OFFICIAL Wii launch specs!

There's certainly no guarantee the wii won't flop. Despite being a huge Nintendo fan, i've been sceptical ever since the wii and its controller was announced. Not because it doesn't scream of promise, but because much depends on how good a start it gets and whether the 3rd party support comes (think what the best developers in the industry could do with the wiimote if they felt their time and money would be well spent).

Either way, i'm confident it'll be great value for money and provide much enjoyment overt the next few years. £180 is worth paying for a machine that'd only play Nintendo games, everything else is gravy.

Exactly how I feel. I still play my GC regularly with friends (SSBM is usually the game of choice :)) or just by myself in the various single player games out there MP1, MP2, Zelda, RE4, etc).

Like I said before, I'll be happy if we see about the same success. If I get my Mario sports titles, Mario Galaxy, MP3, Zelda:TP, and SSBB I can imagine myself playing the Wii for years to come. Then there's the possibility of cool 3rd party titles too :D

I am still entirely happy with my Gamecube. Only perhaps 2006 has been a slow year, like it has been for all consoles.

And the Wii pre-order has already sold out at Amazon.com. Less than 24 hours after the pre-order form was set free. No actual numbers, but that is pretty amazing.

I'd seen bits of the vid, but not all together.

I agree about Excite Truck - it's been looking better and better other the last few months. Not sure if it's for me, will wait on a few reviews.

That Wii advert makes me want it more and more :(.

Nintendo play will be my staple for a while I think. Lots of good games, as long as the AI is up to it.

Nothing new, but good quality:

These don't look as good, but show different routes:

I'm reassured both of the technical power behind the wii (not too shabby :) ) and that Mario Galaxies should kick ass :)

On a more of a depressing note - there's been a report (not confirmed) that the pal wii either won't support progressive scan or, more likely, that the machine will but the games won't (just as with the GC). If true this is a real bad move by Nintendo - why pay more for a console that looks considerably worse?

This isn't such a big deal if you plan on using rgb on an old tele - but if you have gone the HD route recently, or plan on getting a new tele in the next year or two, games will look like complete arse. Any other company and i'd disregard this info. offhand, but Nintendo seem to hate europe and have done this before.

I was leaning towards importing before and am now almost definately.

I've never imported anything before. How worth it is it to import all your games from the USA? I mean, isn't the machine also encoded so it'll default to showing you American weather reports instead of European ones?
I thought about importing before I saw it was region locked. But thinking about it, doesn't America get all their games before us anyway?

Even with paying postage you'll get the games cheaper. Most are released earlier in the states which means you'll get them earlier too (even incl. the week they take to arrive). The downside is with simultaneous releases, in which case you'll have to wait (unlike with the Xbox/360 this very rarely happens with Nintendo titles, though). Importing also rules out those guilty impulse buys :)

The biggest advantage is that we know most, if not all, games will support 480p via component.

How import machines work online is the big question. The 360 is fine regardless of which region you have. Personally I reckon it'd work, but we'd be downloading from US servers. It may also mean that we can't play games with other people from the uk. I'm not really bothered which weather station we get as a default.

If it was confirmed pal games would support progressive i'd get one without question. I'm less impatient than I used to be and can wait a few extra weeks for releases and don't mind spoending an extra fiver for the games, but would be absolutely gutted to turn on my Wii and find out 480p wasn't supported.

The sensible option is to wait and see - but we all want a shiney wii ready for Christmas :)

Some user impressions:

'This is the proof positive that the Wii is about more than just quirky mini games, the controls work absolutely superbly (unless as Alex said, you lose your targeting reticule - they need to make that sensor strip bigger than the TV to compensate methinks).

The aiming is spot on.

It DOES work as a "Couch" controller, you lardarses will be pleased to know - and subtle movements translate a lot better than wild arm-flailing (unless you're me and you nearly end up chinning *******idiots who walk in your way while you're playing baseball).

Of the games I played, Metroid was easily far and away the most impressive. Zelda was great fun (the sword play in it is utterly SUPERB, I kid you not, the sole reason to pick up the Wii version and not the cube version because the graphics are exactly the same as the cube version, ie ropey as ****).

Mario Planet is superb.

Wario Ware Smooth Moves - well obviously this rocks! It's what the console was made for.

Red Steel sucked, and in fact Ubi got really **** with me when I tried to take a photo of it after it had crashed later on. Har! It looks rough, and plays rough - in fact both Ubi games seem to have missed the concept of the controller completely).

Call of Duty 3. Ugly ugly ugly but the controller sorta works quite neatly for it. But this is very much NOT the sort of game that should be on the Wii (that goes for Red Steel too).

Excite Trucks was good fun, very fast, very smooth, very hard to control but after a few goes it got a lot better.

All of the Wii Sports titles were utterly excellent.

Game of the conference for me was Metroid by a long way, and I do absolutely agree with the prof that this ain't gonna be for everyone.

It's been a long day, I'm knackered. I will be doing a few bits for AATG tomorrow inc. photos - muchas thanks to Alex and Vicky for putting up with me, and cheers to Ollie and the Gamer.TV guys for (eventually) getting us in. And the Wii Watch rocks...'

Mario Planet? Either they've changed the name or this guy is an idiot. If they have changed it, I liked Galaxy better. If he's just an idiot, I hope he's wrong about Red Steel.

An easy enough mistake - no point reading too much into it.

I've read a few user impressions and most say Red Steel is poor. Time will tell, but I was put off by the first gameplay vids and think the latest ones look just as crappy. Fortunately Metroid seems to have the controls done well.

I just watched a Mario vid at IGN with commentary - it was excellent and has me hyped more than ever :)

Damn and I wanted Red Steel to be good too. I'm not really one who cares about graphics, so as long as the control is good (which there has been a lot of controversy about with it) then I'm happy.
If Excite Trucks is good then I might aswell get it. I want me a few driving games. But I'm not a fan of Wario-Ware so I won't pick up it's Wii sequel.

heh - I thought the same thing. Metroid did look great regardless of the guy demonstrating being a bit of a numpty - I especially like the way you pull and twist the lock mechanism to open the door.

I was also thinking that some, if not all, of the difficulties people are having with the wiimote could be attributed to the conditions they're playing in. In most cases they appear to be standing up at games show or demonstration, their arms unsupported, and quite close to a large flat screen. I imagine sitting down while resting your elbow on your leg would make play considerably more stable and easy to manage, even more so if you're the right distance from the screen.

GameTrailers has more videos up, including one of ExciteTruck, which, graphically, looks pretty damn good, especially the water.

I have to say, seeing the guy talk about Metroid was pretty funny. He was actually complaining about the console losing his controller when he pointed it at the ceiling to point out one of the buttons to the camera. Hell, he even complained about not being able to rip a shield off of a door with the Grapple Beam from two feet away. ****ing idiot.

I noticed the same. The guy kept saying, "Oh, it lost my aimer again" and it bugged me.

Excite Truck does look quite fun. It's not the kind of game I imagine myself playing online (so I don't miss it) but more of a game I play with friends berating each other for landing on our opponents' cars and messing them up with the dynamic land forming and whatnot.

Hmm...I was going to go return my wired router and pay $30+ more for a wireless one for my DS Lite and Wii but if it's only $15, I think I'll just get the adapter. I don't have any online games for my DS Lite just yet anyways.

I've got a wireless router I could dig up if I wanted to, it isn't in use. But I think I'm going to buy/use the USB to ethernet adapter instead.

Mature content on the Wii.
"We’re reaching out to every publisher, frankly every day. I’ll be spending some time later today with the folks over at Take Two to see what type of support they can give our console. … The fact is there will be M-rated content on the Wii console. EA has already announced that they’re bringing ‘The Godfather’ to our console. And we want every single best-selling game to be available on Wii. Whatever that content is."

The guy posting suggests a Leisure Suit Larry Wii game. lol

Maddox had a book signing in my town yesterday. A friend of mine went with me, and asked Maddox what next gen console he liked the most. He very adamently proclaimed that he liked the Wii the most.

There you have it. Maddox says to buy it, so we have to buy it.
