I see a lot of threads deleted on that forum more than any other forum. Maybe it's the subject matter, or the reactions of somebody over a topic that is sensitive. This post is just to see if the moderaters see a problem with the politics forum. That forum usually contains material that is sensitive to a lot of people and tempers flare on that forum, in which it leads to flaming and all sorts of other things. My question to the moderators is: If it gets way out of hand, will it shut down? Have you ever had to do that on this site before? Just a general question. I think it's an interesting topic to discuss. Thank you.

I'm not going to comment on what I personally think of the forum, but I will say that if things get way out of control, you will see banned users more often than closed forums.

I see...but have you had to close a forum because of it before? Just curious. Thanks.

Not really. AFAIK, no forum has ever been closed just because it was out of control, but theres no reason that precident would rule

It's a ridiculous forum section that has no place on a gaming website.

I'd be happy to see it gone, but then the political threads would start popping up everywhere (as they are starting to do now). I blame Sprafa.

I would have no issue with a forum wide ban on "completely political" threads, eg stuff about iraq, bush, congress, north korea etc etc- just allow "general spectrum politics" in off topic, which would include stuff like ONE thread on hurricane katrina, maybe if theres a federal election, a couple of threads would be ok. That would be it.

It would be easy to stop a politics flood into off topic. I'd just lock them all, save for a few that in my opinion are general enough in nature or that I think arent too bad.

EG, everything currently displaying in politics would be locked, except for perhaps one on katrina, and maybe that pope one.. In the end it should be moderator disgression, and if people need more, then they can go to politicsforum.com or whatever it is.

I vote to change the name "politics forum" to "Spam and flame forum"

I hate that forum; I doubt there are many who think it does more good than bad.

I'd personally call it something else, but I doubt the management would approve of me saying what that is. :p

It's the biggest mistake in the history of the site. Yes, even bigger than Munro :O

It's good when the discussions are 100% about politics, but bad when a thread about GTA Hot Coffee or something similar gets moved there...

I avoid the politics forum. I don't think I've made more than 5 posts in there.

Close it, god damn.

Why prolong a problem? What's the logic in that?

Conflict = everyone having something to say
everyone having something to say = popular
Popularity = traffic
traffic = clicks
clicks = ...

That's not the reason at all.

My reasoning behind it is if we close the Politics forum then the crap there would filter off into Off Topic which is a bad idea. At least the Politics forum is sort of like a quarrentine for all the shit.

That's the same justification for a spam & flames forum - something which we swore we'd never have.

Well, we could close it and see what happens.

Stern and No-Limit would probably go crazy.

(No offence ;))

It's just like real politics, occasionally entertaining, but mostly annoying and pointless. Do you want CptStern (Sorry to single you out, but you're the only regular I know) and all those guys spilling that crap on the rest of the site though?

If everyone hates it, why is there so many posts in there? Surely it'd be esaier to close it and ban anyone who posted about politucs elsewhere?

I still remember the big debates about creating it. This is a site about discussions and debates. Off-topic was created for all things unrelated to Half-Life 2 debates. Generally that means that politics is a perfectly acceptable form of debate to be put into off-topic. However when it becomes as popular and large as it did then it basically needed its own seperate section. Thats also why the General Games chat was put in.

The only thing wrong with the politics section is when there is only flaming and no debate. However there is actually a very large amount of debate. From my perspective the flaming is really more like a little sprinkle of stuff on top of the debate donut. What everyone sees first is the flaming, but if you look further you see that there is actually far more debate than flaming.

Take it out and it will spill over into off-topic, that really isn't very fair at all. Ban all politics debates and its kind of defeating the purpose of having a forum that has an off-topic section.

Its not the same as banning a flame forum because there is no debate or arguments in there, its just a flame war which is exactly the opposite of what most forums are meant for.

Exactly

Hmmm, donuts

On-topic : Yes, the politics section must and shall stay. Or the world will perish. :O

The politics forum is a hellish place which must be destroyed at all costs, its formidable and sizable presence attracts more and more hellions, each bent on spreading their liberal and conservative lies and propaganda. If it shall cease to exist, I shall be most delighted in knowing that the wasteland of topics that plague our forums will forever be deleted, not like the opinions of those who post there shall ever matter beyond the scope of this forum as goes the way of almost all the exists in the beloved porn-inhabited Internets.

pfftt ..it's funny that the people who are most vocal about closing the politics section rarely ever post in it.

get past the flaming sprinkles (heh ;) mullinator) and it's one the most interesting sections of hl2.net ..what other section touches on the enviroment, abortion, democracy, individual freedoms, ethics, art, literature, ideology and morality

sure debates get heated and some descend into flame wars but it's just the nature of the beast ..all of these topics stir up emotions because these are issues that are at the very core of what and who we are

ban ideological discussion and we're just another game fan site

I think the concept is okay, and indeed some of the people are so stupid that is it amusing to watch, but some people in there need to STFU.

No Limits: Truely shows no limits in his preaching, its would be funny except hes so dedicated in hatred to anything that starts with r and ends with ight. The scientists say that Liberals are impulsive and conservatives are analytical, and from what I have gathered on the subject, they are correct.

I think its funny that half the posts for many people come from the politic section. Also that some people on this board come only for that section.

People don't post in there much because they don't feel like having to defend their opinions because some asshole thinks he/she is wrong/stupid.

Alot of us just dont bother, we are not going to change their views nomatter how misguided they are. I dont post there much just out of apathy, but sometimes, I feel the need to make people look stupid, but whatever, I don't even post on this board that much anyways.

and so they should

I agree ..they're usually the trouble makers

who loses out more?: the person who thinks someone's opinion is stupid or the person who remains silent for fear of being judged?

I heart the Politics forum.

And I have a box of mild sedatives on my desk next to my monitor for those times when I'm overcome with rage at how stupid some of the people there are. :)

Sedatives? Good idea, when reading some comments I wonder how the hell this planet is going to sustain some of these people. I don't care what political affiliation, every side has massive amounts of retards.

So we don't need to get rid of the forum itself, just the retards that populate it.

Expand that solution by a few orders of magnitude and you have the answer to all the world's problems. Retard genocide! :D
