Do I make a sport out of it, jump on a fad, and call it 'parkour'? Nah....

I'm sorry, fad?

Okay, it's one thing to poke fun at traceurs, people do it all the time, it's another to call their lifestyle a fad and trample on their passion.

I'm sorry, I don't think you understand parkour the least bit. Parkour isn't jumping over fences, it isn't climbing trees, it's about destroying the boundaries created by society. Being so efficient at "jumping fences" that it seems as effortless as walking.

Usually, when people climb fences, when people get across walls, it recquires effort. A single obstacle will break their flow. Traceurs no longer restrict themselves to the same dimension. The goal is to move from point A to B as if you were on a perfectly smooth plane, to take the path that's never been taken because of artificial restrictions

Wikipedia said:
According to founder David Belle, the "spirit" of parkour is guided in part by the notions of "escape" and "reach";[2] that is, the idea of using physical agility and quick thinking to get out of difficult situations, and to be able to go anywhere that one desires.[3] However, fluidity and beauty are also important considerations; for example, Sébastien Foucan speaks of being "fluid like water,"[4] a frequently used metaphor for the smooth passage of barriers through the use of parkour. Similarly, experienced traceur Jerome Ben Aoues explains in the documentary Jump London that:

The most important thing really is the harmony between you and the obstacle; the movement has to be elegant ….If you manage to pass over the fence elegantly - that's beautiful, rather than saying ‘I jumped the lot.’ What's the point in that?

Whatever happened to having fun?
Theres nothing wrong with just getting a sugar high and jumping around, or even using it to work out and do cool stunts. But, like most sports and activities, taking it too seriously just defeats the purpose.

I was about ready to jump on him about that but I did not know the words on how to do it. So to Crushenator 500, What Thesomeone said. Just don't go up to someone who enjoys somthing and start making fun of it before you have even done it

No it doesn't... That's not true at all. I hope you realized you probalby just pissed off 75% of the US, knowing how seriously we take our sports. It's not the same kind of fun, but if you think, for example, that winning a basketball championship after months of training isn't fun, you're seriously mistaken. It's more than fun, it gives you a feeling you could get in no other way.

I will be able to feel things you will never be able to feel by being experienced at parkour, and that includes pleasure. Pleasure at the freedom that traceurs alone can feel. You think you can do full stunts by getting sugar high and bouncing all over the place? Please.

Obviously if it wasn't fun I wouldn't be taking Parkour seriously on my spare time. Ever think about that one?

I think you guys are missing the whole point of Parkour it is not just about jumping around and climbing stuff.

Exactly. That's like saying soccer is about kicking a ball back and forth across a field. And Half-Life 2 is about shooting stuff.

To all you guys that are making fun of Parkour, Just go out there and try it. I bet that you will have the best time of your life. Every day I do this stuff and it always gets funner and funner. And if you are to chicken to go out there and try this then don't sit there and make fun of it!

yeah seriously, some stuff you just gotta try to get. like playing an insturment or listening to music (yeah it plays noise into your ear, whoop deedoo), and shit. just try it or don't knock it ;D

P.S. my arms hurt really bad, i've done 100 pushups in the past 2 days and thats more then ive done the past 2 years combined i think x_x

Thus my point. You have fun at it. What else is needed?

This is what I'm talking about: taking stuff way too seriously and getting offended. Go and have fun. I just take issue with the idea of trying to surround something that should be enjoyable with layers of often-pretentious philosophy (this occurs in many sports, particularly those like snowboarding and skateboarding that get labeled "extreme"). Keep it simple, and don't start getting concerned over what other people think of you, because when you're doing it more for the attention than the enjoyment is when bad stuff happens.

And proffessional sports are taken extremely seriously, and this leads to everything from cheating and steroid abuse, to people having riots over the outcomes of games.

I was not trying to insult people so if anyone was insulted by my remarks sorry, I was just trying to get a point acrost and did not know any other way to do it

Good job, Keep that up and come spring time you will look like David Belle going through your town! Keep up the good work :)

lol, man i have a looong way to go. I almost died after the first 15, and i mean i almost literally collapsed. but im sort of tired of being the kid everyone turns to when they need to take out frustration, and that video kind of got me moving. So if i see david i'll have to thank him (though he wont understand me as i only speak english and spanish at a kindergarten level, heh)

Yes, I have fun taking it seriously, so why not get off my case by saying "whatever happened to just having fun." Nothing happened to it, we just have different perceptions of it.

>_<
This is just getting foolish now.
Plain and simple: That statement was not directed specifically at you, nor was it meant as a diss at Parkour in general, or as a reply to your previous comments. My post was an agreement with several of the posts that had been made over the previous page. (The gist of which, ironically, was that people need to stop being so touchy and image-conscious when it comes to physical activity)

Parkour isn't a sport, it's a philosophy. David Belle created it in mind for it to be a philosophy.

No one is going "ooh it's soo deeep man" like some may do with skateboarding because skateboarding was originally created as a sport. Parkour has no competing element.

Stop ridiculing other people's interests, you're just going to get people pissed off.

You really don't understand with this "taking serious" thing. Parkour is not just "something you go out and do", it's a way of life for a whole lot of people.

If you think we're being obsessive, well take a look at yourself and whatever you're interested in, be it computers, TV/movies or whatever.
Plus, it's all in good fun.

Few people I've met are as chilled and funny to be with as traceurs.

Its probably my fault, but I give up on trying to agree with anyone in this thread. Everytime I try to do it, someone takes it the wrong way. Nothing I've said was meant in a critical, demeaning, mean-spirited, or malicious way. I'm not sure if its my fault or what, but no matter how inoffensive and lighthearted I try to be, someone takes it as an insult.

All of my statements to this point have been agreements, not criticisms.

Oh no ;( ;( ;(

Yamakasi is the name of a French parkour clan and the title of a movie about Parkour, but please please please, never call it Yamakasi again. And it originated in Paris. (And yes, it's Yamakasi not Yamikasi)

My main tip is to constantly practice balance: Walking on rails, handstands. Get to know your body, be aware of the way you move at all times.
Lol I do that all the time :D

I'd pwn at it if I had the terrain for it D: (I live in a village, so all we got are high roofs or shabby low houses that will make loads of noise.)

If I lived in France, I'd do it all the time :p

OMG I took busting your but to a whole new level. I sliped off a rail and landed on the sidewalk.
kerpwned.

I have a worse one. I was skateboarding today, I just smith grinded my entire rail, then I rolled onto a patch of ice. Slipped out, the board jumped up and caught me in the neck, I fell, ended up with all my weight on my neck... on the board's edge. Now I am in pain.

^ Ouch. Skateboarding is more dangerous than Parkour.

I went and PKed for about an hour and a half today, practice a lot of wallruns and heaving myself up walls and balancing.

Man... I wish I lived in a better town, a few hundred druggies would swarm me if I ever attempted Parkour in public. I'd still find a moment to try to Tic-Tac, always wanted to walk on walls ;P

Saw Blackghost's post in Short Recoil's thread, and have occasionally tried the landing and landing roll. I'll try doing that Air Attack or whatever it's called to get better at jumping, start exercising overall, and practice parkour sometimes. Though from what I've seen, parkour seems more for urban stuff, like what you would find in a town or city. I live on a 74 acre ranch, so there's certainly stuff I can find, including nice trees, barns/sheds, many... many fences (which is good), and there's always my house (though my mom would kill me. On the other hand, what's she going to do if I'm on the roof?). I don't go into town much at all, but I will more often so i can practice a bit, possibly.

I think I'll go watch David Belle's video.

i'm leaving for a week holiday next week and i know the place where me and my friends are going has some great places to do some runs, woot.
