Seems that way:

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development," said Riccitiello. The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. "And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about ? in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it."

Does Riccitiello mean the oft rumored Knights of the Old Republic Online? "Yes," he said.

I'm still undecided on it. On the one hand, the promise of a (potentially) good Star Wars MMO is enticing, and I'm really curious to see what Bioware does with the genre. But on the other... KotoR, man, you know? KotoR.

Incidentally, Riccitiello is such an obvious sci-fi villain name. This whole "EA turning a corner" thing is just an elaborate ruse so they can eventually rule the world with an iron fist via microtransactions. You wait and see.

I dont get why everyone thinks this is going to suck. Its only KOTOR in name. What it is going to be is a Star Wars MMORPG that doesnt suck. Sure its not actually KOTOR, but stop looking at it as if it were, and I'd wager that you'd be interested in it.

A good Star Wars MMO is an MMO that I would actually play.

And theres the problem. Stamp a classic title on a solid game and people get very disapointed very quickly.

It may very well be a good MMO, but having KotR stamped on the box will hold it back in many people's minds as it wont live up to thier nostalgia embellished memories of the previous games.

I honestly doubt that very much. Most people wont give a rats ass. A few will, but most people will see it coming from Bioware, see that its Star Wars, and see that its a good game (assuming it is), and the then the name of the game will mean nothing to them.

Besides, I'd bet most of the gamers they're trying to get wont even have played the KOTOR games.

This news makes me sad. I liked KOTOR as a single-player RPG. Call it something else.

I'm sure it will be a good MMO, and more importantly a good Star Wars MMO. But unless they find a way to translate the powerful character relationships that were crafted in the first two games into this title, I don't understand this decision. The genre doesn't lend itself well to immersing storylines and NPCs.

Yes, OK, but I wanted a real single player Kotor 3. Now I know that it will never see the light of day :-(

I agree with sea (to an extent, particularly with his videogames suck thread), because here's a prime example of executive/marketing stupidity.

KoTOR is perhaps one of the very few games out there that really truly needs a sequel. Its success as a series has been significant in the industry and many hold it in very high regard. With all of the sales and critical praise, the very obvious and logical step to take is to make a new, third instalment, possibly to wrap up the Revan/Exile story arc. All of this on next gen gubbins.

It doesn't take a genius to work out the [quite frankly] RETARDED strategy here:

1. See success of original games
2. See success of WoW
3. Imagine formula for successful combination
4. Produce formula:

KoTOR[sales] + WoW[subscriptions] = GREAT SUCCESS

WRONG.

Shitting out an MMO based on a previously successful game doesn't equal win and delicious cake. It equals fail and possibly cancer. Or aids.

mmo.

yAWn

gaY

I want a nice story and gameplay that ends when it ****ing ends. Don't ****ing drag me into an endless ****ing massively multiplayer online game with ****tards.

KOTOR was brilliant as a polished single-player RPG. Why jump to the MMO bandwagon, EA? You're just going to horribly crash and burn!

Or succeed!

Maybe!

Are you forgetting that Warcraft was a successful series of games too? Your argument hasn't a firm leg to stand on at this point.

Well I should reiterate by saying that copying WoW at all is wrong for any series at this point, seen as the MMO market isn't exactly close to breaking.

Nitpicky, jeez.

I'd like to see a proper Star Wars MMO come out, Galaxies was a joke

The image of bunnyhopping Jedis with 1337 lightsabers makes this very bad news indeed.

Correct, but most people with full-time jobs and such only have time to play one MMO in the spare time avaliable (WOW, EVE Online, EQ, Anarchy Online, etc). Whereas a good number of single-player games can be played over a number of sittings whilst still being a coherent experience, playing multiple MMOs over the same time period means higher subscription fees and diluted entertainment as you try to get equal worth out of each MMO in the time avaliable.

The formula should be something more like "Copying Blizzard =/= instant success", but I always thought that was a given.

Because if any game should have an awesome MMO is should be the Star Wars universe.

A Star Wars MMO exists now, but it is far from awesome.

I will say there are 3 factors here, 2 of them are bad omens. EA and LucasArts. The last factor which gives me hope is Bioware.

I have to say my expectatoins are low, but my hope for this succeeding is high.

But, KOTOR isn't in any position to have a ****ing MMO now.
They could've waited until after KOTOR3.

What in ****'s name went through their brains that said "HEY I BET DA FANZ WOOD RLY LEIK A KOTOR MMO GET 2 DA DRAWIN BORDS LADEEZ!!!!1", Is what I would truly like to know.

I don't see this as a good idea in the slightest, the entire KOTOR fanbase has been wanting a sequel, a singleplayer sequel.
I'm sure not once did the hope for an MMO ever cross any one fan's mind, therefore Bioware can go f*ck themselves.

Ah but Bioware is EA's whipping boy so fault isn't entirely on them.

You know what's even more fun? I just saw in the news over here about E3(With some Swedish game journalist) and the CEO or whatever goes on to say the "KoTOR MMO is the most anticipated MMO in the gaming world right now", I mean it was just officially announced, I can think of more people who are excited for Warhammer Online than for KoTOR Online..

I don't see the big deal.

Quite possibly it just means it'll be set in the same, or similar, time period as KotOR as opposed to SWG being set around the time of the films.

And then we get to pay a monthly fee and deal with a bunch of cybering ****tards constantly spamming "LEVEL 902 DARK VIBROSWORD WITH FLAME +10 FOR CHEAP PM ME!!!!" every 12 seconds in the chat.

Yeah, no thanks.

please put in as many Star wars nerdy activities as possible in game ..so I can use my sith light stick of awesomeness to chop those participating in said nerdly events into little itty pieces

I think it's a great idea and people need to stop bitching about monthly fees ..how many games do you get hundreds of hours of entertainment for $15. get a job $15 a month isnt that bad a price to pay or better yet just dont play the game

Maybe a Galaxies overhaul would be a great idea for some people. But pushing KoTOR in this direction is wrong.

There's going to be no closure on the series storywise, and this alienates people who don't care much for MMORPG's, say for example - me.

agreed ..to be honest I barely played kotor and could never follow the storyline ..I just want a game where I can pew pew AND slice people with a lightsabre AND isnt crap

and I dont see how they can alienate people seeing as how their core market was console gamers ..they'd have to be accomodating to that crowd because I dotn see it being a pc exclusive

I don't have any fundamental issue with a KOTOR MMO being made, but I would at least expect some closure to the Revan/Exile storyline in another single-player game. I better see an announcement regarding such in the near future, otherwise I will be mad ****ing pissed if this is meant to function as a substitute.

man you sure do like to jump to conclusions even though there hasnt been a single feature revealed on the game which obviously means it's exactly like Mario Kart

Man, your sense of humour is severely handicapped.

it's like peter and the wolf ..after the third phony cry of "wolf" the villagers stop coming because they just have grown to expect Peter to cry wolf

Considering I want to learn more about the story, yes, I probably will be forced to play it.

You're assuming the plot will be in some way related, other than merely the setting.

For all we know they're planning to set it during the events of kotor1 or 2.

On one of the recent 1UP/GFW E3 Podcasts Jeff Green pretty much nailed the fact that in recent years trying to complete in the MMO space has been the one that's been fatal for developers. There's a large but finite audience of MMO players out there and your game really has to appeal to them for the long haul if it's going to capture a large enough market share to stay alive. The whole MMO scene is as much about being a social space as it is about a game and players loyalty is as much to their ingame friends as it is to the product after a while. Given the grind nature if you half and half your time between 2 MMOs, you'll drop behind compared to your ingame friends, if you completely jump ship, you loose contact with one half of them. Plus your paying two subcriptions.
