Unfortunately the new patch comes with a pretty significant performance penalty. Using Anand's at_c17_12.dem benchmark (available below) I've measured it at 25%.

http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/video/HalfLife2/AT_hl2_demos.zip

I tested at 1024 x 768 with 4x antialiasing and 8x anisotropic filtering. v_sync and sound were both off. I ran the timedemo 3 times and then took the average.

With mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware set to "0"

50.19, 48.98, 50.17
average: 49.96

With mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware set to "1"

34.60, 40.98, 38.82
average 38.13

Valve's "fix" seems pretty expensive! Are we all getting similar results?

With lots of water on the screen the penalty is even greater. On at_canals_08.dem I get 58.39 vs 39.6 (32%).

So if I have the 'mat_forcetextureintohardware' line in console then I've got the patch?

Erm ............. Made F**k all difference to my game. I think the framerate has dropped but the stutter is still there. gutted :-( Will I ever be able to play HL2?? Me thinks not.

The patch hasn't really helped me at all Im still getting the sound stuttering.Ive a minimum spec machine.
Could someone mail me the original halflife 2 config file so I can try that out as I lost it and have been messing around with my settings.
Heres my address.

Or if I tried that would it overwrite the patch?
I don't know.
Mite just send it back and get a refund.

Same here. Clearly this problem is just going to run & run for many of us. I've actually already had one refund from Amazon. I told them to cancel the refind when I heard Valve had acknowledged the problem & were working on a patch. Some patch. Fixes nothing!!

You guys... there IS no patch. Read what the news update says. I'll summarize for you: Sound stuttering is a symptom of texture thrashing which can be fixed by going to the link they provided in the news page to their support site. You may have RECIEVED an update, but it was more than likely for steam.
Yes, this sucks. No real update. But this shows everyone getting all worked up for nothing!! Everyone's posting they have better or worse framerates!! Guess what!!! It's not due to any patch!!!

You should remember that if you have nvidia hardware sets "mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware" to 0 just because it makes the stuttering thing worse.

They are working on a nvidia solution, be patient.
