NMA previews Fallout 3

What I read (sort of glanced over the 3 pages):
"Whine, whine, whine, it isn't like Fallout, whine whine."

And at the end it criticizes the game for not being innovative, right after criticizing it for not being enough like previous Fallout games for 3 pages. Hah.

Not that I'm saying Fallout 3 is gonna be great, hell I don't even care about the game at all, but it's hard not to see the sweaty nerd anger in that preview.

Don't comment before you actually read the article.

Because what you just posted is a wad of bullshit of epic proportions that even Dubya Bush couldn't create.

Ah, christ. I gave up when it got to examining how much text the NPC chat displayed at any given time. No way am I piling through 3 pages of that...

So was it good or not?

I would've, but then I remembered I don't care about Fallout 3.

The preview is just full of snide stabs at things that are either quite trivial or expected in a game a year and a half away from release.

Actually I think the sweaty nerd anger was appropriate in this case. Oblivion had a lot of graphical and gameplay shortcomings that I was able to overlook because the gameworld itself was of so little interest to me. Dialogue, for instance, was just plain dire - so I just avoided talking to anyone and slashed my way out of situations. However, dialogue was always the best part of Fallout for me, and this preview seems to confirm that while it won't use Oblivion-style keyword clicking, it follows on the trend of having characters who are stale and mechanically change facial expressions every time you say something. Similarly I'm sure that many of Oblivion's other faults will have survived the transition.

Plus, the previewers' opinions weren't one sided. If they saw something they liked, they said so - like the presentation of the Vault. As a result I respect their views, especially when they speak about the Brotherhood being macho cliche's and such. It sounds really wrong.

One thing that did please me was to hear that the lead designer was Emil Pagiarulo - who worked on the Thief games and who made the Dark Brotherhood quests in Obliv.

I just finished reading it and PvtRyan is dead on, they keep comparing it to Fallout 1/2 or say how close to Oblivion something resembles. NMA are a bunch of Fallout purist douchebags who hate change

Fallout was a great game for several reasons, and I to would be unhappy if a corporation made a sequel to the game that was so great and make everything that made the original great, wrong.

I dont agree with everything in the preview but it was a good read.

What the **** are you reading?
The review described details and details of different things. The review itself seemed pretty unopiniated, and it was very polite giving the standing of most of NMA.

Hell, even the opinions of the 2 NMA folks at the end were very polite, they didn't even go "This is hopeless! SUCK SUCK SUCK!"
They were like "It's not a Fallout sequel, but it will be fun, just nothing groundbreaking." and "Maybe the skillful modders of Oblivion and Fallout can make it into something more Fallout" (Quotes aren't even close to what they said, but that's the general idea I got)

Er, change into Oblivion is bad. Fallout 1/2 are good.

I wholeheartedly agree, I had to practically force myself through the "storyline" of Oblivion, talking to NPCs was an awkward chore and combat loosely resembled a kinder-garden ball-pit fight.

I never said changing it into Oblivion was a good thing, nor did I say Fallout 1/2 were bad, but if they just took Fallout 1 and redid it with better graphics, that would be shit, I'd rather have a stand alone game with some good things from the old games and some new things that are interesting.

Just look at Brotherhood of Steel

I find it rather amusing that they desire a game as close to Fallout 1/2 as possible yet still incredibly innovative and brand new and genre-shattering.

Even with their sweaty nerd anger about their impossible wish going unfulfilled, they did bring up some worrysome points. Their review was fairly objective, especially for NMA. No blatant negative spinning that I could see. I didn't like all that I saw that Bethesda was doing, even then. Then again the game's, what? A year away? I'm willing to forgive some AI idiocy in this demonstration, as long as they see it and correct it.

Let's wait and see, but for now, I think I'll just stick with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Heh, nobody could resist throwing in something negative about us, did you?

If they **** up the dialogue, head on a pole for them.

Fallout needs good dialogue. Hire the Troika dudes who did Bloodlines if you have to. But make the dialogue awesome.

Brought it upon yourselves really.

Other than the few ridiculous, incredibly trivial complaints and contradictions, this preview is pretty unbiased and down to earth. And they say humans don't progress.

Newsflash: We've been doing objective journalism for the past 10 years, if you did care to learn anything about us.

Read the whole thing; there are a few trivial bits but for the most part sounded like exactly what i was expecting from Bethesda. But we'll be waiting for release, now won't we?

I find ignoring NMA is the best solution and make my own judgments based on a finished product.

"Hey kiddies, let's rate games that aren't out yet!"

Oh yeah, you're news columns are good stuff. Usually. Fallout related stuff can be a bit iffy, usually with stuff like this, but otherwise fine. And hey, that's expected. It's a fan site. I'm mostly talking about the actual fan base and those "falloutfascists." I didn't start reading NMA yesterday. I just don't waste my time in the forums. I thank you for the newsflash though, and to answer your question, no, I don't care to learn anything about you.

The only thing I know about NMA is that they have pretty much bashed Fallout 3 since its announcement, and that a lot of your arguments about things piss me off.

I skimmed the article, and went to the last page to read the conclusions. But tbh, until the game is released, im not going to even give a shit about it.

Alot of the errors raised are ones I havn't seen in any other sites - they all seem to love the ground Beth walks on... it was annoying me to say the least. A NMA review is good to look at someone that isn't on their knees for Beth and Consoles. Finding the use of nukes and lack of strict BoS unnerving.

after the disaster of Oblivion Bethesda is dead to me
more so then EA,atleats EA games are fun to play.

Fallout being a series I enjoyed, if they screw it up badly I'll feel it moreso than Oblivion.

And Liam Nelson better be there longer than just the tutorial. Damn you, Uriel Septim! Dying and thus removing Patrick Stewert from the game incredibly early!

Have you even read the preview? Or base on circulating rumours?

Funny.

Gaming sites: OMG! BUY IT! COOL! AND SUCK HOWARD OFF WHILE WE'RE AT IT! FALLOUT FPP!

Internet users: Yay! Objective, unbiased press!

NMA: The game, while looking fun, is a far cry from a Fallout sequel.

Internet users: ****ing fanboys.

In general I avoid all reviews. There will either be a demo or I'll borrow the game before deciding to purchase it. All reviewers in some way little or small are biased one way or another. As long as the game is fun and interesting I really don't care what they do to your beloved Fallout name.

I'd rather go to NMA for a good impression, anyway. Sure, there's some trivial stuff in there, but not a single reviewer had the balls to bring Oblivion up on its countless and immeasurable short falls. So, in that sense, you have a pretty good idea what to expect from previewers and so on.

I did go to the effort of reading most of that preview and thought it was pretty decent. Much better than some of the other crap I've seen, thank you gamespot.

I use Gamespot to check up on game news and the like, but I rarely read their reviews. They gave Bioshock 90% because the combat was unsatisfying (which is a matter of opinion) and because of the quest arrow (which can be turned off). Nice one.

Heh, I liked Oblivion a lot because I didn't explore all the things that made it bad, such as plot and characters. I simply created my character, gave him some nice clothes, an assload of money with cheats, then went on a tour of Cyrodiil, and enjoyed myself. Playing the game as it was meant to be played was just annoying.

Although if any one has read the RPGCodex review of Oblivion I think it is spot on and hilarious. I recommend it.

NMA's been in Leipzig and our preview of Fallout 3 is ready. Honest, factual and detailed walkthrough of the demonstration. All substance, no hype.

Also, no paid off previewers.

Enjoy!

you dont honestly think payola money is given to the press to write favourable previews do you? at such a large venue where just anyone could attend? ok I can see an exclusive sneak preview where negotiations are made but this is a live show accessed by thousands of people; any overly favourable preview would immediately stand out

anyways I'm reading bits at a time but I cant help but think that the writer is comaring F3 with previous games a little too mcuh ..F3 isnt F2, get over it

I was kinda amused to read the developers stating proudly that most of the development team wrote the dialogue and so on. We can tell. It's ****ing shit.

My issues with NMA aside... No problems with this preview.

I'll admit that I when I first read that Brother None was heading this up, I was ready to facepalm myself. So I was surprised to see some pretty honest, objective impressions of the demo. It wasn't the pedantic hate-fest I thought it would be, and it actually made me wary of certain elements (mostly the way Beth is handling dialogue). But he gave points where he felt it was deserved.

All in all, a refreshing report.
