Most satisfying kill in single player

Harpoon Safari, Day 5

Now first of all, let me say I don't condone the shooting of Alyx Vance under any circumstances (and I didn't think she'd die, so that means I'm innocent, right?)

But, it's my duty to report that:

1. She can be killed with the harpoon.
2. Friendly Fire does nothing to prevent her death.
3. Her death by harpoon does not trigger the "mission failed" message. The player stays in-game, even though Alyx's death may have prevented progress.

An anomalous weapon indeed.

It happened like this:

That clinches it: I'm going to Hell.

That's interesting, although you can't get much farther without Alyx because of all those locked doors and security gates only she can open.

Where do you find the harpoon (or boat hook), by the way?

Addendum: the harpoon/boat hook thing was debated in the thread I linked above, but the party arguing for "boat hook" conceded defeat after it was revealed that the model name for the item is, in fact "harpoon."

So we're back to "harpoon" then. It can be found in the rickety old shed on the beach in Sand Traps (shortly after Gordon witnesses the death of Lazlow), and then later at the location on the Nova Prospekt cliffside where the two zombies are napping near the old, wrecked boat.

my god, that is truly the "Most satisfying kill in single player". anyway, thx for telling us newbies abt this harpoon thing. really really interesting stuff despite the fact that it has been posted b4. a sort of an easter egg that has never been reported..

Nokori3byo I have to say all your posts are well thought (Or atleast they seem that way) and you have good grammar. Thanks for revealing the harpoon as I was completely oblivious to that fact. Keep up the good work.

The harpoon is the most glitchy thing in the game. You can kill Alyx with it, which makes you stuck. You can kill the first antlion guard with it, which stops the Vortigaunt from being able to harvest the pheropods. If you shoot a turret with it, the game crashes. It's damn fun though. If only you could have it in every level (Gmod doesn't count, as that changes gameplay).

Summary

The harpoon is the most glitchy thing in the game.

True dat. And I promise not to waste any more bandwidth on my harpoon obsession. But for posterity (and my own peace of mind), I thought I'd jot down all of the peculiarities I've noticed so far:

1. 2. 3. The 3 that Riomhaire just metioned, with emphasis on the fact that the harpoon can kill characters shielded by friendly fire and disrupt gameplay.
4. A corpse pinned to the wall by the harpoon will sometimes shake violently for 20 seconds or more.
5. Harpoon hits never draw blood and do not gib antlions, BUT:
6. Standard antlions killed by the harpoon become grav gun-able, they can be picked up with secondary fire or simply punted around. The guard can not be picked up, but can be punted around.
7. A poisoned zombie shot with the harpoon will die instantly without shedding any of its crabs. They appear to die with their host, but without making the usual dying sounds.
8. Although dead bodies struck by an energy ball (i.e. the secondary fire on the OSIPR) don't usually disintegrate, ones fired on while pinned to the wall by the harpoon, do disintegrate.

So, yeah, I agree that these are probably exploitable glitches and not easter eggs, though they kinda work on an easter egg level, don't they?

Also, I have tried to hit a combine soldier with harpoon. It flys away without sticking to the harpoon and falls. Its corpse hit a wooden box and breaks it.
Harpoon does preven scripted sequence from taking place. When I was with Alyx in the beginning of Entanglement, I killed one combine soldier with harpoon. Alyx did not go to the operation room and continue the storyline. Since Alyx will go to the operation rooms ONLY IF all soldiers are killed, this conclude---

1. Harpoon-kill does not count as a kill. Althought the person is practically killed, it does not count as a death in script. This explain why the game won't end when Alyx get killed as well as some sequence won't continue.

2. Person killed by harpoon will be converted into their physics corpse model, which used to be acting as decoration of the surrounding atmosphere, rather than its normal death model. The reason for doing this is probably because this is the only way allowing "a body gets pinned onto the wall" effect.

Ultra conclusion
Harpoon convert a living body into a "physical death model" upon contact with anyone(6,7,8). This is not a killing process but a covertion process. So it bypasses the friendly fire shield, as well as the "death counter"(1,2). It is a one-hit convertion and does not inflict practical damage(5,7). The physical death models are for "pinned" effect, but it may stuck into the wall at some points, like every other thing else. Since a corpse is a complicated physics model, with all the joints, stuck is much likely(4). At last, the covertion does not apply on turrets for some reason(3).

Notice on slicing

I want to be able to slice through enemies at close range with sharp objects carried by the Gravity Gun. Without shooting them, I mean, holding them in the zero point beam D:

That's probably moddable :O

If your thinking of something to the effect of a chainsaw just use the gravity gun on a manhackand use it as a portable dispensable sleek ultra usefull chainsaw for only three easy payments of $19.95!
Operators are not standing by.

(I always hated those commrecials.)

Yesterday I was in Ravenholm and was using the gravity gun on washing machines to kill Zombies and I fired it downstairs and thought it'd miss, turned out it was a direct hit, straight on the head and crushed him, lol.

Also I think I speak for everyone when I say killing the Combine Soldiers with the crane and the storage containers on Highway 17 is hilariously fun.

I'd really like to see pies as a new gravity gun object.
How funny would it be to send some creamy pies right in the zombie's face? :E

Some other ideas:
- Fire extinguisher (explodes/cracks open on impact causing all the foam to come out).
- Filled garbage cans (garbage should fly in all directions).
- CD's DVD's or even better, old fashion LP's (could work similar the sawblade, but would stick in the body and not going through).
- Potted flowers (on impact the pot would brake causing the mud and flowers fly out).

They do have potted flowers somewhere in there I bet, because they have some in Day of Defeat but if you break the pot the mud and all stays in the same pot shape as if it were like a mold.

my favourite way to kill may not be in HL2 but in gmod. anyway, with nuke pack 4, dismemberment mod 1.9 and the HAAX!! swep, it's possible.

I FOUND THIS OUT, SO DON'T TAKE CREDIT!!

spawn an antlion with AI disabled then nuke it. when you respawn, chuck in a vortigaunt and shoot it with the HAAX!! swep and instead of JUST vortigaunt gibs, there will also be antlion gibs and >4x each part, like 4 heads and 8 legs and 5 bodies. it is truly epic. once the video is online, i will put it in here

But in HL2... I can't actually remember, i think than it's killing a metro cop with another metro cop using the super grav gun

The harpoon won't glitch as long as you only use it on common enemies. Killing bosses glitches the game.

Also, once you get to entanglement, any common enemies you kill with it will glitch the game, or at least has a high chance of glitching the game. Alyx may remain still and not unlock doors or certain npcs that are supposed to come through from a door (which opens up a new path) won't.

Harpoon killing is wicked though, and the crossbows can be just as fun if you know where to hit them.

I killed a Seagull in the final part of Highway 17 (Under the bridge) with a Crossbow during Bullet time (It was SMOD, not Half-Life 2)

It was in a near-deserted canyon in the outlands. The antlions came at me by the dozens, but it was the Guard and Guardian that outlasted them all. Expending all of my ammunition, I brought down the Guardian. I turned my attention to the Guard, flinging as many explosive canisters as I could in its direction. Soon they were all expended. I tossed a car engine or two before falling back on the last weapon in my arsenal: the crowbar. I didn't know if it would do any damage, but I figured it was worth a shot. The Guard charged, I sidestepped and swung. Crack! A blow bounced off the hard carapace; the monster collapsed into the dust with an ailing sigh.

Crowbar: Don't leave home without it
