Nukes over America

Last week those fears turned into farce when the US Air Force sent five nuclear-armed cruise missiles into US air space without realising. Fortunately, 3? hours later, the missiles were back on terra firma.

The mix-up happened when a B-52 bomber aircraft left Minot Air Base in North Dakota for Barksdale in Louisiana. Unknown to those on the ground - and presumably in the cockpit - it was carrying cruise missiles tipped with W80-1 warheads.

The bombs, with yields of five to 150 kilotonnes, or 15 times the strength of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima, should have been unloaded at Minot for decommissioning.

The incident, first reported by the Military Times, has raised alarms about the security of nuclear devices and safety precautions. The US Air Force and experts said there was no risk of a nuclear detonation, even if the aircraft had crashed. The investigation will ask how an elaborate checklist of procedures for nuclear weapons was not followed by the crew.

I was moving all day yesterday and have to catch up on all my work today so I haven't been keeping up with the news much but I heard a bit about this this morning. Can anyone explain to me how in the hell you load up nuclear weapons on to a plane by accident? I have a real hard time believing this was a mistake, it had to be intentional. If this really was an accident this country is ran by total ****tards and we are totally ****ed. But they can't possibly be that stupid. I wonder if this had anything to do with Iran.

Wow... that's frightening. But not as frightening as it might be if they were mounted on the aircraft in some way for payload delivery.

On an unrelated note, I keep having these dreams, day after day, of me looking off into the distance, being able to see hundreds of miles away. Bright flashes of light, nuclear explosions, go off one by one. Oddly enough, I'm not worried about the nukes. I'm worried about the gigantic mile plus high wall of water rushing my way from all directions.

I constantly have this same variation of a dream.

This isn't the cold war. I still haven't read an official news story about this but from what I read here and heard from others is that they loaded up nukes on a plane "by accident" and didn't realize those nukes were on there for a while. And you feel comfortable giving the most deadly weapon ever made to idiots like that?

The US never stopped its long range patrols. Thats why the Russians (or at least part of the reason) have restarted theirs.

I love how they lied about the decommisioning, theyre blatantly covering it up. They need all the nukes they can get, they cant wipe out the middle east and china when the time comes without them.

I just want to point out, just because there are nukes, doesn't mean they haven't decommissioned or strayed from it. There's no regulations in place requiring the decommission of all nuclear weapons, just excessive ones.

The US military transports Nukes in unmarked semis all the time. So even if the bomber would have crashed, the nuke would have detonated. Two different ways a nuke works:

A sphere of U-235 is made around the neutron generator and a small bullet of U-235 is removed. The bullet is placed at the one end of a long tube with explosives behind it, while the sphere is placed at the other end. A barometric-pressure sensor determines the appropriate altitude for detonation and triggers the following sequence of events:

1. The explosives fire and propel the bullet down the barrel.
2. The bullet strikes the sphere and generator, initiating the fission reaction.
3. The fission reaction begins.
4. The bomb explodes.

2nd.

The implosion device consisted of a sphere of uranium-235 (tamper) and a plutonium-239 core surrounded by high explosives. When the bomb was detonated, this is what happened:

* The explosives fired, creating a shock wave.
* The shock wave compressed the core.
* The fission reaction began.
* The bomb exploded.

So in order for it to detonate either of the two above ways would have to have happened. This could be triggered by man only, not concussive force. So its not like "OMG USA coulda killed us all if they crashed"

It doesnt bother me that they were in the air. Theres no way a nuke can go off on accident, so there wasnt that huge a threat.

What DOES bother me though, is that nobody noticed for so long. I mean, wtf happened?

I can just imaging some terrorists nabbing a nuke while the crew isnt paying attention. Then I imagine someone going "Hey.... where'd the nuke go?" Then the entire crew scratch their head and look under benches and littered newspaper for awhile before they realize its stolen.

I am amazed that this happened yet at the same time not amazed. There are very bright people and very dumb people in our armed forces. Unfortunately the nuked are simply long cyrindical things and the missles look like long cyrindical things. It is easy for an idiot to mix up an ID number and a few painted lines. However there was no danger of them going off as a nuke is primed a lot differently and has many more steps to prime. They weren't priming only transporting so these weren't armed.

I have a real hard time believing that nuclear weapons are stored along side regular weapons. So this doesn't sound like a very good theory but then again I can't come up with anything better. I guess we'll have to wait for a botched internal investigation in to what happened, that's assuming our media doesn't forget about this, which they probably will.
