PC Gamer (US) review of Quake 4 in a word: OUCH!!!

I don't think PC Gamer US means too much, PC Gamer UK is where it's at :farmer:

Yep, Americans suck.

Can always count on HL2.net for your daily America Hate.

Yeah, or perhaps it's because PCGUK is widely regarded as the better magazine. You don't have to feel so insecure about your precious country.

Maybe you people should wait for a couple more reviews before finalizing your decisions. Just because PC Gamer doesn't like it doesn't mean that it's, OMG t3h sux c0ck!

It probably doesn't mean it's the masterpiece that quake I, II and III were, which is what most of us were expecting at the least.

Except the critics actually liked Doom 3 :p
That was before Half-Life 2 showed them the light. Quake 4, probably developed before the release of HL2, never had time to innovate for what have clearly become higher standards.

Here's to Quake Wars.

To all the PCGUK folks, oh, who played it first? My bad. If their opinions are any different, then YOU will be the final judge (with your money). Would you rather believe someone saying it's good or someone saying it's bad.

Yeah, but what does that have to do with quake 4?

Like I said, I was confused... to which one was the one everybody was anticipating.

Quake Wars (if that's what you're asking about) is from the creators of Wolf: ET. It's using the Doom 3 engine to create a tactical multiplayer game based in the Quake universe (humans vs. strogg).
You can look up some pics and vids, I think they're aiming for the "BF2 in Quake" motif.

This is quite stunning imo. Never expected it to be that bad.

I'll be the guy that bites the bullet and buys it.

Ill let everyone know how it is.

I knew this would happen to Quake 4. It seemed to come out to early and the videos and screenshots for sp looked like crap. Im still getting it for mp tho.

Never was really "wow'ed" by this game, Quake Wars on the other hand looks very cool.

I thought Quake Wars was part of Quake IV... I am confused...

Quake Wars is a multiplayer-only Battlefield-style game that acts as a prequel to Quake 2 as it deals primarily with the Strogg invasion of Earth.

By who? Europeans? I've picked up my fair share of PC Gamer UK's, they're considerably thicker than ours. But I think the writing and jokes are shit.

What? I'm an american and I weep because the PCG jokes are so terrible. The last time I read PCGUK I laughed so hard I was crying (indigo prophecy preview).

Why are PC game scores always high even when it's a bad game?

Lol you've obviously never seen the likes of 5-10% rated games, there's a diff. between "not amazing" and "utter shit"

besides a PC shooter like this, 70%, if it was console only w/o quake name under some other angel hat moniker, it would at least be boosted 20 more, because the PC = FPS haven of goodness, so there are higher standards.

Don't think I'll purchase this unless it drops to $20 or less around christmas time. In the meantime BF2 is still my #1 :D

Same saved myself the 50 thanks to pc gamer, thats a huge shame I was REALLY looking forward to this. oh well

*preorders FEAR

Doom 3: No gameplay changes since the first Doom except for the graphics.
Quake 4: No gameplay changes since Quake 2 (singleplayer) and Quake 3. (multiplayer)

When Doom 3 came out, the only reason I got it right away was because it came with Knights of the Old Republic for free. If a store has a similar deal for Quake 4, i'll get it. Otherwise, i'll wait until it's $30.

Like previously stated, it's all opinion.

not true... it moved slower and was so dark you couldn;t see shit

Meh, quake 4 never got me happy in the pants, I'm just glad they didn't give it a good score because it's quake.

I was never interested in the singleplayer. I will try the demo to check out the MP though.
Good ole' Quake 3 Arena deathmatch! :D

?????
The gameplay was MASSIVELY CHANGED from Doom 1. I mean MASSIVE. No longer is it a run and gun tons of guys around you shooter. Doom 3 is a spooky shooter. There is a fine line between there gameplay types.

**** I remember in Doom 1 or Doom 2 there were tons and i mean like 100's of guys around me shooting every witch way. Then I couldn't win so I nocliped to this point on the map and seen Carmacks face. What a site to behold.

I bet you got it from Future Shop, didn't you?

I'm sure this is going to down Raven's reputation a bit. However, people forget one major thing I think, it was executive produced by Id. Even if Raven said "Hey, we want more time to work on this", Id probably replied "No, it's good enough." Maybe I'm wrong, but hasn't it been a little over a year since Raven said "We're not releasing any media because it really isn't in a playable state yet."? A year isn't that much in game developer time, especially if you want a good game. This might be sufficient for, let's say, debugging (realistically that shouldn't take longer than six months, but still).

Also, engine constrictions. Quake 4 faced the same problems as D3 did as it was developed alongside D3 as well. Meh, they would have been better off if they waited for that new engine Carmack was developing (I thought he was developing one), or the Source engine, like that would ever happen. Raven would have done some amazing things with that though.
