Actually, what I wanted to ask was whether, in light of its status as a runaway pop culture phenomenon, the Weighted Companion Cube, has replaced such stalwarts as Gordon and the G-Man, as the most iconic HL universe character. (I feared an explicit reference to the cube would get this post shunted off to the Portal scetion though).

Personally, I very much doubt it, but then I haven't seen any plush G-man toys lately. Surely, it's a testament to Valve's wonky genius that they could take an inanimate box with a heart stamped on it and make it more emotive than mainstream game icons like Master Chief. Is it simply becuase the cube was prominently featured in an iconic gaming moment?

And how about the cube's status as an item? In the past, the serie's most iconic object was the venerable crowbar. While the emmergence of such high tech tools as the grav gun and the ASHPD failed to raze the bar, the WCC might've done just that.

As far as creatures go...hmmm, the headcrab is pretty much a no brainer.

Nothing can replace the crowbar and the headcrab. The weighted companion cube is just some fly-by-night fad that everyone loves for inexplicable reasons. WCC will always represent Portal, not Half-Life--even though they exist in the same universe, no one will ever equate the companion cube to Half-Life.

WCC is Portal, not Half-Life.

You could make some argument about how they're both in the same universe, but both are very particular to their respective games. Crowbar/Headcrabs will remain the HL icons IMO.

Yeah, I've never seen WCC being linked to HL. Orange Box, maybe, but not the HL series itself.

Also, while all the obsession around the Cube seems to have simmered down after the first few months, Gordon still remains as the Master of Crowbars.

And despite how common they are in the games and stuff such as headcrab plushies being sold on Valve's website, I've never really thought of headcrabs as icons for some reaosn.

It depends, are we speaking on behalf of the average gamer or the die-hard Half Life fan?

The average gamer is going to recognize HL by probably either 1. Crowbar 2. headcrabs

But the die-hard fan will probably immediately say "The G-Man"

He is an icon, but I don't think he's definitive of the series. The headcrabs and crowbar are recognizable even to those who just played the first game passingly.

I'd say Crowbars, the Gravity Gun and the Lambda sign are the most iconic things in Half-Life terms.

I agree with Kupo
Those are the most Iconic things int he entire HL universe aside from Gordon G-man etc

For a spoken word, I think "It's time to choose" will always remain an icon of the series. That and it inspired a generation of map voters.

Funny thing is, if you'd asked me this question immediately before Half-Life 2 was released I would have said that the Hydra was the iconic enemy of the sequel. Whoops. It's still the poster-boy of Valve's development process though. Nothing is safe!

If I've gotta choose the first thing that comes to my mind about the whole Half Life series, I gotta say the crowbar. Followed by the lambda. I can't say the gravity gun because it wasn't in Half-Life...

This thingy right here:

Only took me about 0.10 seconds to find it on Google for you :bounce:
It's weird how different this looks from the video that everyone remembers the Hydra from. Jumpsuit Alyx fails.

Well, I never said the grav gun wasn't iconic, but as important as it is, I don't think it ever replaced the crowbar. Take a look at "Raising the Bar." Despite the fact that it's ostensibly a book about HL2, it doesn't feature the grav gun in any of the concept art. Gordon is almost always depicted with his trusty crowbar.

The GG is an iconic item for HL2 but not the whole series, for reasons which should be all too easy to surmise.

Iconic HL symbols:
- crowbar
- Gordon Freeman (nerdy protagonist, no speaking or ever seeing what he looks like ingame)
- Headcrabs
- Gravity Gun
- Portal Gun

maybe snarks too

Snarks really should be icons, but Valve has seemingly given them the shaft since HL1.

They're so awesome that it should be considered a tragedy that Valve hasn't given them their due exposure.

Snarks, like the Hornet Hand, are very HL1.

Odd that noone's mentioned Dog yet. He's a fan favourite and iconic enough to have appeared on at least one t-shirt. Maybe just another case of an HL2 latecomer not representing the whole series. Also, I guess we just don't see enough of the big lug.

LOVE D0g
He is defiantly iconic
The most iconic scene with him though i him fighting the Strider

I'd say the Lambda, the crowbar and headcrabs. Like a majority of people here.

The Lambda gets an immediate disqualification because, as a graphical symbol, it is an actual icon rather than an iconic item. It is however closely associated with one of the game's more iconic items: the HEV suit.

Headcrabs and crowbars are pretty much incontestable, as we have already seen. The crowbar also has the distinction of having changed the way I look at crowbars in the real world. I honestly can't look at a crowbar without thinking of Half-Life now. Then again, the same is true of cinder blocks and circular saw blades.

I think we need to change the topic to iconic scenes...
