new HL2 shots on planet halflife

Yep - HDR enabled on a X800 with 8xAA and 16xAF that's what you'll get. ;)

After seeing these how can anyone say the graphics in HL2 are no good anymore? Nothing is on par with these.

Exactly, let's gauge out the eyes of the people who do say that.

You know why I LOVE that river screenshot with the grass and stuff?

It looks real to the point where you're almost afraid you'll get mud on your boots.

And that tree thing is bloom not HDR. HDR is basically an image with a higher range of colors, that allows for cooler than normal reflections. Secondly, the higher ranges of colors allows for the in-game camera to simulate a real human eye through auto-exposure/iris...this is something to behold in actual motion. When you're in a dark room and step outside into sunlight, you'll be blinded by the bright light for a second.

You really can't confirm the existence of HDR through screenshots, that's why it's called high dynamic range.

Heh, I'm not sure. When you look at the stuff in the foreground it looks like a render because of the shadows and the fact that it looks like textures but when you look at the background it seems far too detailed and too much like a photo to be from a render (plus the shadows don't look like something I thought HL2 could do).

Its hard to tell with that one.

EDIT: Its like they took a render and placed it in front of a photo. Of course I could be very wrong.

Sounds like a challenge to me! an edit-your-house-into-a-screenshot-and-make-it-look-natural-contest!
Or the EYHISMILNC contest, for short.

That tree bloom thing is caused by HDR. You would not have the blooming without the HDR.
