Lin Miaoke's performance Friday night, like the ceremony itself, was an immediate hit. "Nine-year-old Lin Miaoke becomes instant star with patriotic song," the China Daily newspaper headline said Tuesday.

But the real voice behind the tiny, pigtailed girl in the red dress who wowed 91,000 spectators at the National Stadium on opening night really belonged to 7-year-old Yang Peiyi. Her looks apparently failed the cuteness test with officials organizing the ceremony, but Chen said her voice was judged the most beautiful.
lolchinese

"The national interest requires that the girl should have good looks and a good grasp of the song and look good on screen," Chen said. "Lin Miaoke was the best in this. And Yang Peiyi's voice was the most outstanding."
lolwut?

Lol. I heard about this on the radio. Apparently she was "too ugly".

Never use the ugly word when speaking with girls.

I don't think it is that important. For the opening ceremony, as long as the overall impression was good, it doesn't matter how the scene was conjured up. It was not the child's personal performance time after all.

It's still wrong. How do you think that kid felt when she was told she was too ugly to perform, but her voice was to be used, with this other, cuter girl lip syncing to it?

It's typical communist bullshit; the needs of a few are sacrificed for the needs of many. Or in this case: the feelings and self esteem of one are sacrificed for the image of the country.

A little bit of empathy here please gents. How disapointed would you be if you were that little girl?

Or does this certain culture have a different outlook than western cultural views? Ie: working for the gain of all, for the common and greater good?

Saw this on the daily show... Jon made quite a funny bit out of it.

Oh, shit, the Daily Show should be briiliant atm with the current world situation. I should go start watching again.

Haha wut, I don't think it has anything to do with communism. I think they were just dicks. EDIT: Wait wait I lied, yesterday on NPR they said that brain organization and consequently the steps your brain takes in decision-making are different based on your culture. So it is prossible!

The article says the real singer is easygoing and doesn't like to show off, so I don't think this was too devastating for her. The issue was that her teeth were crooked, not that she was just really ****ing hideous. I dunno, I dunno. It's hard to say.

I guess I really don't care all that much because one of them has actual talent and will probably go pretty far in life, while the other is stuck working tables (or corners lols) once she's not the cute little paedo-magnet anymore.

I'm not exactly blaming it on communism, I'm just saying it has the aura of communism attached to it. I personally like to think that this sort of thing wouldn't happen in the United States or Canada (not limited to). People would be outraged.

Anyway, I knew someone was going to say (as true as it may be) that the actual singer could have been delighted with the fact that she would not be put in the spotlight. Regardless, deep down she knows why she wasn't picked to be put on as a showcase for the World to see, but only to hear.

It's funny that I'm condemning this act despite the fact that I really wasn't all that flustered when I first heard this news. It didn't surprise me all that much.

Typical mistake. It is only a problem interpretation, where people holding bias tend to a pessimistic point of view. Think it on this way. Lin Miaoke is very cute, so she would be standing on the stage. Yang Peiyi has a wonderful voice, so she will be singing for the ceremony. The two girls were showing their best respectively on the ceremony. No one lost.

It is not always like "she is ugly so she won't be on the stage whilst the other she sucks at singing so we won't use her voice." A very bad way of thinking.

But the problem is most people are being led to believe it is actually the girl in the red dress singing.

Did they roll credits at the end of the Opening Ceremonies to make note of who actually was singing the song? I'm quite sure they didn't.

That is where the problem lays. Don't blame it on the arrangement for whom is being put on the stage.

Except the singer lost, because she didn't any limelight at all for her talent and in return, has now been ridiculed beyond belieft at being told she couldn't step up to show her talent because of the way she looks.

Stop thinking of win and lose in terms of the events rules and think about the principles of the entire thing. It's ridiculous.

Prettiness is a talent.

Yes, they should give her the credit immediately after the ceremony. But that doesn't make the organiser having to hide the cute girl.

No, the problem is only created because of the arrangement. Without the arrangement there is no problem, therefore no solution needs to be devised (giving credit where credit is due).

At this point in our argument it's becoming more philosophical than anything, so regardless of whether you agree now, I'm finished making my point.

It's a case of China wanting to appear perfect to the world.

So what are you proposing, if you have to choose between the two girls?

Between who should of been up there doing her job to get the credit for all her hard work? The singer, not the poser.

Putting her name in the credits is nothing compared to what she should have had.

there is nothing wrong with the way the real singer looks. This is absolutely ridiculous beyond belief.

If she has bad teeth, then don't zoom in with the camera 500% on her mouth. But they really aren't bad at all. Nothing to be ashamed of. They are baby teeth.

The other thing is, China seems to be full of deceit and trickery. Is this what they wanted to show the world? Ancient Chinese secret?

LOL Fail @ age 7....

But ya, this shouldnt be the case but oh well i kind of see where they are coming from. They should give credit to the fugly one tho.

Photographers from other news networks are willing to do so.

if this where for comunisn they would have put the real singer for the fact that talent matters more and comunist allways show talent any time they can as image of how the comunisn is great and such, just look at how cuba dedicates so much to sports

so I think china care more for a pretty image

That's true. Still though, with such a beautiful voice. I mean both kids are cute.

I think it's just wrong and most likely damaging to the real singer not to mention the image of China. Completely the opposite of their intention.

There is a long tradition of "singing behind the curtain" in China, actually. Anyway, it is just that we hold different opinions.
