tweak the online multiplayer game.

Oooooohhh to be in that beta!!!!

This certainly be a great great way for PS3 to get their online services filled-up. Can't wait to see it running!!

Look about 2 threads below this one.

Metal gear Online and Metal Gear Solid 4 are two different games

here are the games that were announced at the 205th anniversary party:

Here are a few highlights:

* Series producer Hideo Kojima demonstrated MGS4 running on the PS3
* Metal Gear Online, a 16-player multiplayer PS3 game was revealed
* A Metal Gear cell phone and 3D mobile game were shown
* A new Metal Gear digital comic based on MGS2 is headed to PSP
* A special Metal Gear anniversary collection pack was revealed

not the same as MGS4

disappointing that it's a 16 player online game rather than a MMO as the "Online" part of the name suggests ...sounds like the usual Death match online shooter

A MGS MMO would be pretty interesting actually. You could have a number of factions or rival mercenary/gov't groups that you could join and you would have to protect your territory and secrets and also go on raids and infiltration missions and assassination missions. Could be very very cool.

Still, I think the core gameplay of the MGS series lends itself extremely well to this sort of thing. I just wonder how much it will differ from the online portion of the third one...very excited for details though. :D

there is no reason they couldnt do this ..hell make it completely instanced like Guild wars

I've never played any of the MG games so I really dont know what I'd expect but an online shooter is not all that interesting imho ..the name will most likely draw people in which can almost guarentee the game itself doesnt innovate or deviate from the norm ..however i could be wrong and they're heading in a nother direction altogether ...anyways not a fan of console shooters so this wont make my run out and buy a ps3 ..or any console for that matter ..shooters have been so dumbed down that there's really no point playing any of them because if you've played one you've played them all ..sure it's a generalization but for the most part it's mostly true ..shooters are now the Madden of gaming ...churn out the same shit year after year with only a few diiferences between iterations ...I was hoping ps3 would deviate somewhat from the xbox360 and offer up more than just games that would have been made for pc if consoles didnt sell so many copies of the game ..anyways I'm babbling

still looking for a reason to buy a console ..almost a year after the last of the next gen systems came out and I still cant find a single reason to get any of them ...ok Mass Effect is one reason but I'l wait till it's released to pass judgement

Whats the easiest way to make up profits with your software on a console that hasn't got that many units out there? Simply bring out two games without putting any effort into one of them knowing that everyone will buy it anyway. Well... thats the way I see it anyway. I wouldn't be suprised if Metal Gear online is just models ported from MGS4 and probably even parts of levels and stuck into some crappy deathmatch situation.

I wouldn't be suprised if this was konamis answer to putting such a powerful game onto a not so popular at the moment console.

short term yes, long term not good for business

MGS is being milked to death, and beyond. This shit needs to stop, it's cheapening a really good franchise.
MGS needs to be put away for at least 5 years, better yet 10.

Edit: IMo shooters are becoming better, in fact there has never been any year that I looked forward to so many shooter as this one.
You have the Darkness, Bioshock, TF2, Portal. Offcourse hl ep2.
Crysis, CoD4 and Halo might also turn out alright.

That was the most difficult beta signup I've ever done. I really wish I had payed more attention when I was supposed to be learning Japanese.

Of course, I'm going to kick myself if they announce NA signups today.

most of those games are the same tired gameplay with a variation or two thrown in for good measure ..except Bioshock and perhaps Portal, but that's more of a mod than an actual game ...anyways what I meant was MP shooters not single player shooters

Hopefully you see it wrong. ;) I cannot imagine a world where Kojima puts out anything, esp. with the MGS name attached to it, that sucks or is half-assed. Sure, some models and textures and such may be from MGS4 but from the looks of things, that isn't necessarily bad. This one should go a long way toward establishing the PS3's online presence in a very good way. I wonder what the gameplay will be like...it obviously won't just be a free-for-all deathmatch and that's it (though that would be fun too).

Oh, and you must remember that all good cash cows get milked. :)

According to Kotaku, it's a Japanese only beta. So if you don't live in Japan, you probably won't be selected.

details on the game:

The game will be a kind of hide-and-seek for up to 16 players at a time, and is called a "strategic multiplayer experience." It will feature the SOP system which allows players to keep track of their teammates via nanomachines injected into their bloodstream. The nanomachines allow them to see where the rest of their team are, their condition, which way they are aiming, and their range of sight. Enemy soldiers can also be injected with nanomachines, which will enable the other team to then keep track of their movements.

Metal Gear Online will also feature playable characters and environments from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and is slated as a PS3 exclusive.
