No single, sellable PlayStation 3 console has been built yet, with less than three months to go before the worldwide launch, according to Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

"We haven't started manufacturing yet," says Hirai, raising further fears that PS3 will be near-impossible to buy this side of 2007, let alone on its scheduled release date of 17 November.

Sony expects to be able to provide less than 700,000 consoles per major territory before the end of the year - meaning 700,000 for Europe, not just the UK - and Kaz Hirai states that the challenge of meeting demand is "a logistical impossibility". However, even without a single console built and ready, Hirai is confident that "everything's pretty much on track".

The lack of product doesn't stop Sony predicting bigger success for PS3 than the 100 million worldwide sales that PS2 has accomplished so far. Hirai confirmed in an online interview that there will be "some shortages" but that things are "good to go". A delay to the launch of PS3 is not an option - "I don't think that's the approach we want to take".

So, with a depressingly small number of PS3s likely to land in the UK this year - some have predicted 150,000 as the worst scenario - and Sony's storerooms as bare as burgled houses, is PS3 play in 2006 nothing more than a pipe dream for UK gamers?

*shakes head*

Oh well, maybe with less PS3s on the shelves, more people will buy the Wii. :cheese:

bah sony is screwed with the ps3 and only 700,000 units per country???

There are actually more than 150.000 people who want to buy it? :|

The thing will sell out at launch, but every console sells out at launch. I was thinking of getting one and just ebaying it.

They spent to much time talking about technical crap.

This story? ZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Who cares about their production right now?! Get one later if you like. Launch is all hype and more often than not disappointing anyway.

I was thinking of getting one and just ebaying it.
Now that's something worth considering...:P

To be honest, the only people I see who really care that much about the PlayStation 3 are Metal Gear Solid fans and Final Fantasy fans that only want a remake of Final Fantasy VII anyway. Isn't just about everything else on the XBox 360 anyway?
Sort of. There are some companies, like one of my all-time favorites, Level 5, that will be developing for Sony and not others at this time. They made the Dark Cloud series and Rogue Galaxy and the incredible Dragon Quest 8. I am such a huge fan of their talent that if they are sticking with Sony, I might have to as well. Not to mention the Sony in-house studios that brought us God of War and Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

Still, doesn't mean I won't be getting a Wii and quite possibly a 360 as well when the price drops. :naughty:

Well Sony is a great first party developer and they've always had exclusives that got people into the PS2. Something like God of War won't see its way to the 360 or any other console and people know that, so they buy Playstation.

3rd party titles can be found on both the 360 and PS3, but Sony will probably have a couple 3rd party exclusives still. I don't think MGS4 will hit 360 and if it does, it'll be much later down the road. Capcom will probably keep Devil May Cry 4 exclusive to the PS3, but you never know.

There's plenty of potential titles, it's true, but Sony has yet to show me anything compelling. These future titles are still "what if" scenarios and as far as I'm concerned don't even exist until I see solid proof of them. I'm not going to buy a console based on "there might be some good games later on", and I doubt that anyone else will. The fact that Sony is actually relying on this is insulting to consumers.
I would say that the talent from their in-house studios, along with their respective track records, is enough to demonstrate to me that great games will come from (at the very least) these studios, which I happen to appreciate greatly. I don't see any insult in it at all to expect great things from great developers.

Well that's how Sony works. They sell systems on promises that usually don't come to fruitation. Still, there's a lot of compelling stuff on the system. Resistance, while lacking in art style, will end up being a pretty good FPS.

Team Soho: Getaway

Those two games make me want a PS3 pretty badly. :D

Before rockstar said GTA4 was coming out on the 360, I did consider buying a PS3. And now? Sony can shove that overpriced overrated POS where the sun doesn't shine.

Personally, I think the PS3 isn't going to do aswell as the other Playstations did in the previous generations.

The entire GTA series is much better on the PC anyway ;)

Well the only differences between the consoles is that Sony is charging a shit load more.

There is definitely more reason then that.

Hardly. With the PS2, Sony said they could deliver Toy Story-like graphics and people bought the hype. Fastfoward to the consoles release and there is nothing on the market worth owning, but it still sells. Takes about 6-8 months before anything worthwhile comes out, but people still stick it out.

At its unveiling, PS3 was hyped to no end and a handful of CG trailers were shown to give the audience an understanding of what to expect. Only problem is that the Killzone & MotoStorm trailers were a little too much and now it's backfiring in Sony's face.

No, the CG trailers were shown to the audience as if they were actual games running on the PS3.

Well yeah, that's how Sony does it. Then after a week of debating between fanboys, Guerilla Games announces that they were just target renders. :)

Yeah, but Motorstorm is looking quite good right now and there are still a few months to go before "launch," so I wouldn't worry too much.

As you ca see, the environments are greatly improved even from those last vids we saw a few weeks ago. :D

Likewise, Guerilla are now in-house Sony developers and you can bet your sweet bippy that they will get their title to either look like the target renders (that is the point of them after all) or surpass it. There is simply too much pressure to let anything but perfection out the door.

Is it me or is there little or no AA on that shot?

You can't suprass your target renders if your system isn't capable of it.

I bet that theyll end up pressured to meet a poorly planned released date, and we'll end up with a somewhat pretty.....but buggy game.

Um, its vastly improved over just a few weeks ago, so hold yer horses! These things take time! :cheese:

I imagine that it'll be like MS with Halo: they won't let it out the door until it looks/plays really well. It is to be their 'secret' weapon and a game that will likely sell lots of systems, so they will not force a release like the one of which you speak.

anyone remenber killzone?

I think the reason of why the game got so many bugs and defects is cuz sony want it to release it before halo2
cuz imo the game could hav been much more better

Yeah, it had some great potential and some very cool bits, but overall not great. Still, they weren't owned and run by Sony at the time, so this will likely be very different, especially given the infamous footage. They have to meet that and Sony knows that or they will lose whatever credibility they have left.

Which is what they're not going to do with PS3 Killzone. There's enough on the system to hold off people until it's ready.

yeah but I hav lost trust in sony

however who knows, this stuff of not enough ps3 to launch may be some trcik to make the people go "omfg I better go 3 days before launch and sleep there until the shop opens!" and when retarded media shows began whit the "this is the line for waiting for the ps3!"*peple start to say "whoo!" like in a concert*"we are anticipating the ps3 too!",more people will go

360 is doing just fine for me aswell, but there's still plenty that MS can do to improve the system. Right now my biggest complaint is with the quality control issues with a lot of these games. I was fine with launch titles and post-launch titles getting patched, but it really shouldn't be happening anymore. Madden for example, has a handful of glitches in the 360 version that make the game almost unplayable (more so than already).

jeez...I sooooooo know that the PS3 will fail.
I dont know anyone that would$600 on it.
Im going to get a XB360 soon and the Wii thats all I need.

PS3 is still expected to have the most marketshare out of all the consoles, so I wouldn't say Sony has failed, but anything can happen. If the system continues to sell well post launch then Sony is pretty safe, but if sales don't meet expectations, Sony is in for a world of hurt.

I think it's safe to say that Sony has taken a Critical Hit for MASSIVE DAMAGE!

*drum sound*

Xbox fanboys really need better hobbies other then finding all misinformation that sheds badlight on the Ps3. Should really do something more producting then masterbating while trying to flame the Ps3.

1. Link doesn't work
2. I'm not an XBox fanboy; I never play mine.
3. I don't "masterbate". In fact, I've never heard of "masterbation."
