what do you think is the most over-rated game out there and still in development?
(no F.E.A.R. bashing... but it can be included in your answer)
me?

Unreleased: Shell Shock 'Nam 67

Released: True Crime: The Streets of LA

Farcry! Ffs Farcry!
also: Star Wars Galaxies (actually more like most mmorpgs' :p)
Knights of the Old Republic

I'm gonna have to go ahead and MGS2. Any game with that incomprhensible of a story I just can't respect.

Released: Deus Ex - Invisible War
Unreleased: Duke Nukem
(Far Cry - I still can't get over the landscape, it reminds me of survivor, Lord of the flies, and Jurassic Park)

Released: Halo
Development: Halo 2

Which reminds me, why is it being called Halo 2 anyway? Didn't they leave the planet or whatever it was behind in the first game and the action takes place on Earth?

It isn't like HL2 where the title is generic enough to not matter.

I have to say Half-life. For a game that has gathered such a huge following, I really don't see what all the fuss is about. It was rather boring for me, I had a hard time making myself finish it.

Unreleased, I would have to say F.E.A.R.. Everyone was bashing it until the very low quality vids were released, now people are praising it and even saying it has the best graphics of any game which to me is laughable. You can't tell anything from those vids released graphically, and as far as gameplay it hasn't impressed me. The only thing that even began to interest me was the crazy ninjas jumping in and out of the ceiling, the rest looks very mundane to me. Especially the level design and character design.

But thats just my opinion. :monkee:

Doom 3 is the most overrated in my opinion.

Released games, I have one on my mind right now, and that's starcraft. It wasn't very spectacular for me, but everybody else seems to think its god's game.

and your on a Halflife website why?

Half-Life 2...

But seriously, how can you people say that games like D3 are overrated when you haven't even seen or played the game yet?

I'm not, I'm on halflife2.net. Half-life2 looks far different from half-life from what I have seen, and I have every bit of hope for it being a great game. I have every right to be here that you do.

HalfLife was about storytelling. Everything, the relationships (though limited), the scripted events, the weapons, the enemies, the puzzles, the environment, the gameplay etc, is there to tell a story. After recently playing through the SP again (and reading an interview) you realize that techniques like placing barnacles sporadically on the ceiling to slow down your movement and make you take in the atmosphere really work. There are so many design and narrative elements in HL1 besides the obvious 'no levels' and 'no cutscenes' that add up in the game to the point where I still don't think I have played a game since with as rich an experience.

I think that people who aren't really impressed by HL1 either missed these details, aren't looking for these details or just don't care about them. I guess another issue would be that some of the things Valve did with HL1 just aren't as fun as something like Serious Sam or Painkiller. Whatever.

Congratulations, you just contradicted yourself
Anyway, Doom 3's fanfare is about the "advanced graphics" it has. Or that's what is was about until S.T.A.L.K.E.R raised the bar ten notches ..... :)

You know they're trying to make Half-Life 2 so it captures the game play style of Half-Life. If you didn't like how Half-Life played I doubt you'll like how Half-Life 2 will.

Not really. Everything I hated about halflife seems to be removed from the sequel. By simply changing the environment from small sub-terranian base to large, sprawling city they have changed a significant part of the game. HL2 puts a lot of emphasis on physics in gameplay, which further deviates from the first one. Plus there is the real character interation and story telling which was very basic in the first. All in all the only thing they have in common is the returning characters and some of the same weapons. The character design is better this time around so I can actually take the enemies seriously. HL2 looks to be a vastly different game.

I can hate the first(which I don't, I just found it average) while still have hope for the sequel, and the fact that I feel the first was underwhelming doesn't mean I have no right to be here in anticipation of the sequel. Even still, I will buy the game because I know it will have a hude mod following migrating from the first halflife enigne. So from that, I could absolutely hate the sequel and still have reason for coming here to get news on the technology that might show up in mods. I hate when people start with the "then why are you here!?" shit when someone crits halflife or the sequel in any way. People can come and go as they wish for whatever reasons they wish, they don't have to justify their reasons to anyone. I could be here because I like the color scheme of the forum, thats no less a valid reason than any other.

You like the colour of the forums ....... right, well, I'm sure there are many forums that have grey as the main background colour, I can suggest some if you like ?

Well stalker is a bit overrated i think and mabye Halo2 and Doom3 but they look ****ing awsome :D

Point out where in my post I said, "Why are you here?"

When Half-Life came out the interaction and game play were mind-blowingly amazing. Not to mention the AI was far better than any other FPS game I had seen before it. The story was very basic but it was when FPS games were just starting to have stories rather than the run-and-gun games or the ones based off movies. The story telling will be the same in Half-Life 2, there will be no cut scenes just short scripted sequences. The levels in Half-Life were very interactive for the time but they could hardly place emphasis on physics because physics were just starting to be developed in video games. As for the environments in Half-Life, they were not all small areas, there were some areas that were quite large. It's almost been six years since Half-Life came out, trying to compare it to today's standards is nearly impossible. When Half-Life came out it was an amazingly superb game, far out ranking anything of its time and still out ranking most games today.

My bad, thought you were the other guy. You obviously enjoyed it quite a bit, I didn't. Thats just a matter of opinion. Thats all I'll say, as I don't want to hijack this thread. I hope I will enjoy the sequel more, who knows.

Overrated:
GTA 4, Diablo, most of the FF series, Diablo 2 and The Sims.

Underrated:
The Thing, Kengo: Master of Bushido and Fatal Frame.

LMAO, you know you just made a fool of yourself by contradicting your own statement.

Anyway, I think the most overrated game has to be Far cry. Horrible voice acting, stupid yet bearable A.I., dumb story, pointless missions.

I don't see what's so good about it, except visuals.

lmao mechagodzilla, i have never even heard of any of the underated games (except the thing). plus whats so bad with games being overrated? the overrated games are still 10 times better than the underrated games... its just that they seem 20 times better.

for instance i have spent over 400 hhours playing FF games and the story is sublime, plus the fight sequences are so damn fun. sure, it linear, but a game doesnt have to be non-linear to be good.

*note, i played FF games when i was 7 to when i was 11... i dont play them anymore, but i will when FF12 comes out :p

just for the record, i have completed FF6 once, FF7 3 times, FF8 2 times, FF9 3 times and FF10 2 times. they own. i love every bit of them :p But remmember that this is before i even had a decent PC... let alone played the wonders of BG2 and fallout.

p.s.... FF10 is appauling, and the main reason for this is because there is NO F***ING 3D WORLD MAP!!11!one!1

Both the Splinter Cell and Max Payne series have been very average imo and vastly overated.

Max Payne is a good game only too short.

Amen to that, for a second I thought I was the only one who thought Far Cry blew.

Max Payne was good but Max Payne 2 was GREAT! OOOOPPPPPHHHH!

The story of Max Payne 1 was better than Max Payne 2 but there was many things in Max Payne 2 i liked better.

Max Payne 1 was ok in terms of story-telling and comedy. (LOL @ Payne's face! Looks so friggin stupid!)

Max Payne 2 was just as great as the first one, but in a different way. The graphics was nice and the physics added alot, even if you didn't use it too much.

Both games ruled in any case. :D

EDIT: I don't think they were overrated. (But FarCry is indeed overrated)

its looking like driv3r is overrated, apparently its buggy as hell... then there is alot of confusion around the topic, i just hope i enjoy it...;(

Overrated:
Halo, Diablo 1/2, WarCraft 3, Devil May Cry, Far Cry

Underrated:
The Getaway, MGS2, No One Lives Forever 1/2

Far Cry is good up until the third (i think it's that one) then it just gets boring + repetative. Did I mention it gets repetative?

/me rofls at his OUTSTANDING humour

Bye!
